After a 'night on the town* the squad sallied forth for
1 ondon and the British Lions versus Barbarians match. The
following day, a short trip to Sunbury-on-Thames
for the game
l
against London Irish Second XV where mine host * is Jack
Thompson, ex-RSM of the Corps. This turned out to be a
very fast game and the final score was twenty nine points to
sixteen against Bracht. No excuses. The hosts were a young,
fit team, and Bracht performed creditably.

4 Petroleum Depot
RECENT activities have been rather overshadowed by our fire
and disaster exercise called Exercise Brandmeister. This exercise
was designed by the Officer Commanding to test the reaction
ot all the military and civilian staff of the Depot, our own fire
brigade and the local civilian services that would be required
during a major disaster. Watched by the DOS (BAOR), some
twenty fire tenders and fifty Red Cross personnel all arrived at
the Depot and swiftly countered the various problems. Smoke
and explosions were controlled by the Ammunition Inspectorate.
All very realistic,
As a reward for all the hard work done during the exercise
a Unit social evening was held in the Depot by the civilian
and military staffs. During the evening the civilians had a
surprise in store for Captain Roy Southworth who is due to
oapart shortly to enjoy the rigours of a commando course. One
of Roy's many tasks is that of fire officer and with a roll of
drums, on to the floor stepped eight young girls dressed out in
firemen*s uniform. They were a group of dancers from one
of
the villages around the Depot and they had devised the
v
Firemans Hop * in his honour.
Our hard worked detachment at Nienburg have had a rest
during the past few weeks and full use of this was made to do
some much needed Depot maintenance.
Sergeant Skinner
travelled to Dulmen to complete his continuation training and
Corporal Willis managed a swift familiarisation course on the
Eager Beaver. Congratulations are in order to the detachment
for apprehending a civilian who thought a couple of jerricans
wouldn't be missed.
Warendorf is still undergoing changes with the new arrival
of Corporal Whitelaw from Ordnance Depot Northern Ireland,
He has managed to set a record by being the first ever in the
Depots history to get an accompanied passage,
The Depot is due to have a weekend exercise shortly under
the name of Exercise Zigeuner and looking at the administration
order gypsies is what well be!
Ordnance Depot Antwerp
THE Unit completed a very successful summer training camp
at Lombardzijde at the Belgian Coast. Range firing, sport and
the assault course was a pleasant way of passing the time for
those with energy to spare, the new Battle Efficiency Tests were
thrown in for good measure. The training sessions concluded
with a most enjoyable and worthwhile March and Shoot com-
petition. RSM Gunner and his training staff, ably supported
by Sergeant Jim Prescott ACC and his helpers in the anti-
''ilnutrition stakes, are to be congratulated on their successes.
The football season got under way with a heartening 4-2
away victory over 23 Regiment RCT, followed by a 7-1 drub-
bing of the nearby American base at Oevel, two days later.
The team this year seems to be a reasonable balance of ex-
perience,—in the persons of W02 Viv Green, Staff Sergeant Tony
Spence, Sergeant Jim McNee,—and youthful exuberance personi-
fied by Lance Corporal Daye Webster, Private 'Geordie'
Purkins and two recent arrivals from * the factory/ Privates
' Muffet' Worley and Lee Steer. There are others of course,
of whom we will say more later,
The golfers report that the remaining eight teams in the
BAOR Inter Unit Golf Championship assembled at Hohne
Golf Club to play the final stages of the championship on 15th
and 16th September
With our best player, Captain Peter
Fellows, absent from the team, we were defeated in the quarter-
finals by the eventual winners, 1 Royal Signals.
We had the consolation of soundly defeating both 22 and 16
Signal Regiments to win the Plate Competition. We have said
farewell to Captain Brian Jenkins and can only hope he has the
opportunity to improve his golf further in Northern Ireland.
Butchers who have served previously in Antwerp may be
interested to hear that ' Johnstalco' who were the handling
agents at the Cold Store are now part of ' Refribel' the Belgian
State owned Refrigerating Company. ' Johnstalco * have been
associated with the British Army for twenty two years, how-
ever, we still have the same familiar faces on the quayside.
The British Forces Association Wives Club recently held
their Annual Barbecue at the Unit swimming pool. This was
attended by ninety wives and some ten brave husbands who
volunteered (?) to help with the cooking and the supply of
drinks. A few of the more hardy wives actually braved the icy
waters of the pool! With a disco in full swing the male con-
tingent were dragged (some went willingly) to the centre of the
dance floor. With all the wives surrounding them the Belgian
1
Kissing' Dance was under way. They'll never have such luck
again! The accompanying photograph shows some of the happy
party.
The Cooks and Committee before the start of the Barbecue.
The 4 Ins and Outs * department reports the arrival of
Sergeant Dave Francis, Corporal Ray Seabrook, Sergeant Geoff
Jones and Sergeant Dave Hogg; the departure of Private
Geordie Bell, Lance Corporal Harry Randall and Corporal
Trevor Neath. We congratulate Corporal Roy Finer on pass-
ing his RPC 1 course, Lance Corporal Dave Greenwood on
passing his PRPC 2 Course and Lance Corporal Dave Webster
on passing Bl Petroleum Operators Course. Also Corporal 'Ginge*
and Mrs Christine Crompton on the safe arrival of Craig on
6th September at RAF Hospital Wegberg.
Wulfen Station
SEPTEMBER claimed the arrival of our
new Station Chief Clerk from the hills of
Wales, monsieur le Warrant Officer
Jacques Desfontaines, and we said cheerio
to Tony Carton who left us for Dortmund
to be the new Garrison Chief Clerk. We
congratulate him on his promotion and
The sport scene saw the visit of the
RAOC cricket team who, during their
successful tour of BAOR, had the oppor-
tunity to play Colonel Bolting's eleven. I am told to keep the
result a secret!
