THE RAOC GAZETTE ADVERTISEMENTS
1 (BR) CORPS TROOPS ORDNANCE FIELD PARK
WHERE is everybody? J ask myself. Most of the Unit are-
away on leave or helping the Royal Regiment train for Operation
Banner, Private Edgar decided to change his marital status
from single to married and Lance Corporal Yale decided to
burrow in potholes. Whereas Edgar had drink, and made merry,
Lance Corporal Yale found a Palaeolithic Beer Mug with no
beer and the remains of an 850 BC Cannibal Feast. Privates
Knight and Smith 942 helped the CVC move vehicles and
others went to the Volkslauf. Despite all this, some way or
another, we still managed to prepare for a Technical Visit in
September.
The football season is upon us again—it hardly seems to
have ended. The first match we played against the Richmond
Associates was won 9-4 with Lance Corporal Wells scoring
five of our goals. The Volkslauf team of Staff Sergeant Nim-
mons and son, Corporals Anson and Osborne have had more
success.
They won the Eighth International Volkslauf at
Astenberg in a time of 57.54 minutes. Sergeant Swift, who
has been disappearing occasionally throughout the summer to
play tennis, eventually became the REME BAOR Singles Tennis
Champion.
Sadly we end the month by bidding farewell to Herr Franz
Mendrys, the Mechanised Transport Clerk, who retires after
thirteen and a half years of continuous service to the Unit. He
was presented with an engraved carriage clock by the Officer
Commanding, Major Cowell, in the Unit Club and everyone
wished him well by sinking a pint or two. -
Promotions: Congratulations to the following on their pro-
motion : Sergeant Corless, Corporals Brown and Anson.
Arrivals: Private Joyce from Bicester.
Departures: Sergeant Jones, Lance Corporal Carpenter and
Corporal Brown.
Congratulations to Private Edgar on his recent marriage.

IT is sad to have to open THE GAZETTE notes by relating the
death of Mr Shaw. He worked for many years in 3 CDP
and was always a very popular member of the staff. He will
be missed by all those who knew him* Our thoughts are now
with his wife and family.
Our Summer Camp, Exercise Alpine Chic in Fussen, got
off to a good start aided, abetted and, so I am told, led by
Captain Walcroft. Despite several falls from his moped, which
only goes to show that he can't do wheelies on his front
wheel, he still managed to be on parade at 0600 hours for
Physical Training every morning. It has not yet been decided
who devised the most tortuous exercises, but Sergeant Graham
Muggleton is a clear favourite.
Regimental training was held in the mornings, co-ordinated
by W02 Chic Hulston who appeared to thrive only in a damp
environment, He too had his moments, specifically in the gas
chamber. After forty minutes of carrying out eating, drinking,
cannister and suit changing drills, we had very little breath left
to introduce ourselves to him by number, rank and name with-
out our respirators. Also included in this bumper package
of fun was map reading, shooting, and first aid. Unfortunately
no one had to dig trenches.
The afternoons were spent in the company of Second Lieu-
tenant Robin McDowall, who subjected all and sundry to
rambles in the mountains, uttering such phrases as "isn't this
just great" and " there's a lovely view from the top," whilst
pointing at something akin to Everest. He also proved that he
could sleep for longer than anyone else in the Unit. Despite
all of this everyone had a very good time, except when they
were subjected to only one line of a popular C and W song from
the Sergeants Mess choir.
Exercise congratulations to Private David * Biggies' Byrne
and Corporal John Dodds who located a path in a wood by
walking around it for three hours—they are to be presented
with a silver compass and a route card to Zeebrugge in Russian,
Congratulations also to Staff Sergeant Bob Wilson for his
numerous golfing achievements.
Goodbye to Private Eddie Brown (civilian) and Corporal
Jimmy McNeil. Welcome Second Lieutenant Robin McDowall
(belated), Corporal Potts, Private Bob Grey, Corporal Dusty
Miller and Private Sparky Hastings.
