LIEUTENANT COLONEL C. E. G. HELLfS writes: —
I was recently shocked to hear of the untimely death of
Staff Sergeant Toner while serving at Bicester. Staff Sergeant
Toner was one of that invaluable breed of senior ranks who are
able to turn their hands to any task, either in their trade, the
field of sport or in helping the under privileged. A man with
a ready smile who accepted and thrived on responsibility; his
early promotion to Staff Sergeant indicated his success in the
Corps. Staff Sergeant Toner will be sadly missed by his friends
and those he served under and our sympathy and sense of loss
extend to his wife Rita and the children. The Corps has lost a
fine senior rank whose work in many fields reflected credit on
his profession.
(Reported
in the November
Gazette.)
MRS RITA M. TONER would like to thank all members of
the Corps who sent messages and floral tributes following the
tragic death of her husband. -She would also like to thank in
particular, the members of MHTU Bicester, her husband's last unit.
BRIGADIER R. J. VOLKERS, CBE

STAFF SERGEANT JOSEPH GERARD TONER
MAJOR D. G. SMITH writes: —
It is with deep regret that we report the death of Staff
^rgeant Joseph Toner at RAF Hospital Hal ton on Friday
;4th October 1977, after a long illness.
Staff Sergeant Toner had a wide circle of friends in the
Corps and had been deeply involved in unit activities wherever
he served. In these he was supported by his wife, Rita. After
joining the Corps in February 1962, Joseph Toner qualified as
a Storeman and saw service in Aden, BAOR and UK. He joined
Materials Handling Trials Unit in September 1976 from 1 (BR)
Corps Combat Supplies Battalion and was employed as our
Senior Materials Handling Equipment Instructor until falling ill
in March 1977.
At only thirty four years of age, his death is doubly tragic
;tad he leaves a widow and four children; the youngest only
eighteen months old.
The burial took place at Bedford Cemetery, Forest Hill
