Transcription A MEMORABLE YEAR FOR RAOC GOLF
AS the tournament golfing season draws to a close RAOC
golfers can look back on an achievement that has yet to be
equalled by other sports representatives in Army circles. Every
Army open trophy of individual or Corps merit is now held by
the Cnrps and I extend my warmest congratulations to all the
playing members who have helped us attain such golfing fame.
We should* therefore, chronicle the year's events*
This month's GAZETTE ' cover-boy * must receive first
mention because he is the Army Golf Association Challenge
Cup holder for the second year running and is the Army's top-
most stroke-play golfer. Lance Corporal Ian Gray will enter
the next golfing season with our close support, hoping for a
hat-trick and retention of the trophy for all time,
Major Ron Rush is the Army match play champion, a dis-
tinction he won at the Army Golfing Society's Spring Meeting at
Sandwich. This is the first time the Corps has held the Army
Golf Championship Challenge Cup and although the event was
covered in the July issue of THE GAZETTE, here he is again just
for posterity,
The Corps plays eight Inter-Corps matches during each
golfing year, three of which are Trophy Matches. The Match
results (match captains are the first-named in each team) were:
Lance Corporal Ian Cray the ACA Stroke Play Champion.
The Inter Corps Championship was won at Tidworth in
June by our representative team, shewn here with the Royal
Irish Rangers Trophy. From left to right is Major Ron Rush
(Corps Secretary), Sergeant Paul Ladley, Lance Corporal Ian
Gray and Major Bob Dickenson (Corps Captain).
ROYAL ARTILLERY (Camberley Heath, 26th April)—Trophy:
Piece of Ordnance. Team: Dickenson, Rush, Lucas, Swindley,
Priestley, Cheesemore, Allen, Young. Result: RAOC won eight

ROYAL ARMY PAY CORPS (Blackmoor, 31st May)—Team:

This match was notable for the performance of the Corps
Captain who played a former Army Champion (Major Richard
Drake RAPC) and won his match by six and five,
ROYAL ENGINEERS (Effingham, 8th June^-TVam: Logan,
Swindley, Lang, Atherton, Cheesemore, Heap, Ridgeway, Liveing.
Result: RAOC won nine to three,
ROYAL CORPS OF TRANSPORT (West Hilt, 22nd June)—
Team: Dickenson, Rush, Priestley, Tredinnick, Atherton,
Lawrence, Eccles, Andrews. Result: RAOC won eight to four.
The Corps Team with the Royal Irish Rangers Trophy.
ROYAL ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERS
(Worplesdon, 1st July)—Trophy: The Pioneer Cup. Team:
Dickenson, Gray, Rush, Ladley, Swindley, Priestley, Hamnet,
Callan. Result: RAOC drew and retained the trophy six to six.
This match is notable as a ' needle * event—hence our
strongest foot forward, including the Director General himself.
