Transcription However, discoveries have been made and the form of the
four ex-Apprentices of last season is heartening for the future.
The performances against the Metropolitan Policemen of Imber
Court, the Gunners and Pay Corps were all gutsy affairs but
in the end strength, experience and combination skills were too
much for our youthful side.
By the time this issue comes out we will have played the
Sappers and the RMCS and be looking forward to the game
against RCT at Deepcut on 14th December.
GOLF
THE 19TT
BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS
THE Corps Championships held at Deepclit from 26th to 30th
September opened the 1977/78 season and enabled the organisers
to select the Corps team entered in the Army Badminton League
which started in October.
The event was well supported with twenty individual entries.
It was particularly pleasing to see the players from BAOR who
had traveled at their own expense to attend. Some of the * old
faithfuls'Vere there including Major Trevor Torr, Captain
Steve Goldring, Sergeant Tommy Warner and Corporal Guy
Nonis.
All matches were closely contested and produced some
good badminton. The Open Singles was a first class display
between Corporals Burke and Nonis, the latter emerging as
the winner. The doubles final was very closely matched with
both teams having their balance of youth and experience. Full
results were as follows; —
Singles-Open—Winner: Corporal Burke, 15 COD; Runner-
up: Corporal Nonis 1 (BR) Corps C Sups Bn.
Doubles-Open—Winners: Corporal Nonis and Private
Brown, 1 (BR) Corps C Sups Bn; Runners-up: Sergeant Warner,
Trg Bn and Depot RAOC, Corporal Burke, 15 COD.
Singles-Handicap—Winner: Corporal Nonis 1 (BR) Corps
C Sups Bn.
Doubles-Handicap—Winners: Corporal Nonis and Private
Brown, 1 (BR) Corps C Sups Bn.
Singles-Plate—Winner: Captain Brown, Trg Bn and Depot
RAOC
Doubles-Plate—Winners: Major Torr and Captain Goldring,
CAD Bramley.
A special prize this year was for best dressed competitor—
awarded to Captain Lilley who, resplendent in whiter than
white, whites, and immaculately pressed Corps track suit, won
hands down!
A point to note by the Committee, perhaps, is the success-
ful ' defence' of the plate by Messrs Torr and Goldring!
Appreciation is extended to Captain Curtis and those who
assisted him in the organisation of the Championships and in
particular to Mrs Dennison for presenting the prizes and Lieu-
tenant Colonel Tony Sharpe, Commanding Officer of the Train-
ing Battalion and Depot and his capable Gymnasium staff for
all the facilities provided.
CORPS
RUGBY
UP to the end of October the Corps played three matches and
held a Club Training weekend. Results have not been en-
couraging, however the character and dedication displayed by
the squad, which is made up of relatively new and untried
young players, has given a great deal of satisfaction. Chairman
Colonel Keith Hind has enlisted the help of Lieutenant Colonel
Norman Bruce, W02 Taffy Edwards and W02 Gareth Davies in
the coaching field while Major Philip Inman has succeeded as
secretary. Skipper for the season is WOl Tug Wilson, (Ordnance
Squadron, Commando Logistic Regiment), he is also a member
of a very successful VS Devonport RFC and has had an Army
trial, along with Sergeant Peter Smith (Training Centre), and
Second Lieutenant Alan Inions (19 Ordnance Field Park).
Our three matches had the following results: v Imber Court
RFC (A) lost three to thirteen, v Royal Artillery (A), lost three to
thirty five and v Royal Army Pay Corps (H) lost seven to twenty
two. With the exodus of most of the recognised Corps players
to BAOR the new look rebuild has, for example, produced a
set of halfbacks and three quarters whose average age is only
twenty.
IN
BAOR
THE Autumn Meeting of the RAOC BAOR Golfing Society
was held at the RAF Germany Golf Club, Bruggen over two
days of fine, sunny weather.
The Scratch and Handicap Medal round was played on
the first morning and Staff Sergeant Bill Burton finished with the
lowest gross score but, not having entered for the Scratch com-
petition had to be content with third place in the handicap com-
petition. Captain Malcolm Ellis RAPC, and Sergeant Thacker,
who like Staff Sergeant Burton are from SSD Dulmen, took
the first two places in the handicap competition with net scores
of sixty four and sixty eight Staff Sergeant Jim Bowen of
Ordnance Depot Antwerp whose gross eighty was two more
strokes than Burton's, took the Scratch prize.
In the Stableford Competition that afternoon Staff Sergeant
Ian Benson playing from 89 Supply Depot for the first time,
took the first prize with thirty five points, Jim Bowen's thirty
four points gaining second place after countback.

SQMS Graham Thomas hopes desperately—and unsuccessfully—*
as Sergeant Tommy Scott tends the flag on the ninth green at
Bruggen.
On the second day the Bogey Competition was played for
the St Barbara Trophy and Sergeant Mick Mays of RAOC
Stores Section was the 71 Field Workshop winner, though one
down to the course, Jim Bowen was in there again with minus
two for second place.
The Stableford Foursomes was won by Major Frank
Beaumont and Staff Sergeant Major Tony Cleavely of Senne-
lager with thirty seven points, three clear of Antwerp's Captain
Joe Mollett and, once more, Jim Bowen.
Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Young who has succeeded Lieu-
tenant Colonel Ralph Richardson as Chairman of the Society
thanked the Club for the excellent service provided and Captain
Jim Bridle and his helpers for the organisation of a successful
meeting. The DOS BAOR, Brigadier F. P. Crawley, presented
the prizes.
