Transcription The Petroleum Centre
HEADQUARTERS
rM ihe 7th October we hosied the first Petroleum Symposium
; prided by DGOS, and by pi officers from UK and BAOR.
Also on that day the history book of the Centre was
opened at page two when five unit members received their Long
Service and Good Conduct Medal from the DGOS—and we
congratulate WOl M. A. Tillotson, W02 J. A. Chandler, Staff
Sergeants D. W. Cocks, J. D. Watts and M. Franks. As usual
the Chief had a sweat on as his medal only arrived hours
before the presentation ceremony, plus he had to locate a
barber willing to cut his hair, but eventually things were sorted
out even though cut short (even the hair)!
Cheers to the DGOS on ninety years of
Major General M. CaNan having a drink at

The Chief and Sergeant J. McManamon, Chief Clerk 180
PBOP, were given the third degree by a WOl Williams, MBE,
RMP; no not trouble, but worse,—the Annual Documentation
inspection, but yet again we were awarded the * Golden Quill
and Parchment'—a Good grading; after many long hours of
slaving, sweating and in some cases swearing over AFs B 2672,
AFs B 2066, etc, etc, etc. It should be noted that a second
member of the Inspection Team, who for the purpose of these
notes will remain nameless, had to report to our Medical
Centre for some immediate medical treatment halfway through
the proceedings, never let it be said that these inspections are
not painful!
We welcome Corporal James and Private Callear, may their
stay be a good one, and we say farewell to Staff Sergeant
Kelly, and Privates Bergan and Saunders to civilian life, we wish
them every success, Corporal Jenkin to Arborfield and Lance
Corporal Brown to Northern Ireland. Congratulations are in
order for Corporal Rumbelow on his marriage to Yvonne,
Lance Corporal Hulse on his marriage to Margaret, Corporal
Slade on the birth of his son Derek, Private O'Toole on the
birth of his son Shaun David (great things some times come in
small bundles), WOl Tillotson and Staff Sergeant Harkin on
their substantive promotion and for the following, who have
been provisionally selected for substantive promotion during
1978/79: A/Sergeants Rowland, Strachan, Elsdon and Davis,
A/Corporals Rayner and Forbes and Privates Herd, Stevens,
Ridgewell and Frost to Lance Corporal.
A special thanks to Private C. G. Cave, 10 OSB who under-
took the administration of the Training and Trials Wing for
two weeks, in the absence of our documentation clerk who
was filling in during the absence of the Chief Clerk (nothing is
straight forward these days) good old Training Wing.

22nd Air Defence Regiment Workshop
IT is not very often we feature in the pages of THE GAZETTE.
We now intend to change that situation.
Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, has been the home of the
Unit during the past two years, A lot of water has flown under
the bridge during this period. The successful change over to
Rapier accounting being one of the significant landmarks in
our history here. Yet by the time these notes appear in print
we will have moved to Napier Barracks in Dortmund.
Presently all hands under the direction of W02 Ray
Candlin are busy packing stores, painting offices, and preparing
vehicles for handover. He is holding the fort while our Officer
Commanding, Captain Bradley, is away on the Ordnance Officers
Course.
We congratulate Staff Sergeant Kevin Ash worth and Lance
Corporal Dave Shirley on their recent promotion. We also
congratulate Corporal John Fryer, Privates Heath, Straw, Wilson,
Palmer* Cannell and Laydon on being selected for promotion;
Rumours have been going around that Private John Grice
has been taking ' lessons * from James Hunt; and Private
John Fennell has given added meaning to the song—* Three
wheels on my Wagon/
We say farewell to Private Paddy Reeves returning to
civilian life, and welcome Sergeant Sammy Samuel joining us
from 653 Squadron AAC.

DURING the last few weeks our PSI Sergeant Ron Markley has
been working very hard getting our account ready for the
annual visit of the Defence Auditor. We are most grateful to
him for his untiring efforts.
In September we took part in an adventure training trek
in the Mourne Mountains and although the weather was about
the worst we have experienced this year, all who were on the
exercise seemed to really enjoy the time spent in the mountains.
Sergeant John Rice continues to march, he has now added
the 3rd Yorkshire Volunteers twenty five mile march at Barns-
ley to his belt.
Congratulations to Private Ray Shaw on obtaining a good
report on his Recruits Course at the Training Centre.
B SECTION 180 PBOP
ONCE again the platoon has found it's way back to the Centre
after Exercise Arrow Express in Denmark where they assisted
280 PFP in a Petroleum filling role.
For the majority of the younger members of the platoon
this was their first experience abroad and was outlined when
the following conversation was overheard: Question: " How did

Shropshire Branch
ON the 14th October, twenty of our members under the leader-
ship of our President, Brigadier M. J. Short, made our annual
pilgrimage to the Birmingham Branch Annua! Dinner, They
did us proud and the innovation of a SAS display between dinner
and drinks was very well received. Our congratulations to Cap-
tain Bob Reid and his merry men. We admired the SAS col-
lection of unit and direction signs * acquired' from their trips
overseas so much that their SAS sign of welcome to the Associa-
tion is now resplendant at Donnington. The section of our
party which travelled by coach were thoroughly entertained by
that master Major Sid Pincher and an excellent evening was had
by all. Our thanks to the Birmingham members whom we are
always pleased to see at Donnington.
