bidden under that folksy hat and behind all that rather severe
face fungus is surely non other than that well known Corps
personality Lieutenant Colonel John Shircliff—now retired and
back with the Corps as an RO in Headquarters BAOR.
Champion-at-Arms was Corporal Jake Harrison of 62
Company; the Individual Pistol Winner was Sergeant Johnston
of 8 Field Force Ordnance Company; Individual SMG Winner
was Corporal Harrison of 62 Company; Individual Rifle Winner
was Officer Cadet Grant of 8 Field Force Ordnance Company
and the best WRAC shot was Sergeant Pat Harrison of 55
Company.
TWENTY
O N E Y E A R S O N
TWENTY ONE YEARS, and a great deal of service, spans the
handshakes between the brothers Atkins in these pictures. The
first was taken outside the Acton Recruiting Office in 1960
and shows young ' T o m m y 1 Atkins as a Corporal in the Army
Cadet Force on the day he enlisted into RAOC as a boy
soldier. He is being greeted by his older brother Ron, who
was at that time a Boy Sergeant Major in the Junior Leaders
Regiment, Royal Engineers.
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, (As you like it.)
Seriously though, John had us all rather worried when he
was taken off to Wegberg Hospital recently but 1 am very glad
to report that he is back on duty and fit and well.
Can't help thinking though, that the splendid new beard is
there only to compliment and to improve his inimitable after
dinner cabaret performance.
1144 PLATOON TEAM WINS
THE Annual RAOC TA Shoot was held in Siberian conditions
at Strensall. The prizes were presented by Colonel Walker,
Colonel Reserve Army RAOC.
At the beginning
In the second picture, taken outside Headquarters British
Army of the Rhine at Rheindahlen, WOl Tom Atkins is again
on the right, this time congratulating brother Ron on his pro-
motion to WOl.
The Atkins* have never served together, but they came
close to it in Germany where Ron is a Park Supervisor with
Commander Royal Engineers at Willich and Tom is chief
photographer at Headquarters BAOR.
The T A winners,
The winning team was 1144 Laundry Platoon, captained by
Captain John MacFadyen, comprising Sergeant Harry Wearing,
Corporals Peter Bailey, Jake Harrison and Kenny Rayson and
Private Terry Fordham.
