MILITARY OPERATIONS
HOW nice to see another article from
the Whitehall end of the Ministry of
Defence in the April edition of THE
GAZETTE.
Sergeant Harry Hay returned from
Exercise Wintex and had to have two
days off to recover, obviously he
found it more tiring than he had previously anticipated,
Staff Sergeant Chris Morris has still been spending a lot of
time on vufoil preparation, it has been rumoured recently that
he is thinking of changing his trade and becoming a draughtsman.
We say farewell to Sergeant Dave Bellew this month and
trust he enjoyed his first few months in the Corps. He has
just moved to DSAS and we wish him all the best for the
future.
Our new arrival is Lance Corporal Lynne Grundie who joins
us from Beaconsfield. Already she has proved to be an asset
during a recent GS briefing she willingly took on the job of
slide/vufoil operator. Also she has been seen with Corporal
Pauline Cove jogging round St James's Park at lunchtime. It is
nice to see an effort being made on the keep fit side of life.
Corporal Helen Beavis is getting married later this month
and we offer her and her intended our sincere congratulations
and best wishes for the future. We are pleased to say that she
is not leaving us, merely returning as Corporal Young.
Headquarters Director General of Ordnance Services
ORD 3. One of the highlights of the month wasr Brigadier
Crawley's appointment as ADC to the Queen. Our most sincere
congratulations go to him. The other highlight was when the
QMG, General Sir Richard Worsley, presented our Chief Clerk,
Staff Sergeant Howard Cutler, with the British Empire Medal
for his outstanding services in Headquarters BAOR. An enjoy-
able lunchtime was had by all at the Sergeants Mess on that day.
What a month, it * rained T clerks, we now have our full
entitlement of clerical assistance, the first time in over a year.
We welcomed with open arms Mrs Enid Croft, Mrs Pam Jones
and Miss Amy Cope and may their stay in Ord 3 be a long
and happy one.
On the sporting side, our S02 Coord Major ' Miles Miles'
Ken Mullins put up a good show in the London Marathon and
finished in a very good time for a ' veteran * of three and a half
hours. Well done Ken, you can now exchange your running
shoes for boots DMS, BFT season has started again.
Sadly we say farewell to Mrs Audrey Pilcher, our stalwart
Clerical Officer in Ord 3a, who has been with the branch since
Headquarters Base Depots moved from Didcot to Andover.
We would like to give her our best wishes, and hope she enjoys
her new job as much,
Directorate of Supply Management
S MAN 1. Contrary to popular belief S Man 1 has not been
disestablished! Our absence from THE GAZETTE has been due to
the pressure of work caused by the Moratorium. Suffice to say
that the mere mention of * Moratorium' had even our strongest
officers foaming at the mouth at one stage.
We take this belated opportunity to welcome back John
Bentley from his long-awaited operation. To John we offer
our congratulations on his selection for promotion to HEO,
Also our congratulations go to Geoff Lampitt on his promotion
to SEO and subsequent posting to Ord 3. Geoff was suitably
wined out by the S Man 1 staff at a local hostelry and lunched
out of the Mess by the Officers. We wish him well in his new
appointment. His replacement is David Rae who joined us
from Chilwell.
On the Indian's front we have had movement too. Mrs
Caroline McGlashan has left us to have a baby, Miss Becky
Oldershaw has left us for OCT on promotion to Clerical Officer
and Miss Pam Orr has transferred to DCT where her wealth
of knowledge will be put to good use.
Our new arrivals are Mrs Anne Bowman, Mrs Peggy
Bray, Mrs Sue Falcon and Miss Lynn Martin to whom we bid
welcome and hope they have an enjoyable time working in
S Man I.
We are now getting used to seeing our Chief Clerk on a
regular basis. He hasn't been in hospital to sort out an old
parachuting injury to his ankle for three months now! After
being cut up so often he seems very cut up—(if you get our
drifty^even his scars have scars! The Branch congregated in the
LE(A) Sergeants Mess to witness the QMG presenting W02
Brookes with the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
After the presentation the medal was well and truly christened
and strangely enough * Q ' Brookes didn't return to work that
day'. Incidentally,
it is strongly denied that M the inscription on the
u
medal was for services to medical science !
STOP PRESS: Major Stan Sedman LI has finally received his
posting order . . . . back to the land of the * Green Mafia *
!
Never slow on the uptake he has been selling copies of his
posting order as an example of " Jim'll Fix i t " I His new unit
(5 LI) should benefit enormously by Stan's period in S Man I
during which he has learned just how to beat clerical bans,
ration bans, the Standard Priority System—in short all our
secret ways of defeating Quartermasters attempts to clean out
the RAOC storesheds into their own, although as a favour he
has promised to keep all this to himself in recognition of his
happy days with us.
S MAN 2. Until quite recently there have been very few
comings and goings in S Man 2—hence the absence of any notes.
However, during the last month or so we have seen numerous
new faces about the place. We welcome Major Doug Stobie
who took over from Major Frank Falle who had gone to sort
out all the problems in MOD in six months prior to his BAOR
posting! We also welcome Major Leslie Jordan who took over
from Captain Ron Wilkinson on his posting to BAOR. Both
Major Stobie and Major Jordan joined us from sunny Cyprus.
We wish Major Falle and Captain Wilkinson well in their new
appointments.
The next new face to appear was Major Mike Turner who is
transferring from the Royal Anglian Regiment. We welcome
Major Turner not only to Andover but to the Corps and hope
that his tour will be a pleasant one. Major Turner took over
from Major Davy Hudson who went to 1 (BR) Corps on pro-
motion—our congratulations and best wishes in his new post
Another newcomer was Captain Mark Frazer who joined us
from BAOR to relieve Major Derek Glarvey RTR. We wel-
come Captain Frazer and wish Major Glarvey all the best on his
retirement after a long and distinguished career.
The last new face to welcome was Mrs Mavis Pol glaze who
although new to Andover, joined us from our own cell (S Man
2a(3)) in Bicester, Mavis took over from Peggy Bray in the
Registry/Co-ord section and Peggy has moved on to learn
all about the intricacies of weapons in S Man 1.
The DSM(A) five-a-side football team—drawn from stars of
both S Man 1 and S Man 2 has played remarkably well all
through the season and finished second (from the bottom!) It
did however manage to get a few of the otherwise desk bound
chaps out kicking the ball around which they all enjoyed very
much.
WOl Phillips has just completed a three week Management
course at the School of Ordnance and now professes to know
all the theories behind good management! On a more sombre
note we are at present without Mr Bernard Clarke who had a
rather rough time with appendicitis—we wish him a speedy
recovery and hope he will be back with us shortly.
