IT is our proud boast that, of the thirty-odd
NCOs and Officers wearing our badge in
the international environment, we are well
represented in three major British sports;
football—Captain Mike Hartley, W02 Ray
Dewsnap, Sergeants Tom McAllion and
Mick Hockham, Corporals Chris McLean
and Ronny (Geordie) Young (who has been
selected to play in the Corps BAOR side);
hockey — Staff Sergeant Laurie Wardell,
Sergeants Bob McCarthy, Jim Gauld and
Phil James and Corporal Jimmy Shanks;
and in rugby—Corporal Trev Gal tress, All
of these teams are enjoying varied successes
in their respective leagues and competitions.
As well as home-grown sports, the majority of our number
actively participate in other international games, played in-
ternally, which vary from American Softball to German Hand-
ball. What we lose in skills is soon made up in enthusiasm and
willingness which sometimes causes raised eyebrows and
certainly brings a new dimension to the sports for the native
participants.
Movement is a strong theme here at the moment as, in-
evitably, we bid farewell to those posted to pastures more
green. Staff Sergeant Kev Hudson has departed to the hallowed
halls of RMA Sandhurst, Staff Sergeant Bill Barlow is shortly
to head for the hills of Wiltshire and Headquarters TJKLF, and
Corporal Neil Cox to the heat of Zimbabwe with a six month
supply of sun tan oil. Rumour has it the Headquarters is soon
to get its very first Ordnance Private stationed here. It has
been said that this will provide an ideal opportunity for budding
RPCl students to practice their skills, but I am sure that this
ex-patriot of COD Donnington will be able to show them a
thing or two.
Northern Army Group
IT can now be said that NORTHAG
personnel have at last completely recovered
from the awe inspiring sequence of events
known to the unfortunate few as Exercise
Wintex 81. One of the lessons learnt from
this successful exercise is that it is now
considered desirable for all RAOC Staff
Clerks who are NATO bound, to suffer
from insomnia!
Turning to the social scene, the RAOC
Association Social Evening held at Viersen
went down extremely well.
WOl Bob
Irwin and Corporal Mick Horner earned
fame and fortune by combining their talents
and winning the * Marathon Tiddly Winks
Trophy.' W02 Geoff Gamut meanwhile showed that he is
almost ready for retirement by giving a masterful display in the
leisurely sport of carpet bowls. A superb meal was provided and
later on the * Tankard Christening" rounded off the evening
well. Our sincere thanks go to Viersen for organising this
memorable evening and we look forward to the next time.
Our small band of merry men have done well on the pro-
motion front. The following owe drinks all round: Corporals
Mick Ford and Joe Meecham have been granted their sub-
stantive rank, and Roy Bulloch has just been promoted to
A/Corporal. Corporal Meecham incidentally is soon to be
posted to the UK—such is the price of success.
We also say farewell to Corporal * Q * Haslam (to Belize)
and to Lance Corporal Brian Williams (to COD Bicester), and
last but not least to Staff Sergeant Tony Garland on his posting
to Cyprus.
We welcome the following; Staff Sergeant Don Gosling
from LE(A) T Lance Corporal Roy Whittal from COD Donning-
ton and Private Jim Cleland from Depot. Private Cleland in
fact temporarily joined Headquarters NORTHAG to attend
Exercise Wintex 81, decided that this was the place for him,
and within fourteen days of Endex was back with us as a
permanent resident All three new arrivals now find them-
selves working together on COMNORTHAG's personal staff.
(Have a few strings been pulled here?). Their first priorities
are to remove from their vocabulary such words as ' lunchbreaks,
free evenings, weekends/ Staying with the same office; as well
as three new arrivals, there has also been a delivery of a DATIC
word processor which WOl Ian Birchall guards day and night
after having
mastered the art of programming, we must not
l
mention He ' who was the teacher.
As a direct result of this time saving machine, W02 John
Russell was allowed seven consecutive days well earned leave
which he spent in Tenerife. John is optimistic in the hope that
the same privilege will be granted some time in 1982.
To round off our congratulations, best wishes go to Corporal
Stuart Macdonald and his wife Anne who were married in Gwent
recently.
Headquarters BAOR
THE West Rhine Branch of the RAOC Associa-
tion held its tint games evening of the year at
Ordnance Depot Viersen and this was attended
by Major General Brown who was visiting
BAOR at the time. The evening was a great
success for Headquarters BAOR in that the com-
bined Headquarters BAOR/Headquarters NOR-
THAG teams defeated the 15 Ordnance Group
and 3 BAD teams in two of the three games
and were runners-up to 3 BAD in the third
game. The marathon tiddlywinks/dice was won by WOl Bob
Irwin, WOs2 Geoff Garratt and John Todd and Corporal Mick
Horner; the carpet bowls by W02 Jack Strachan and Corporal
Dave Chippendale; whilst Major Phil Taylorson, Captain Roy
Southworth, Captain Jim Lamb and Lance Corporal Alan Brash
