RAOC AID SOCIETY
ANNUAL REPORT
(Continued from page 6.)
An ex-SQMS, aged eighty four, and who served in the
RAOC for twenty seven years needed financial help for external
house repairs. This was granted by the Aid Society.
An ex-Corporal who had been an RAOC soldier for eighteen
years, lost both his legs in a traffic accident in 1977, shortly
after which his wife died. Despite very careful budgeting he
found himself in financial difficulties with unforseen necessary
outgoings. The Aid Society made a grant to assist with out-
standing bills.
An ex-Private who was an epileptic and suffering from.
angina was living with his wife in appalling conditions. They
had very little furniture and no bed linen and had no money
with which to purchase a few items to make life more comfort-
able, The Aid Society made a grant to meet the need.
An ex-Corporal, single, who served in the RAOC through-
out the 1939/45 war and who was a very sick man suffering
from emphysema and chronic bronchitis, lived in a damp house
and help was needed to purchase an additional supply of coal
The Aid Society made a grant for this purpose.
An ex-Warrant Officer, who served in the RAOC in Burma
during the 1939/45 war, settled in India after being demobilised.
He was suffering from cancer of the face and financial aid was
needed urgently for medical treatment. The Aid Society, in
conjunction with the British Commonwealth Ex-Services League,
helped to alleviate the financial problems.
A RAOC{V) Territorial Army Private, with five children,
had suffered a fire in his home, leaving the interior of the house
in an appalling state, Much of the furniture and the family's
personal clothing had to be replaced and rooms redecorated.
Naturally both the soldier and his wife were completely de-
moralised. Financial help was needed urgently to make the
house habitable and the Aid Society gave assistance.
An ex-Private, collapsed and died whilst on a day trip to
France leaving a widow and three young children. Hospital
and other charges raised by the French authorities were high
and this caused the widow to run into debt. In addition the
children needed clothing. The Aid Society made a grant to
help overcome the immediate problem.
The wife of an ex-Corporal who had served in the RAOC
for twenty two years including war service in Korea, had died
from cancer leaving him with four young sons to bring up.
His father had also died a few months previous leaving him
with two funeral bills to pay and help was needed. This was
given by the Aid Society.
Some extracts from letters received during 1980 from those
helped by the RAOC Aid Society:—
*' I would like to say thank you to the Aid Society for the
kind consideration given to my application for financial help.
My prolonged illness prevented me from regular employment and
your assistance came at a time when I really needed h\"

" I have just returned from a convalescent holiday which
your Aid Society and The Royal British Legion financed. May
I say how grateful I am for your help and am pleased to say
that it was a most enjoyable break especially as I now live on
my own and am disabled. Thank you for your generosity."
"
On behalf of the family of the late
I would
like to express my grateful thanks for your generous donation
towards the funeral expenses. It is nice to know that people
still care."

My wife and I both wish to thank you for the generous
grant you made to us. We can hardly show our appreciation
enough. It certainly has helped us considerably.'*
" I wish to thank you very much for your generous grant,
This has paid my rent and electricity arrears and I am almost
free of debt now which is a big load off my mind."
INFLATION AND THE AID SOCIETY
THE following two pieces of statistical information are of
interest. Over the last decade, according to ' T h e British
Economy Figures' published by Lloyds Bank, the purchasing
power of the £ has been reduced to approximately a third of
what it was in 1970, Consequently, to retain the purchasing
power of ten years ago, three times as much money would
be required in the Accumulated General Fund. Unfortunately
the Aid Society is £46,571 short of that target.
The rate of inflation during 1980 was 15.1% as measured
by the retail prices index (all items).
The Aid Society's
Accumulated General Fund increased by only 13.34%, which
resulted in a slippage in the real value of the fund of £3,247
during the year.
In view of the anticipated increase in expenditure over the
next two decades it is important that the value of the fund in
real terms is not merely maintained—it should be increased.
