Transcription MATERIALS HANDLING TRIALS UNIT
AS the ' New Boy' 1 have been given the honour of recording
the 'Glorious Deeds* of MHTU, or to put it another way.
lumbered to write Tim GAZirrn- Notes.
Before 1 arrived I had conjured up a vision of flamboyant
types discussing how Ihey had lost a fork at a hundred miles
per hour on a prototype Eager Beaver or k baled o u t ' of a
smoking Order Picker. Not true I'm afraid; the ' Test Pilots '
turned out to be rather more serious minded types who work
long and hard solving the problems of Materials Handling.
I shall attempt during my tour as duty scribe to give you
an insight into what really goes on behind closed doors. Episode
one starts with the Crane Operators Course. The Instructors are
Sergeant Taunton, Corporals Watson and Candy, This intrepid
trio teach H.GV3 drivers the skills of operating the " Iron
Fairy 1 and the Rapier. They also turn their hand to Slinger
and Gantry Operator instruction. Apart from their duties of
resident Instructors you may have seen them around your
unit doing Continuation Training with your Crane Operators if
not at the Aldershot Display with our " Sputnik.' They do
enjoy variety at work.
Congratulations to Lance Corporal Bannister on his selection
to the Corps football team, we hope it will be a long successful
association.
Welcome to Staff Sergeant and Mrs Carroll from Dulmen,
unfortunately their stay will be brief due to pending promotion.
The Bathing Belle Ortenteerers. Private Benjamin, Private Luen T
Lance Corporal Evans and Private Kent.
Looking somewhat
bedraggled but seemingly enjoying it!
The Walkers have been at it again with their main event
a two hundred mile plus hike along the Fosse Way being the
subject of a special article for T H E GAZETTE, They have how-
ever—by way of light relief recently taken part in the Around
Aintree Charity Walk and the trophy for the most miles covered
within the twenty four hours (101.8!) was won by Sergeant
Paddy Cullen with the remainder namely W 2 John Brooks,
Staff Sergeant Orchard, Sergeant Ambler and Corporal Finley
all completing more than fifty miles.
In badminton the team ended the season on a winning note
beating third in the league Grimsbury seven to two. This win
completed a fine fight against relegation which saw us win four
of our last six matches. Postings are once again playing their
part in our future as we shall lose four players before the start
of next season, namely Staff Sergeant Bob Waller, Sergeant
Norman and Linda Alcorn and Tilley; we shall miss their skills
but wish them well in their new clubs.
Central Ammunition Depot Kineton
A LOT to report on during this month
with several events jockeying for first
place. Pride of place however must go
to the Station Soccer Team who after
finishing a creditable third in the Western
District Services League won their league
in the Banbury Sunday Competition.
They attend a dinner at the end of
the month when their medals are being
presented by Bobby Moore the former
England Captain.
Climax to the season however was a very successful match
for charity against an Aston Villa side. We lost—predictably—
by ten to one with an element of luck in our one goal which
was a penalty awarded in the last minute by the referee Lieu-
tenant Dennis Rimmer RPC of 522 Company! Villa fielded
a side with a blend of youth and experience the latter in the form
of two full internationals and everyone of the spectators
thoroughly enjoyed a memorable evening. The match raised
£500 for the Richard Hitchcock appeal and Staff Sergeant
Richardson our Pay Staff Sergeant and soccer rep is to be
congratulated on all the hard work he put into the event.
14th May saw the first anniversary of the opening of Marl-
borough Depot and the event was celebrated with an Inter
Company It's a Knockout Competition. As one can imagine
many amusing incidents occurred, far too many to mention but
one or two will be in my memory for a long time to come—like
the RPC Company completely baffled when it came to build-
ing a huge puzzle wall—even with a picture to help them \
And of the Master Chef—he's Irish!—who having successfully
defeated all attempts to knock him and his bucket of water off
the greasy pole promptly took said water all the way back to
the start which was not the idea! And finally Lance Corporal
Askew RBME who having ' straddled * the same greasy pole
rather sharply was heard to speak in a rather high pitched voice
for days afterwards. A very successful day ended with ' B '
Company running out winners with the minor prizes for best
devised game and best joker going to Ammunition and Head-
quarter Companies respectively.
The weekend 16th/ 17th May saw the Fullbore Shooting
Team sallying forth to do battle in the Western District SAM
with the primary aim of qualifying for Bisley RASAM 8L
Alas although we finished a very creditable sixth out of thirty
four teams and won the cup for the highest placed Non
Infantry Unit we failed to gain one of only two allocations for
Bisley and must now wait upon UKLF and the ARA to show
mercy as a result of our appeal to them \
Our very active Buffaloes have again been doing charitable
work—this time in conjunction with the Leamington Branch they
organised an event to raise funds for a Spina Bifida Chair for
Johnathan Swift a local boy from Warwick. All who participated
are to be congratulated on such a worthwhile venture.
This month has also seen the presentation of the Long
Service and Good Conduct Medals to Sergeant Holland RAMC,
Sergeant Boyd and Corporals Murray and Lever and our con-
gratulations go to all four on their award
