Headquarters Northern Army Croup
THE (very) merry band of Staff Clerks
here in Headquarters NORTHAG have had
a surprisingly eventful month, culminating
in the marriage of Lance Corporal Bill
Currie to Melanie Jane. We wish all the
very best for the future to you both. An-
other marriage on the way is Corporal
Paul Callow and Catherine.
L a s t m o n t h w a s s o m e t h i n g to
remember for the sporting (FIT) members
of the Headquarters. Firstly, the Annual
six-a-side competition took place with two
teams entering on our behalf. Considering
the exceptionally high standard of football
both teams did very well. Special thanks to
W02 Geoff Garratt who put in a great deal of extra time and
effort to get the teams prepared. This in turn was (we think)
appreciated by his branch Chief who allowed him seven con-
secutive days off for a sailing course/holiday. W 2 Barry
Quigley was the pride of the Headquarters when he came joint
first in the BAOR RAOC bowling championship, well done a
great performance. With yet another sporting event coming up
shortly in the form of the Athletics Meeting everybody including
Corporal Williams are out pounding the track. The Team
Captain and Assistant, WOs2 Doug Boshier and Barry Quigley
respectively are punishing themselves trying to achieve the Super
High Standard for the five thousand metres.
Congratulations go to the following on their selection for
promotion: WOs2 Jim Gemmell and John Russell, Staff Sergeant
Tony Grace and Sergeant Laing Purfit.
Lance Corporal Nobby Clarke has reported to the Depot,
hoping to return a fully fledged Bl. He has left behind a
number of Clerks attempting their Bl by correspondance, under
the ever watchful eye of the Headquarters Superintendent Clerk,
Bob Irwin.
Coming now to the unusually hectic arrival/departure scene;
We say goodbye to Staff Sergeant Tony Garland who has left
us for the slightly warmer climate of Cyprus! to Staff Sergeant
Tony Grace who leaves for the Upper Echelons of SHAPE, and
to Sergeant Laing Purfit who has gone to the LRRP School.
We hope all goes well in your new jobs.
A warm welcome goes t o : Staff Sergeant Mike Blair, Sergeant
Colin McNaughton, Corporal Martin Meighan and Privates
Pete AH, Paul Compton and Quentin Thompson, whom we hope
will enjoy their stay with us.
Before closing, the boss (he who is not to be mentioned)
has been scribbling furiously for the last couple of weeks on
coloured paper, muttering the words " I should have been an
Accountant"!.
It is something to do with getting us all the swish offfce
equipment he usually manages to get wherever he goes. We are
all ** with " Word Processing and Electronic Office but does an
Optical Character Reader really replace two Corporal Staff
Clerks?
Headquarters BAOR
DESPITE being the time of the year for heads
down and look in at Estimates, the Head-
quarters has been busy on the sporting front.
A Rheindahlen Garrison team entered the Inter
Services Marathon held at RAF Swinderby and
achieved the runners up position in the team
event (losing by only four minutes to 3 Para)
and were the best team from BAOR. The RAOC
star of the Garrison, team was Corporal Reg
Black of Equipment and Supply Management
who finished thirty second in a field of over four hundred starters
in a time of two hours forty six minutes, despite suffering from
leg cramp in the last few miles.

W 2 Phil W y l i e is congratulated by the Chief-of-Shaff Head-
quarters BAOR, Major General W . R. Taylor, after presenting him
with the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal,
RAOC runners were also in the forefront at the Rhein-
dahlen Garrison Athletics Meeting. From AMIS Branch, WOl
Les Cheetham took second place in the four hundred metres in
a time of 55,3 seconds (at forty one years of age!), Sergeant
Colin Whittington third in the five thousand metres and third
in the Steeplechase and Sergeant Dave Le Page third in the
two hundred metres. Staff Sergeant Robbie Robinson from G3
Public Information laid down his squash racket to compete
in the eight hundred metres and came second; Corporal Reg
Black (with cracked rib) took second place in the fifteen
hundred metres and steeplechase; and spirited performances
were also given by Sergeant Dave Latham from G2 Int
and Corporal Martin Manning and Lance Corporal Gary Bain
of Int and Sy Gp ;
The long winter efforts of the Supply Directorate Small
Bore Shooting team, comprising Captain Roy Southworth (Cap-
tain). Major John Staples, W 2 Ian Grey and Sergeant Frank
Adams (all from Supplies Combat!), have been rewarded by
achieveing runners-up position in the RAOC BAOR competition
and third place in the Home Cup.
Keeping the pressure on the sporting front, G4 and the
Service Branches have organised a Summer Sports Competition
with the following events to take place over the next few months:
swimming, cricket, hockey, football and volleyball. Watch this
space for highlights of these events.
A new sporting event being organised by Supply Secretariat
is the ' marathon traveller of the month.' This event has been
inspired by the initiative and cunning that is now needed by
individuals in these days of financial constraint to obtain duty
authority to travel anywhere over seventy five miles distance
in BAOR. The outright winner of this event for May was
without doubt, Major Terry Byrd of Systems and Automation
who, in his efforts to automate anyone who stands still for too
long, has travelled the length and breadth of BAOR almost
daily.
The anticipated arrival at the beginning of May of Corps
Order No. I had the usual nail biting effect on most senior
ranks in the Headquarters. Our commiserations go out to the
disappointed ones and hearty congratulations to the chosen few.
Congratulations also to W 2 Phil Wylie of the COS office
on receiving the Lang Service and Good Conduct Medal, and
to Corporal Jim Lane of Supplies Combat on receiving the
Zimbabwe Independence Medal for services in Zimbabwe
between December 1979 and February 1980. The accompany-
ing photograph shows W 2 Wylie being congratulated by Major
