The hoekey team are heading for a bit of glory by reaching

to one afler e\tra time thanks lo two goals by Lance Corporal
Taffy Golden. In the semi-final we beat Viersen one nil thanks
lo a wonderful return to form by the team's ' father * Captain
Jim McGrellis. Scored, Tm told just as the team captain was
about to substitute him for a breather! Well done team and we
hope to report a win in the final which will be played against
Combat Supplies Battalion.
Major Robinson and Sergeant Bob Scott both of squash
fame, recently took on Sergents Don Robertson and Geoff
Edwards both of rugby fame in a gentle jousting competition
after a recent Sergeants Mess Regimental Dinner. The rugby
men won, but not without a struggle.
Again we can report a large turnover of personnel.
We have said farewell to: W02 O'Neill (Det Northern
Ireland), Staff Sergeant Proctor, Sergeants Long and Parker,
Corporals Gelling (of beautiful legs fame), McKie, Turner 123
(Det Northern Ireland), Lance Corporals Barlow, Bartlett,

CARS seem to be the in-thing this month. The Chief Clerk has
just got himself a new Jap job. Quite a nice looking car, shame
about the number plate though! It seems that it should be put
into quarantine along with the OCs car which at long last has
had the brown spots which keep appearing diagnosed as rust,
not measles although Renautls are not yet convinced. The
Admin Officer, Captain Barron took delivery of his new Ford
Granada Estate on the evening of 21st May, and during the
22nd rumour has it that he managed to run it in and get some
work done!
While we are on the subject of four wheels, congratulations
are in order to Captain Chris Lloyd, Corporals Pete Stankovic
and Percy Hulse and Lance Corporal Rickie Stevens on the
Munster Road Safety Competition: third-
StafT Sergeant Geordie Symons is now back again looking
tanned and fat after his holiday in the South of France, He
says he isn't going again because of all the lovely sights he saw
on the beaches.
Courses seem to be one of the main pastimes at present
and congratulations are extended to WOl Mick McCabe who
has recently passed an Elementary Helmsman Course. Rumour
has it that he is trying to change his coming commission into a
Naval one. Corporal Davey has successfully passed a Basic
German Course, Sergeant Gray passed his Introductory German
and Corporal Waters his MTI Course. Private Cliffe passed
his driving test, hooray, one more for the duty drivers roster.
Sergeant Price is walking round asking if it was really worth the
drive to Wembley to watch England lose against Scotland, some
people never do learn da they?
The Thousands of saplings that were planted to replace the
trees that were felled are now all showing signs of life and there
are lots of little leaves all over the place.
There are no new arrivals in the unit this month, but
Corporal Almond has left for Colchester and Corporal Patterson
leaves at the end of the month to spend his last few months in
UK before attempting the rigours of civilian life.

HEADQUARTERS.
Conductor Johnston and Sergeant Power
combined with SSM McLarty and Mr Martin of NAAFI Car
Sales Rheindahlen, to form a team in an Association Football
Sports Quiz sponsored by Rothmans and held in the Marl-
borough Club in Rheindahlen. Six teams com]>eted and our
entrants were successful in winning the competition. There is
no truth in the scurillous rumour currently in circulation that
the victory had some connection with the fact that Mr Johnston
Soccer quiz winners.
organised the event! Featured in the photograph are:—Front
row Sergeant Power, Mr Martin, Conductor Johnston, SSM Mc-
Larly. Rear row Richard Astbury of BFBS and Mr Geoff
Hurst, ex-West Ham and England footballer.
Sporting activity within this small Headquarters is not
restricted merely to attendance at a quiz. During the lunch
time of each working day we are treated to the sight of most
of our relative elderly members running in the local stad
wald T and can any other five men tug-of-war team exceed the
combined age of one hundred and ninety eight years of our com-
petitors in the Ordnance Depot Viersen sports? Despite their
handicap of anno domini they succeeded in reaching the final
and were only defeated by Stores Group in a hard fought
struggle,
Finally congratulations are due to SSM Marshall on the *
grant of that acting rank.
ORDNANCE
DEPOT VIERSEN.
This month has been
especially notable for having no official visits and our prowess
for extra mural activities has come to the fore. Our nocturnal
athletes competed in the third RAOC BAOR ten-pin bowling
championships and came first and second in the doubles cham-
pionship with the 'Chief 1 SQMS Bill Cowell and SSM Jim
McLarty of MSU being overall victors with one thousand five
hundred and fifty six points and Staff Sergeant Bill Allen who
with his substitute, in real life permanent partner, Mrs Vanessa
Allen as runners-up with one thousand four hundred and thirty
five points.
The shooting team continues on its steady way by competing
in the Rhine Area skill-at-arms meeting, winning the team
Minor Units Pistol Trophy and qualifying to represent this area
at Bis ley by virtue of good all round performances with six of
the team of eight being in the top forty in the SLR and all the
SMG and pistol team members in the top twenty four places
of each weapon. The hockey team beat the RAOC Wulfen
team convincingly six goals to one in the quarter final of the
DOS BAOR Cup but unfortunately lost one goal to nil in the
semi-final to our arch rivals at Bracht. On the football side
SSM Welsh, who must be congratulated on his well deserved
promotion, continues to coach and play for the Corps BAOR
Team.
Cricket has started on the victorious note of last season
with a seven wickeL win over AFCENT in which Private East
ACC took five wickets for eighteen and SQMS Reifer scored
thirty one runs. SQMS Reifer is also representing the Corps
in this sport. We have also held our annual athletics meeting
in which there were some tremendous efforts notably Corporal
'Whinny 1 Allen who won one hundred, two hundred and
four hundred metres individual and one hundred and two
hundred metres relay team medals.
Departures this month must take special mention of Mrs
Marnie Simms our SSAFA Nursing Sister who departs for U K
and with her goes our gratitude for the sterling work she has
performed on behalf of the unit and its personnel.
Other
departures are SSMs Pete Bath and Dave Haugh, Sergeants
Alec Cumming and Dai Wood and Corporals Terry Leefarr and
Phil Ritchie.
We welcome SQMSs Pete Yearsley and Kel Adamson, Staff
Sergeant Mick Stewart, Sergeant Alan Davidson, and Corporals
Cliff Skingley and Pete Elstub.
