Ministry of Defence
WITH big upheavals taking place in
the Defence world you can imagine
life in one of the Chiefs of Staff's
offices isn't all wine and roses at the
moment! But 1 am glad to say that
everyone is bearing up gallantly and
doing their bit for General and
Country, Leave time is also around
again and one of our shorthandwriters, Sergeant Kate Payne
returned from a fortnight in Tunisia making us all extremely
jealous of her tan and so dark is she now that the MAI could
only say "Halloo dere" when he caught sight of her! Also
this month we are all giving ourselves pats on the back for
various achievements and endeavours. Firstly our congratulations
go to Sergeant Paddy Killeen on his engagement and we wish
him and Dawn, his fiancee, all the best for the future, Paddy,
together with Corporal Chris Rhodes are celebrating their sub-
stantive promotions and also in the promotion stakes, con-
gratulations are due to Staff Sergeant Jim Byrne on his pro-
visional selection for W02. Well done all.
Turning to sport now and you will all be glad to hear that
WOl George Ottley and Paddy Killeen completed the London
Marathon in very respectable times and although tired and
sore afterwards they are very much looking forward to the next
one. In the football world Sergeant John Barnes together with
eight other Corps members who play in the MOD football
team are celebrating winning the London District 2nd Division
Championship and with it promotion to the big league next
season and are full of confidence about keeping up their excel-
lent record—well done everyone. Finally, a warm welcome to
A/Sergeant Jim Kilby who joins us on promotion from JAR1C.
Coffee break extraordinary.
Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hawley
cuts the cake.
this part of the world continues to be downcast, showing no
signs of an impending summer season.
No doubt this will
encourage overseas holidays: certainly Colonel Mike Owen, who
recently returned from Switzerland looking refreshed and ready
to commence battle once more, is an excellent advertisement
for such a thought!
History was recently made by the arrival of Private John
Brown from CAD Kineton. He is certainly the first RAOC
private soldier to be posted to LE(A) at Andover and will
probably be the last too! However, with his name how can he
possibly go wrong? Other moves involve Sergeant Dave Flinn,
who has left us on posting to I (BR) Corps after three years
of very zealous and energetic service in DGOS Secretariat; during
his stay with us he remained a leading tight on the soccer scene
and became a proficient squash player. We wish him well in his
new post and welcome to Andover as his replacement Sergeant
Mick East who arrived recently from Belgium with his family.
SSM Graham Wood is also preparing the way for handover
prior to leaving us, for commissioning in October; he will not
escape from the clutches of Headquarters DGOS just yet how-
ever, as he is to take over the duties of SO/DGOS during August
so that Captain Bill Burnip can take some well earned leave.
The atrocious weather has played havoc with our cricketers
but notwithstanding Lieutenant Colonel Graham Cowell, Major
Pat Wall, SSM Graham Wood and SQMS Brian Rose have all
managed to fit in a couple of fixtures, with the first named
managing considerably more!
Finally, our congratulations to Helen Reeder (Ord la) on
establishing herself as a proficient First Aider and has recently
been to London to collect a trophy—to prove it!
MILITARY
OPERATIONS
BY the time this article goes to press we will have said farewell
to our SO/ DMO, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Wall is, who is
retiring after thirty six years service. However, we are pleased
to say that he will not be moving too far away. He will shortly
be taking up an appointment in the Directorate of Army
Recruiting as an R02. We really do wish him all the best for the
future.
As a result of our sponsorship of Sergeant Pam Dibben
on her slirnathon she was able to raise £30 in aid of charity.
Well done Pam for all your efforts, 1 am sure it was not easy
living on lettuce for a month. You certainly achieved your aim
of having less to tan during your tour in Cyprus.
Our new faces this month include Sergeant Alan Cooper
who joins us from the Employment Training School, Sergeant
Rod Daddow from ACIO Glasgow and Lance Corporal Maria
Wells from 29 Company WRAC in Rheindahlen. We wish them
all an enjoyable tour in Military Operations.
We offer our congratulations to Staff Sergeants Harry Hay
and Barry Humphrey on their acting rank and to Staff Sergeant
Chris Morris on his substantive promotion.
Staff Sergeant Paul Byron leaves us early next month for
the land of milk and honey, we wish him good luck in 2nd
Armoured Division.
ORD 3> This month we say farewell to Lieutenant Colonel Brian
Allen, who is leaving us for the pastures of 3 BAD and welcome
in his place Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Miles who has been
posted in from DSM(A), across the road! May he have an
enjoyable tour with Ord 3.
On the sporting scene, young and old alike have been battling
it out on the LE(A) tennis courts in the mixed pairs knock-out
competition.
Major Maurice Knights (Retd) and Mrs Liz
Jordan, our veterans who despite their age, have put on a good
show and knocked various other players out of the championship.
Our Miss Amy Cope (the branch sports mistress—slip of the pen)
managed to get into the semi finals, but was defeated! Continuing
with the ' frilly knicker scene * PS to DBD. Mrs Sue Hulme. has
taken up the challenge in the local netball competition.
With all these strains and pains of the summer sporting
season it is just as well that Major Ken Mullins, our S02 Coord,
has passed his ' Doctor Kildair' course in First Aid (it's just au
excuse to practice mouth to mouth resuscitation),
Headquarters Director General of Ordnance Services
THE old Headquarters DGOS Secretariat team managed a
last office party before the amalgamation with Ord 1. This
occurred when we celebrated with much pleasure the sixtieth
birthday of Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hawley. He thought we
had all forgotten until the birthday cake and wine was pro-
duced in lieu of mid morning coffee! Our congratulations again
Arthur—may you celebrate many more.
