Army Air Corps
2 AIRCRAFT SUPPORT UNIT
OUR most outstanding success recently
has been the winning of the Dove Trophy
for a march and weapons handling com-
petition during the ARU.
S02 Aviation (Supplies), staged a
very successful * Ord Air * conference
when most of the FAACOs in BAOR con-
gregated in Detmold along with some of
our own unit personnel to discuss pro-
cedures in the aviation world.
This was followed in the evening by
a dinner held in the Sergeants Mess 71 Accommodation Work-
shop when we were pleased to. welcome Brigadier Skinner and
t:
01 Ord (Air) Lieutenant Colonel Mars den as our guests.
'•his was a very successful get-together and from the letters of
praise WO I Beaton has received, it would appear that everyone
enjoyed themselves.
The winning team with the Dove Trophy.
Most unit personnel have managed to get some leave in
and on the courses front, Lance Corporals Beverley, Bellamy-
Wood and Privates Picot and Adams acquitted themselves very
well on the RAF Supply Controllers course. Corporal Cass
also managed to fox the instructors on his RPC1 course and
was awarded his certificate.
The unit entered a shooting team in the RAOC BAOR
shoot in an attempt to retain the Stores Section Trophy which
we won last year. Although this was not to be, the members
of the team acquitted themselves very well, despite the OC
admonishing Sergeant Welsh for having his rifle sights twisted.
'A good soldier should always check his sights*' Pretty good
until his own pistol sight fell off completely!
The good fairies have been on the go and one morning
Corporals Morrall and Green and Lance Corporals Legge
•:md Bell amy-Wood found new rank badges under their pillows.
Congratulations to them all.
We have receipted into the unit Lance Corporal Yardley,
Privates. Goddard, Joyce and Williams.
AVIATION
(SUPPLIES).
The Headquarters have moved to
plusher surroundings within Ripon Barracks, and what fun we
had moving all the furniture across in torrential rain.
Corporal Bowser has returned from 3 BAD having success-
fully completed his RPC I course.
The S02 Aviation (Supplies) has been flitting around
BAOR on various exercises and is now back in the office for a
short spell before going off to Norway. On his return from
Norway he will be changing his beret for a real one (delete
aircraft insert food).
Headquarters Scotland
NEXT month sees a number of changes
with Major Bickneil and Major Roynon-
Jones moving on to pastures new. Their
replacements are Major Schreuder and
Major Powell
Lieutenant Lovat Brownlee is also to
join us for a short spell prior to leaving
the Army. He is to be attached to Head-
quarters Lowlands to assist in running
the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
•fa
We were pleased to welcome Major
Gary Miller United States Army, who
came up for a 'rest * from DSCS to play
some golf and do some fishing; very successful tool as he
retrieved a one pounder Sea Trout in fifteen minutes flat from
the River Almond. A feat which a previous scribe to THE
GAZETTE never achieved in a Three Year Tour at Headquarters
Scotland.
In G Branch W 2 Coe has taken over from WOl Johnson
as Superintending Clerk.
In the Recruiting and Liaison Staff, Lieutenant Colonel
Ian Lauder takes over a vacant Retired Officers Post,
His
arrival brings our Corps representation in Headquarters Scot-
land up to soccer team dimensions.
STORES SECTION RA RANGE HEBRIDES
MEDIC was the cry of the month. Corporal Trent found him-
self in Daliburgh Hospital minus his appendix, and Lance
Corporal J arm an decided that a broken foot was preferred,
and so hopped off on leave. His limp rather upset his fiancee!
With Private Dewar on leave our two senior supply clerks
Staff Sergeant Robinson and Sergeant Coom were seen feverishly
scratching their heads in an inane attempt to recall supercession
codes and the number of devious facets to the DPPC card. The
pile of DPPCs eventually made a fine foot rest for Lance
Corporal Jarman on his return from leave.
BFT training is in the air, and Lance Corporal Pickup
can be seen flashing round the circuit, the sun glinting from
his receding brow. Not to be outdone our new Senior Supply
Specialist Staff Sergeant Bob Chick decided to train every morn-
ing, slipped, tore a tendon and now hobbles to work, sorry about
the accident Bob but here's hoping that you, and Mary enjoy
your tour in Benbecula, and that M and RO keep their promise
by following with Hong Kong, it's the next one on the list;
Hebrides, Hong Kong. Get it?
Captain Slade having returned from the terrors of the OOs
course is now a firm believer in maximising the cube, what-
ever that is, and is out regularly, training for his Commando
course; twelve mile run is nothing to him now, except an awfully
long way with no pubs in between.
Now onto the infrequent but nevertheless sad part of this
months notes, we say a fond farewell to W 2 John Robson his
wife Sylvia, Staff Sergeant Ken Ray and wife Nancy who both
go to Hong Kong, (don't forget the shirts!) and wish them all
the best and hope that they enjoy their tour—as if they couldn't
after the Hebrides,
PS. We haven't forgotten Corporal Byrne, so long as St
Kilda's there so will Corporal Byrne.
SATO RA RANGE
HEBRIDES
WITH the plans going ahead to set up FAD St Kilda Major
Gordon has been paying continual visits to the island. At the
present time we understand he is the only member of the SATO
staff to volunteer for the posting.
Back on the big island we are all thinking Lance as the
annual camp gets into full swing. The practicing unit gave us
the usual chat on the equipment and hope Sergeant Dave Oakley
will not put any of their vehicles in workshops like last year.
The SATO Light Air Defence Detachment have been busy
classifying on the .50 Browning. Fine, experienced shooting gave
the expected results, once we learned how to use the thing.
Sergeant Bob Charlton has returned from Portsmouth
after successfully completing his competent persons course, al-
