Transcription Canada, Sergeant Sieve Smith came in June with his mind
made up to go out into the current labour market even before
he had sampled the refreshing air of Ludgershall. We also wish
Staff Sergeant Arthur Seymour all the best on his work study
practitioners course. St aft Sergeant Ralph Jackson should have
his feet under the table by now somewhere in Verden and his
relief here in Ludgershall, Sergeant Pat Pierce, is doing his
best to maintain the image of fitness which now goes with the
Chief Clerk's job.
Petroleum Centre
IT is with deep regret that we learnt of the
recent deaths of Mr Charlie Lawrence and
Mr Mick Benson. Charlie for many years
worked as a Clerical Officer in the School
of Petroleum until his retirement in 1979.
He will be remembered by many
Petroleum operators and staff instructors
to whom he gave stalwart service. Mick
Benson who died after a long illness was
employed in the Officers Mess for the
past fourteen years as a steward. He too will be well remembered
for his service to the many officers of the Corps who have served
here or passed through on courses.
It is on a happier note that we record the retirement of Mr
Bob Sykes. He was given an excellent send off. After serving
here for nineteen years he was finally towed from the Depot in
style. Petroleum, operators world wide contributed to his fare-
well gift, a silver salver presented by WOl Mick Dodwell, He
also received a painting depicting his long career by Mr Les
Quaintance and a West Moors sweat shirt presented by Private
Stefan Cason. Finally Second Lieutenant Diane Couch presented
a bouquet to Mrs Sykes. A * Workmate' was also delivered to
his house to keep him busy in retirement. A fitting farewell
to a great character and personal friend to many Petroleum
Operators who have passed through during the years.
The OLPC have been away on attachment to BPA learning
the ins and outs of the oil pipeline organisation in East Anglia.
We sent along Captain Hewitt, Sergeant Cannings and Corporal
Brumby just to ensure the pipeline stayed where it was originally
placed! The exercise was a great success and many lessons were
learned. Our thanks to 4 Petroleum Depot for the loan of four
SNCOs who helped to ensure the smooth-running of the exercise.
Congratulations to our brand new sailing team of Staff
Sergeant Keith Selby, Sergeant Geordie Mould, Corporals Yotto
Rayner and Neil Willis they came seventh in the Corps Offshore
regatta on their first time out.
We also congratulate Sergeant Ray McMenamin on his win-
ning the Captains Cup for the net score over thirty six holes in
the RAOC Spring Golf Meeting at Blackmoor and Corporals Neil
Willis and Martin Brumby on winning the Fern down and District
Darts doubles championship.
The Sergeants Mess recently dined out W 2 Bob Mc-
Naught on his retirement from the service. Bob first joined
the Army in 1951 in the RASC as a National Serviceman and
after a break re-enlisted as a regular in 1961. He has seen
service in the Far East, Middle East, Denmark, BAOR and UK.
We also say farewell to Sergeant Charlie Coffills on posting and
welcome Corporal Lee Kennedy and family to West Moors,
All joking and rude remarks aside congratulations to all -
who took part and many thanks from the correspondent who is
on the lookout for subject matter.
To the members of the senior group who have completed
their trade training we wish the best of luck in their future
endeavours. You may not be sad to be leaving Chepstow but
look on the bright side, to do the staff here a favour is no bad
thing.
The College * Open D a y ' and ' F e t e ' has come and gone
but this event should not be allowed to go by unmentioned.
The idea of a game where an unwitting member of the public
could, for the cost of a few pence, destroy a polystyrene tank was
excellent. Bells and batteries were assembled onto the stall, a
suitable contact board was made, so the unwitting visitor could
make a choice of some two hundred and eighty terminals. Of
these nine were linked to the tanks and two hundred and seventy
one were linked to a bell. We offer congratulations to the young
boy who destroyed nine tanks at one go and a simple set of
circuit diagrams to Staff Sergeant Roy Whitford.
Staff Sergeant Dave Heath is busily preparing to hand over
to his successor. We hope that when this new chap gets here he
wants lots of information on applying for passports, filling in of
application forms for married quarters and German road maps.
If our new man is not into this sort of thing I suggest he arrange
a five minute interview with Dave in the near future.
On a more serious note the staff would like to congratulate
the apprentices of the Senior Group who recently achieved a first
by presenting to an invited audience their course projects.
Information they gleaned from much research was put „•
across in the requisite form along with many visual aids which
showed that they do have real potential. It was good to see
Colonel Forshaw, who represented DLSA, It must have made a
change for someone from the Mecca of the ammunition world
to sit and be ' told ' by those who are only just on the threshold
of gaining entry. How fitting that a former Senior Instructor
of the department should return as the principal guest to the first
of these occasions. Those members of the Senior Group who
have successfully completed their course have reason to feel
doubly proud.
The junior term have been very successful in the Apprentice
Promotions: congratulations to Apprentice Corporals Joy and
Snowden as well as Apprentice Lance Corporals Carr, Dreghorn,
Howard and Lane.

We are very proud of the
successes gained in the Travers Clarke
Athletics meeting though we suspect the
motives of Apprentice Sergeant Goddard
who failed to win the pole-vault again.
The victor in this event was Captain Paul
H e n w o o d w i t h A p p r e n t i c e Sergeant
Goddard, last years winner in second
place, surely this is nothing to do with the
final trade tests which the senior term had
just taken.
Apprentice Tradesman Lee was
obviously in a silver grabbing mood. Not
only did he win the one hundred and ten metres hurdles but
he also received the Junior Soldiers Cup.
The bold Captain was also in a ' throwing mood * but there
are no cups for third place in the javelin. Never mind Sir, you
can have your coffee out of a beaker.
