Transcription Royal Military College of Science Shrivenham
DESPITE the departure of the 19&M ATOs
Course lo Kineton on 16th June, Shrivenham
and The Royal Oak Watchfield continue to
flourish (although, in truth, the ' Oak's'
profits have taken a dip!). The ATOs course
went out in style, holding a mediaeval ban-
quet in ' The Woodman ' Fernham. Come to
think of it, they also had a farewell party in
The Royal Oak and in the
! Despite
this they did work hard as well as playing
hard whilst at the College and entered fully
into College life. Their liveliness, spirit
and pleasantness did the Corps image proud and we wish them
continued success at Kineton and beyond,
On 10th July, DGOS and Mrs Brown visited the College to
attend the Senior Degree Course's Graduation Day. The Corps
had four graduands, Lieutenants Russell Abson, Josh Carins,
Willi Hurst and Chris Owen. Chris Owen covered himself with
glory by obtaining a very good degree and by winning a
College Prize (the 'ShapIantT Prize for submitting the best
project) as well as the RAOC Prize. All four departed during the
following weekend to Chi 1 well, Munster T Fallingbostel and
Plymouth (a brainy 'bootie*?) respectively. We hope the real
world will not come as too much of a shock to them all after
three full years in l Akademia, In fact, all Corps degree students
passed their annual exams and so progress on to another year.
Three of the second year degree students, Lieutenants Chris
Walker, Frank Perks and Gary Saunders are spending the
summer vacation (as well as grants from the Corps and the
School of Ordnance) walking the Grand Canyon, Arizona. We
look forward to a lengthy article in the Corps GAZETTE describing
their adventures! Even so, it is still somewhat extreme evasive
action by Chris Walker to avoid the teething problems of the
new Walker baby who arrived in April; belated congratulations.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Ian Sturges has decided to spend his
summer with DSCS, despite being told that he should do some-
thing active during the break. The ' first years ' are doing their
unit attachments, Iain Brant with the Commandos, Paul Dyer
at BATUS, and Tony Noakes building a road around Middles-
borough (any motorway cracks that appear in the future, and
we will know who to blame!)
On the Army Staff Course Division I, John Vickers has now
taken up cricket after his star performances as the College's 1st
XI goalkeeper during the winter. He may just be able to do a bit
of studying sometime. On Division II, Major Tony Laceby and
Major Tug Wilson continue to add tone to an otherwise rather
vulgar lot. Tony managed, by fluke, to get four DS wickets
for eighteen runs in the Inter College cricket final on 1st July,
so helping Division II to a fortunate win against the Senior
Common Room.
His study of the ballistic behaviour of
armour piercing shot is obviously having some benefit. It is
rumoured that the Corps is represented by two officers on the
Design of Information Systems Course. Major David Warnes
and Major Andrew Simpson were last seen in May. Any one
finding them please return to
(Actually the golf course
seems deserted since Andrew went missing).
Lieutenant Colonel David Hourahane continues to be seen
around the College (he says he is writing the * Hourahane
Report' on ATO training), but he is hoping no doubt that
AG9 will eventually give in, and post him here permanently.
Lieutenant Colonel Roger Dace (DS Ammo 2) has gone on a
' hang gliding * course because all DS Ammos should be so
trained in order to instruct ATO Courses properly. Lieutenant
Colonel Kevin Goad (DS Ammo 1) having endured a round trip
from Shrivenham to Glascoed to Leeds and back with twenty
nine ASC Division I students on a twenty six seater green 1956
vintage RCT bus has been looking for W 2 Heads the Military
Divisions Secretariat Chief Clerk who arranged the transport
Lieutenant Colonel Bill Bewley (DS ADP 2) has programmed
the RAOC Grey Book onto the College computer together with
Officers * form' and can now tell who will be DGOS in the year
2011. W 2 Burton, the SAT, continues to run the stables and
occasionally lecture on pyrotechnics, and WOl Bell continues to
keep the Quartermaster (a Gunner) in check. Finally, Am-
munition Branch's W02 (Sergeant Major Instructor of Gunnery
no less) Trembath RA leaves the College for Ho line in July.
Despite being a member of the Royal Regiment he is not a bad
sort of chap really, and to acknowledge this (and to ensure that
he buys a copy of the RAOC GAZETTE) he was presented with a
wall plaque making him an honorary ATO to mark his two,
glorious-for-him years, in our (RAOC) midst.
DCOS with RAOC Craduands and members of RMCS Directing
Staff at Shrivenham.
The Officers are (from left to right)
Lieutenant Colonel Dace {DS Ammo 2), Lieutenant Colonel
Bewley (DS ADP 2 ) t Lieutenant Owen, Lieutenant Carins, DGOS, -
Lieutenant Hurst, Lieutenant Abson, Lieutenant Colonel Goad
(DS Ammo I ) , Lieutenant Colonel Hourahane (Ex DS Ammo 2).
ASSOCIATION
NEWS
Derby
THERE are a number of Ex Service Regimental Associations
in Derby and it is hoped to form a successful branch of the
Association. There are unlimited facilities available in the form
of a hail-cum-meeting place, offering bar and snacks, music and
a convivial atmosphere where either RAOC Association Members
or potential members, can meet. There is no hard work attached
to becoming a member of the Association* simply contact: Ron
Brown, 42, Underhill Close. Derby, by letter please, in the first
instance. Early indications are, that an Association Branch can
be formed in the near future.
Obviously an Executive Committee needs to be formed. But
being a office holder can be fun, if the Association Branch is
formed on the right lines in the first place. A Secretary has
been found who is capable and is interested in the job.
Ideas to date: Meet once a month? Game Evenings, Disco/
Dances, Outings. You name it, and it can be arranged.
There's no problem about drinking and driving. The bus
facilities are excellent in Derby, and cover the whole of the
City and surrounding Districts.
Please write to the address given indicating past Service
particulars.
