Headquarters BAOR
Headquarters Northern Army Group
THE Combined Syndicate One Team had
an outstanding victory in the Northag
swimming gala. The team was gallantly
led by our Gl Belgian colleague Cadet
Richard de Kieermaeker who outsmarted
all the opposition,
Some syndicate members entered the
1981 Rheindahlen Marches (forty kilometre
event) partly as training for the impending
cross-country competition.
Six runners
started but after the first ten kilometres
were well spread out as it was a hot day
and very hard on the feet. Our better
successes were W 2 Barry Quigley four
hours and W02 Doug Boshier and Staff
Sergeant Mike Blair four and a half hours.
No farewells this month, but we transferred Private John
Powney for training, so welcome to Corporal Rich Ritchie from
Northern Ireland and Lance Corporal Jim Currie (yes another
Currie) from Cyprus.
Corporal George Grant has returned from UK leave and his
•rst job was to make out another pass—he'll be lucky.
The depleted ranks of G2 Division are being ruled by the
iron Hist and wobbly contours of Corporal Williams, the stand-
in (I'm only learning) Chief Clerk, as the real Chief is away on
hard earned leave (creep-creep).
Lance Corporals Bill Currie and Dick Chisholm are heard
complaining of the sudden but expected influx of work, but all
is forgotten at five pm as they both happily wander h o m e -
Bill Currie to his new flat already.
We say goodbye to Bill and Dick next week as they go on
;
<PC2 and leave respectively.
Find out next month if:—Bill has passed his course or is it
ill a skive: has Steve handed the seat back to Chief, or was it all
too much for him; and finally has Dick managed to stay off
the weed?
G3 are far too busy watching Corporal Dave Wood who
ieems to be the only one that doesn't know the ACOS is away.
He is most passionately typing away, sheet after sheet of update
to a document that we must not mention, all this on the electric
typewriter belonging to the Super Clerk that he managed to
spirit away from Major H even after all his SOs had failed.
Watch out though Dave when Super is back. Major (oops, I
nearly forgot) was himself seen typing last week so we are all
wondering, who is for; the chop, promotion, an award, or one
of those postings! ?
Work within HSC has been quiet over this reporting period
due to staff members of the Headquarters being on their summer
leave.
Corporal Stuart Macdonald's wife Anne recently gave birth
to a boy and they have named him Christopher—now for the
sleepless nights. At the time of these notes Stuart is poring
over the books for his EPC examination. During his visits to the
office for his mail he informs us that he has passed the mock
;xams so best wishes on the finals.
New arrivals are Major Denis Bell our new Headquarters
Supply Officer, late of Bicester and our new Commander, Colonel
Ian MennelU late Royal Regiment of Wales from York, we
wish them and their families, a happy tour in Northag.
EPS are really up against it work-wise and we didn't even
dare to ask for news. Perhaps they will do it next time.
REMEMBER THE DEADLINE FOR COPY IS THE
28th OF THE MONTH AT DEEPCUT
EX members of Rheindahlen Garrison will
remember the annual Rheindahlen Allied
Marches. This year the temperature for the
marchers was in the eighties. The Directorate
learn for the forty kilometres march was Major
Dave Langstaff, WOl Paul Sowerby, W02 Paul
Collins and Staff Sergeant Danny Martell. Also
entering as individuals were Major Rod Jennings
who did the fifteen kilometres, accompanying
his two daughters, and Conductor Bob Suthren
who " ran the fifteen kilometres course. W 2 John Gibson.
(Chief Clerk Gl) took the 1st Rheindahlen Cub Scout Pack
around the thirty kilometre course—well done ladsl
At the annual Rheindahlen Inter Church Senate Fete Con-
ductor Bob Suthren and his wife, assisted by Lieutenant Colonel
Mike Mathams, Major Geoff Scott and Major Roger Attrill, W02
Frank Fallon, Staff Sergeant Charlie Hunter, Martin Fallon and
Colin Hunter ran the balloon stall and raised nearly £100 for
a total of seven hundred and forty six balloons sold. The balloon
stall has been run annually by Equipment and Supply Manage-
ment (S Man 2) and this will be Conductor Bob Suthren's last
fete before going to DSM(A) Bicester later this year. Thanks go
to Bob and his wife Joan for the organisation and effort that they
have put in, not only to this years record breaking sales (it must
have been a combination of helium gas and greasy siring) but *
also for the years before when they have been just as successful.
This year Org and Plans Branch was tasked with running the
Book Stall. Much work by both staff of the branch and wives
throughout the Directorate was carried out in the sorting, pricing
and selling more than two thousand books. The afternoon was
most successful, reaping a princely sum of £300 for the various
chanties. It proved to be a most successful venture and it would
be impossible to list all the names of helpers, sellers and
organisers in this project. However, sincere thanks and our
appreciation are passed to all those involved.
On the sporting front there has been quite a bit of activity
within the G4 (old ' Q * Services) competition. To date the record
for the Directorate is as follows: Cricket, hammered, three
games to nil; Swimming, much better, second only to Transport!
Hockey, even better, it's an all Supply final on 2Sth July between
Supply A and B teams—results next month.
The WOs and Sergeants of the JHQ celebrated at the Garrison
Sergeants Mess with their Summer Ball. A good time was had by
all—especially those who stayed for the Champagne breakfast!
W 2 John Gibson and Sergeant John Hurley entered the
sixth BAOR tenpin bowling championships at Dusseldorf, The
Johns together came second in the doubles and team event.
John Gibson also came fourth in the singles and second in the
Masters competition even, after spending all night at the Mess
Ball on Saturday night/Sunday morning!
Coming and goings in the Directorate this month are as
follows: Major Mike Cutchey (Rations) is replaced by Major
David Clare; Staff Sergeant Danny Martell (Chief Clerk Com-
bat) has left us after five years in Rheindahlen for York. We
welcome Staff Sergeant *Art' Matthews as the long awaited
replacement for Staff Sergeant Bob Barr, Corporal Dave Harris
has left us and is replaced by Corporal Charlie Watts. Lance
Corporal Alan Brash is off to Cyprus for six months before
joining one of the Division. Hello to Private ' S h e p ' Shepherd
the new Registry clerk—he has come all the way from Legal!
From the Staff branches: W 2 Clive Travers is off to MOD,
DM (A), He is replaced by W 2 Steve Kinsey who moved
downstairs from G 1 / G 4 / G 5 Plans, who is, in turn replaced by
Staff Sergeant John from Headquarters 1 (BR) Corps. Wel-
come to Sergeant L J i m ' Hawkins who has the dubious pleasure
of working in G3 Staff Duties.
We are sad to report that both Staff Sergeants John Brewer
and Ted Deacon from G l have been sent back to UK for
medical treatment; we wish them both well and hope they will
have a speedy return to the fold.
