STATUE OF LORD
MOUNTBATTEN
A STATUE of Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten of Burma
is to be erected at the Horse Guards Parade looking towards the
Old Admiralty.
The project will cost about £100,000, including a design
: petition among leading sculptors and a fund for maintenance.
i^.e costs are to be met from public subscriptions with any sur-
plus going to the Mountbatten Trust for assisting the Handi-
capped and the United World Colleges.
Lord Mountbatten's statue will not be far from the only
other full length statues of admirals in central London—
Nelson in Trafalgar Square and Raleigh outside the Ministry of
Defence. Appropriately, since Earl Mountbatten was the last
Viceroy of India, the statue will also be quite close to that of
I.Td Give of India, The site chosen is on the grass on the
wning Street steps side of Horse Guards Parade, The statue
i show Lord Mountbatten in naval uniform.
Lord Mountbatten is remembered for his long career in
the Royal Navy, especially commanding a destroyer flotilla early
in World War II, his contribution to final victory as Chief-of-
Combined Operations and later Supreme Allied Commander in
South East Asia, his services as First Sea Lord and then Chief of
the Defence Staff and his statesmanship as the last Viceroy on
India. He was one of the most respected figures of recent
times in Britain and b e y o n d and it is expected that there will
b very many donations to the statue fund.
All donations will be acknowledged. They should be sent
Rear Admiral L. W. Townsend. CBE, Mountbatten Statue
