Transcription he leave season is upon us. Colonel David Porter has
his MS crystal ball down to the South West, to continue
usirigs by the sea. His PA confirms that the rest of the
u ment which he used whilst in AG9 (pins, ballpoint red
n,\iiopake and modelling wax) is also missing from his desk.
san while, Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Smith has been
vigating his way along ihe Caledonian Canal, terrorising local
h life en route. In reality it had little to fear. He has
;>ugh given a new lease of life to the expression * Hello Sailor. 1
is used sparingly however since he has picked up the well
own Scottish greeting " See you outside Jimmy/* The accent
II leaves a little to be desired. Happily, the Scots were
rired the sight of him in a kilt, A rush to join the Scottish
i: ^nalists was a threatened reprisal.
vtajor John Downing, following his policy of continual inv
o^'fneni. has taken leave for a week, vigorously to pursue his
pen University Degree Course. The rest of us found it easier
remain at work.
Finally, the Vehicle Division civilian cricket team beat its
ilitary counterpart in an ostensibly fun match. A manage-
ent objective for 1981 is to find something at which to beat
,e civilians. In support of this, a military dwile Honking team
at a secret training camp, somewhere in Nottinghamshire.

Training Centre
HEY didn't get all of us! (Readers of July's GAZETTE will know
: the recent MOD ' Mafia Contract * for IE(A)*s total destruction
f the Training Centre). But we have certainly been shaken!
ther units within the Centre will probably report on their
isualties but to us in the Headquarters our list is as follows.
iur Supt Clerk post is downgraded to W02, only seven weeks
fter Bob le Vaillant's arrival (but nobody has seen him crying
y, } ). Chief Clerk AQ has been downgraded from Sergeant to
loral but with an Embassy post in the pipeline Dave French
r. too worried! The G CorporaPs post has been annotated
may be W R A C ' and the Post NCOs * will be WRAC* Appoint-
lents have been made at the Cambridge Military Hospital for
o(h John Legg and Steve Geary to- have the necessary
perations!
Remaining untouched is the G Branch Sergeant—no longer
Chief Clerk as he hasn't got any Staff, Kevin (" I wish I'd gone
ver to the Chinese when I had the chance ") Mills. Other cuts
i our empire are one post in TSAB and two in Repra. So, many
• is will soon be on the move,
We welcome Major Desmond Townsend (GS02) and Major
wit Little (S02 AQ) and wish them every happiness at Black-
own. Farewell to Major Chris Brightman and Major Keith
dentzel on their postings to 1 (BR) Corps and Headquarters
iouth East District respectively. Our Commander, Brigadier
liornton, retires in October. We say farewell and thank you
tow, but will report on his departure next month.
Sergeant Mick Binks hates to let a month go by without
being mentioned. He finally broke the four minute barrier for the
fifteen hundred metres when he ran for the Army againsL Hamp-
shire and Surrey. His lime of 3.54.2 minutes earned him his
Combined Service Colours for athletics.
Later he ran for
Combined Services against Southern Counties but he is not
making the result public.
The August recess is now on us and the newly installed
one armed bandit, courtesy of Captain Tony Gallagher, is starving
from lack of money. However, our cleaners, Nita Hazeldine,
Marion Archibald, Trudy Longstaff and Lyn Beck are reviving
it temporarily.
We say " Bon Voyage " to Sergeant Dave Hewson who is
on his way to Osnabruck. We wish both him and his new bride
the very best for the future. We welcome in his place Sergeant
Sid Rumble who, believe it or not, is not a sportsman.
CENTRAL VOLUNTEER
HEADQUARTERS
AFTER a go-no-go confrontation with the RAF at Brize Norton
the Commander, Colonel John Gregan and his crew eventually
took off for the USA where they boarded the Corps yacht
4
Thunderer' and sailed her on the first leg of the voyage back
to England, We understand that a great time was had by all—
though this had nothing to do with the sailing!
With the majority of staff on block leave it has been fairly
peaceful this month, but we are well aware that it is only the
lull before the storm when it will all start to happen again next
month. Preparations are already well in hand for Exercise
Amber Express and Exercise Rising Phoenix which involve
several of our Sponsored TA Units.
Major Alan Taylor has left us and will soon be telling the
DS at Staff College, Camberley, how it should be done. We
welcome in his place Major Richard Conway-Hyde from the
Food Technology Course, and hope he will enjoy his stay
with us,
APPRENTICES COLLEGE
'A' COMPANY.
Now nearing the end of summer term, 'A'
Company's recruit platoons are both settling in to normal
College routine. They have experienced their first Battle Camps
—a severe shock to some systems, particularly when they found
how much weight they had to carry simply to survive for two
nights in the field. Fitness training is also taking on more sig-

sf achievement at a farewell buffet lunch in the School Mess.
Colonel Joseph Volpe and his assistant Major Ira Orr
from the US Quartermasters School, Fort Lee, Virginia were
welcome visitors earlier in the month. A very compact pro-
gramme was included in the short time of their visit, in
v
h-ch it was discovered that the Chief Clerk, W 2 Bob Connelly
