THE
ARMY
GOLF
CHAMFIONSHIP
THIS year's Army Golf Meeting held at the Royal Birkdale
E.J Hillside courses was very successful from a RAOC view-
point. We provided for the second year running the Army
Champion and were winners of the Egypt Cup.
Corporal Iain Gray RAOC proved to be an outstanding
successor to Major Ron Rush, last year's champion, lain
qualified easily in the thirty six hole stroke play, and in the
match play stage was only once taken beyond the fourteenth
hole in his four matches, this by Major John Stephenson in the
semi-finals. In the final Iain started hesitantly against Lieutenant
Martin Allen and was two down after three holes. However,
ho soon fought back and a glorious birdie four at the sixth was
possibly the turning point. In the end he ran out the winner
fr.-e and four

Corporal lain Cray—Army Champion.
In the Egypt Cup which is for B teams of major Corps/
Regiments and A teams of minor Corps; RAOC were represented
by Captain Mick Priestley. Captain Alan Hopper, Major Sandy
Spencer (Retd), Lieutenant Colonel Dudley Upton and the Corps
Captain of Golf, Colonel Ozzie Logan, A bye in the first
r :nd was followed by a comfortable win in the second round
' -r the Royal Signals B team. The RADC A team provided
strong opposition in the semi-finals which we won rather more
easily than expected. This brought us against the Sapper B
team whose combined handicaps were fourteen strokes better
than the Corps side. It was therefore a notable achievement
to beat them by two holes playing level. In every sense it was
a team effort and all are heartily congratulated.

GOLF
IN
BAOR
IN perfect golfing weather sixty four golfers set out to do
battle with the Bruggen course over two days to win the superb
trophies and prizes of the RAOC BAOR Golfing Society Spring
Meeting 1978.
Some excellent golf was played though at other times the
fairways stayed empty while determined golfers pursued their
perilous paths to the greens constructing them as they went.
On the first day WOl John Kearney (3 BAPD) newly pro-
moted and relishing his recent posting to the nearest RAOC
Unit to Bruggen, shot a seventy six to win the Scratch com-
petition by three strokes. This is the third consecutive year he
has had the best scratch score in this competition. In 1976 he*
lost the cup after count back and in 1977 he won it outright.
The Handicap competition was won by Mr Bill Shadwell
(SSD Viersen) with a score that caused his handicap to start
tumbling and the afternoon Stableford went to Staff Sergeant
Fred Duffy (ICP) who rounded up a good day after being placed
second in both the morning competitions.
The Bogey competition on the second day saw some record
scores—unfortunately it was the redoubtable Colonel Bogey
who did the scoring. This time W02 Jim Bowen (Ord Depot
Antwerp) came to the fore by squaring his game after having
come second in the previous day's Stableford.
W02 John
Burgess (154 FAD) was one down for second place.
The afternoon Foursome Stableford brought out a new
crop of winners with Major Alan Butterworth (VSD Moenchen-
gladbach) and Mr (ex-Conductor) Pat O'Brien (ASU Moenchen-
gladbach) winning and Captain Jim Bridle (HQ 15 COD) and
WOl Andy Kane RCT (Freight Services 15 COD) coming second.
The Hidden Holes competition was won by Staff Sergeant
Ian Benson (89 Supply Depot) and Staff Sergeant Brian Holding
(1 Corps Troops Ordnance Company).
The Bateson Trophy for the champion RAOC Unit—an
overall competition played over both days—was contested by
nine teams and won for the third time in its three year existence
by SSD Viersen (Staff Sergeant Duffy, Staff Sergeant Murray,
WOl Kane and Captain Bridle).
Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Young, the Chairman of the
Society thanked the Club for the excellent facilities provided
and the Secretary, Captain Jim Bridle and his helpers WOl
Pete Emerton and Sergeant Frank Smith, for their organisation
and the smooth running of a most enjoyable meeting.
Brigadier Crawley had his hands full—though only briefly—
presenting the prizes. For example, Fred Duffy took away
the Chatfield Plate and the Bateson Trophy for a year, two small
trophies commemorating those victories and four prizes reward-
ing his two firsts and two seconds. He has only two months to
do in Germany and has been cut to eight anyway—so the rest
of us have a chance now,
Twenty seven golfers of IS Composite Ordnance Depot—
from Viersen, Moenchengladbach, Dulmen and Hamm gathered
at Bruggen for their Spring meeting. In ideal weather con-
dition the morning round commenced with every golfer with a
handicap of twenty two or better partnering one with a larger
handicap in a four-ball, better-ball Stableford competition.
