STAFF
CLERKS
out
,. HElTO
there!", Staff Sergeant Ralph Jackson G I / G 4
nniich here. As the Staff Clerk contribution to T H E G\ZETTU
|L L ,n 1st Armoured Division has. been occasional, I have been
LV.:.s! to keep you up-to-date with any noteworthy happenings
•onth, with contributions from my Chief Clerk, W 2
A
jit and the Chief Clerk of * G ' Branch Staff Sergeant
pl u l uadsden,
Being a new arrival, I would like to start by saying farewell
to my predecessor, Staff Sergeant (now WOZ) Roy Coe (Good
lack in your new rank Roy).
The most recent excitement in Verden was Summer Sales 81
—which clashed with Wimbledon (G EPS 1 (BR) Corps please
On this exercise the soldiers living accommodation
no te).
(Soldiers sleeps) was co-located with Soldiers scoffs and it was re-
nV.'.rkcd upon that Staff Sergeant Phil Gadsden had great difficulty
i ' mg in a shift between sleep, nosh and the centre court.
e still looking for the sadist who declared NBC red during
me tenth game of the fourth set of the men's final!
Another rare and exciting occasion in Verden was the
Headquarters sports afternoon during which the branch volley-
ball team continued the tradition of losing in the first round
of every inter-branch competition this year. However, some
three weeks later Corporal Dave Tressider more than atoned for
this setback by winning outright the Headquarters Engineer
Families Treasure Trail—a very rare honour At the time of
writing Corporal Tony Crawshaw is spending three weeks leave
ng Verden—it was to have been four weeks touring Europe
.,, .he inclement (some would say lousy) weather in the Mosel,
Vienna and Halifax has deterred him.
(Never mind Tony,
you need the rest with all that hair to carry round).
Much to the relief of many in Verden, Lance Corporal Steve
Turner departed to Munster—talk about out of the frying
pan
He has however, served his full sentence, without
remission and has qualified for the order of the ' triangled
tankard' (Some say that medals should be awarded for serving
three years here?).
Now on to the poor unfortunates who must have upset
' OC Records—the new arrivals. Firstly—Sergeant Bob Mays
w... G3 Branch, who burst in from Soest a couple of months ago
and has totally upset the Ops Officer by re-organising and re-
arranging everything in sight in the Ops world. Secondly, Corporal
Bob Shiels takes over from Corporal Bob Leat (who has gone
on promotion to SHAPE) as the Ops Corporal G I / G 4 . Lance
Corporal Gary Hughes moves up from RDC to G2/G3 and is in
the Int and Sy chair, a floor higher (moving up in the world).
Our congratulations go to Private Bob Roney and his wife
Laureen on the production of a baby girl—Nicola.
Lastly, and most definitely least, no article would be
: nplete without a mention of Private Dave Marshall; the pet
^•ffer (not the Oxford Dictionary meaning). This is only to say
he's going on leave in September and claims that it is his first
this year—the Chief of 4 G ' Branch says his leave plot does not
concur.
ORDNANCE
COMPANY
THE attentive reader will have deduced from last month's
jottings that we were about to relocate grounded stock on top
of Mount Everest. Common sense dictated that attempts should
first be made to reduce the size of the mountain (grounded stock
:' U is, not Everest) and a joint PC and A/Storehouse operation
> led to so much backloading that Viersen must be worried
a out where they can put it all. In the event, much hard
*ork by all hands and many MHE hours have succeeded in
moving half the stock. Keep at it lads!
With great regret, the unit Summer Camp was cancelled due
to a shortage of adventurous training equipment at Dulmen. On
the plus side, this has led to the planning of an expedition to
Corsica which might just have the edge on the Harz!
The athletics team put in fine efforts at the BAOR Cham-
pionships including many personal best performances. Despite
i experience at this level of competition, the team came seventh
! i behind 3 BAD.
A group of mummies from the Wives Club went to see
another group of mummies at the Tutenkhamen Exhibition in
Hamburg. Rumour has it that Corporal Harley also took them
on a tour of the docks and other areas in the PRI minibus.
The company had to say farewell to several notable
characters this month.
The Administrative Officer, Captain
Storey was posted to Bielefeld and Q Jones to Rheindahlen.
Privates Bacon and Lewis departed still owing the OC a beer for
fixing their postings.
Anyway, back to grounded slock. Anyone want to buy
two hundred Number Two Burners with no working insides—
going cheap?
STORES
PLATOON
1 ARMOURED
WORKSHOP
REME
LIKE the weather things are changing at Fallingbostel. Captain
Hurst has arrived from the educational ivory tower of RMCS
Shrivenham to take over from Second Lieutenant Ian Robertson-
Second Lieutenant Robertson after a short introductory course
into the Corps is the YO's course (after five months in the chair
at a Stores Platoon, rather a formality) moves up to 1st Armoured
Division Ordnance Company.
The Workshop had its open day this month which was a
great success. One of the highlights of the day was a Power
Pack change on a Leopard I battle tank by our Bundeswehr
counterparts; time Lwenty minutes. REME officers were heard
muttering * Makes you sick! 1
The other highlight was a water race between various
departments of the Workshop. The Stores Platoon were in a
commanding lead off the ' final bend, 1 when they were dis-
qualified on a mere technicality, but I suppose you can't fight a
fire with the water turned off!
Q Collins nipped in for a quick visit on his R and R, you
can't keep him away, although his wife, Margaret tried. We
welcome back from Ireland on a more permanent basis Lance
Corporal Gerry Madine and Private Jed Gosney.
The football team are still hard at it, with mixed results, a
narrow defeat by 1st Armoured Division Ordnance Company
was quickly followed by a win over 3 Queens LAD. Keep it
up lads we'll get that DOS cup soon.
Private Tiller has gone on leave to get married, con-
gratulations and best wishes from us all
For this special
occasion Tiller decided to have a facelift!
Finally with travel in mind we say goodbye to Corporal
Dirk Wilson and canoe, and also to Pat Pollard who worked in ^
our office. Good luck to you both on your new postings. We
also welcome Lance Corporal Robert Darling from 39 Regiment
RA.

HEADQUARTERS
RAOC
HAVING got over the monsoons and
Summer Sales we returned to camp to
And ourselves Redundant With the im-
pending move of the Headquarters back
to UK to become Headquarters 2nd In-
fan try Division, there is much speculation
about postings.
The rumour that there are two
vacancies for Sergeant Sup Clk in this
Headquarters is not true. Sergeants Al Dunn and Mick Haverty
are back from the School of Ordnance, having learnt how to
digress with the best of them.
Our D O W 2 W 2 Greg
Gregory has since been nominated for two courses in digressing,
one after the other, but feels that only one is required now,
especially with all the 4 pressure.'
Corporal Chris Dick complained that he never got a
mention, so keep on crawling and you might get one.
Congratulations go to Lance Corporal Bunn on his pro-
motion to Corporal and Private Bottomley on his promotion
to Lance Corporal.
Now to the Jns and Outs of the Headquarters. We have
said goodbye to FSO Bill Rogers and Mrs Rogers and hope
that their new post in Shrewsbury, brings them as much good
cheer as they have had in Lubbecke.
Major Jim Steele has left us on Exercise Long Look for six
months; the thought of having a Christmas in the middle of
summer I
We welcome Mr Adrian Orrey as our new FSO, and Staff
Sergeant Newman as Chief Clerk G Branch.
Finally we wish to welcome to the Corps A/Private Peter
Baker recently enlisted into the Apprentices College. Peter's
father is Sergeant Dave Baker OUT Sergeants Mess Manager, late
of 87 Supply Depot.
