the transport failed to make an RV and the enemy patrol
to walk back to their base, in the rain. Despite this every-
f looks forward to the chance of doing the same exercise
n next year.
W02 Bob Nimmons was also away taking part in the
negen Marches, which were duly completed. Although not
,ce, we felt it worth mentioning that they came second over
Well done.
In addition to this we have had Lance Corporals Heynes
Allen away with the Bath Unit in Italy, where they were
sorting Exercise Monte Bianco.
Finally we welcome Privates Brooks and Thomas to the
npany.
STORES SECTION
ARMOURED ENGINEER REGIMENT WORKSHOP
E historic moment finally arrived. After a sixteen month fight
* Q * Evans, the Stores Section took delivery of a hard
ned Hyster FLT! and to prove it to past members of this
rtion. look to the photograph where you will see, draped all
r it, Privates Chris Allen and Tom Harrison, at the controls
I Evans, in the front and left to right, Corporal Dennis
ith. Private Ted Edwards. Lance Corporal Jeff Phillipson,
nee Corporal Colin Cowling and Corporal Kev Rothwell.
ough you can't see much of the Hyster, it works beautifully!
Lance Corporal Phillipson returned to the fold recently
er successfully passing his basic driving course, and after buy-
j a VW Golf, disappeared in a cloud of dust towards Bracht
- his RPC2 Course.
Corporal Dennis Smith was also successful on his Hygiene
and Rodent Control Course and guarantees that the Workshop
is rodent free. The Unit Annual Adventure Training took place
in Bavaria at Sonthofen recently, where Lance Corporal Phillip-
son, along with Privates Allen, Harrison and Edwards, partook
in an enjoyable period of watermanship, hill climbing, canoeing
and Bavarian Beer drinking—the latter coming first in popularity,
especially for Private Allen who became barman for his stay-
On the Exercise front, our intrepid section members Corporal
Rothwell and Private Allen were ' out * for the first week of
crew training whilst Lance Corporal Phillipson and Private
Edwards ably replaced them for the second week. If all of
them are to be- believed, it was an extremely busy period. We
do however have our doubts 1 For Exercise Numidian Horse,
Corporal Rothwell and Private Harrison provided the * Midnight
Oil' and stores backup for the Workshop.
We say a fond farewell to Corporal Kev Rothwell who
leaves us on promotion. We say hello to Corporal Colin
Smith, we wish him and his wife Rosemary and their daughters
a happy tour.
One person who has not been mentioned so far is our one
and only driver (by trade) Lance Corporal Cowling, not due to
forgetfulness, but because we rarely see him these days due to
HGV driver training. Quote, " They are my wagons, I'll
instruct"
Composite Ordnance Depot Hong Kong
THE rainy season arrived this month and the wet weather pro-
gramme came into effect with the arrival of Tropical Storm
Lynn, the first this year. The No. 8 Signal remained hoisted
for twenty eight hours and forty five minutes of stultifying
boredom for the duty party—the longest period for seven years
we were casually informed. All in all it was a bit of a non
event—except for the lucky folk not on duty who had an en-
forced two day holiday.
More wet stuff flowed during the Unit Swimming Gala, an
extravaganza organised by Major Browning and Captain Munce,
Vehicle Group attached wipers to their goggles to win the team
event. The combined team of SSD, Workshops and Head-
quarters Staff came second overall with some fine individual per-
formances from Lieutenant Colonel Archer who remained above
water this time.
Congratulations also go to Lieutenant Colonel Archer for
the award of a British Forces Colours Tie for services to Sub
Aqua. Also to Major Browning on his selection for promotion.
Commiserations to Major Neill who still can't make him-
self understood in Cantonese to his bewildered Chinese Staff.
On the extra mural side the Junk continues to boost morale
as well as earn money for the rebuild of the Lantau Holiday
Chalet with which some readers may already be familiar. July
saw the completion of Phase 1 during which the Chalet grounds
were cleared (down to the sea), the building replumbed, rewired
and a proper kitchen and bathroom extension built. Phase 2
starts in October with the building of a separate living room on
the foundation slab many people will have used as a Bar-B-Q
site. Any donations will be gratefully received by our PRI!
Sad farewells went to: Staff Sergeant Andy Shoemaker,
W02 Harry Marie, Sergeants Brian Tomlin and Pete Ingham,
Corporal Stu Davies, Lance Corporal Charlie Fraser and families.
Helios to: Sergeant Pete Cooney, Corporal John Blount and
Lance Corporal R. J. Tillman and families. Michael Thomas
new born son of Corporal Dave and Gail Wilkinson with a wet
one.
Royal Brunei Malay Regiment
IN Brunei the fasting month is over and
we are now into the festivities of Hari
Raya (which is the * breaking' of the fast).
The Logistics Depot has almost returned to
normal after the many parties, mess
functions and Hari Raya house calls made
to our Malay friends. For the new mem-
bers and their families this was their first
experience of Hari Raya so that vast
quantities of orange juice and curry offered
at each house was something of a surprise
and delight.
Our intrepid SAT, WOl Graham Lightfoot took house
visiting more seriously than most when he ventured on a
hazardous journey to Kampong Ayer (Water Village). He was
lucky to survive the boat trip because of a combination of high
tides and low bridges. Afterwards, replete with curry and rice
All ours at last.
