This brings his tally of 'Pots 1 to five from
One last point on the motoring front. Major
t w.ive starts.
£>c*-k Hellings managed to talk the SSO into giving us seventeen
purging spaces outside the Unit These are now suitably adorned
with little red and blue signs in an attempt to discourage 'illegal'
parking by outsiders. Sadistic blocking of offenders is now an
everyday part of Inspectorate life.
Congratulations are due to WO I Colin Pearce on his
selection for promotion to substantive rank, to Sergeants Bob
Clay (Det) and Curly Thynne for their selection for promotion
to Staff Sergeant, and to Sergeant Pat Powell on his pro-
motion to that rank. Well done all. With Corporal Dave
Cotterill on his pre-ops course and then off to Northern Ireland
that leaves very few Corporals and under to do all the work!
To the fold this month we welcome our two new typists, Mrs
Joanne Maher and Miss Wendy Butler. Others on courses are
Staff Sergeant Cockburn on a German language course, (this
must be a fiddle when you can speak German as well as he
does) and W02 Don Newlands (Del) who is on a driving
course.
Rumours that the Detachment are in late hibernation are
unfounded and we promise more news in the near future.
Ordnance Depot Antwerp
IT is with profound sadness that the death is reported of Sergeant
Bob Miller. He died as a result of a traffic accident whilst on
duty in Germany, Bob was well known throughout the vehicle
world and will be missed by everyone serving with British Forces
in Antwerp who knew him. To his wife Shirley and his two
sons we offer our deepest sympathy.
The only two contributions I received this month concern
sport—as if that is all we do here I Anyone will tell you that the
work still goes on, and perhaps it is because everybody is too
busy here that I am short of contributions.
Thanks, however, must go to the Golf Club who always
seem to come up with something (bless you lads!) and this
month it is W02 Jim Bo wen (again) with his usual clutch of
prizes. We have news also of an improved handicap for
Sergeant Jim McNee. As a non-golfer, myself, I would have
thought that the smaller the number, the more one would wish
to keep quiet about it—but then I don't even spectate! Do I
hear cries of Philistine?
A second thank you goes to the hockey team the only
trouble there is that, being end of season, I have a digest of
what unsuspecting readers have been offered throughout the
winter months. WOl Les Cheetham would just like me to
remind everyone that they have really done quite well this
season—see last month's edition for visible proof.
Finally, and at risk of being labelled * gossip columnist/ I
would like to explode a myth about our RQMS, W02 Maxi
Duggan. He does not have green fingers; he does have all
chosen qualities one might expect in an experienced Warrant
Officer (I won't enlarge). The beautiful display of flowers
which appeared just prior to the recent visit of the QMG,
General Sir Patrick Howard Dobson, were not the result of end-
less hours of selfless toil in the Depot Glass House (!) but more
the result of numerous trips to the local supermarket to purchase
the everlasting plastic variety. Needs must, I suppose, but no
doubt our plastic tulips will nod respectfully from their concrete
beds at all the passing VIPs for generations to come.
In: WOl Alan Tarsnane, Sergeant Ray Kennard, Corporal
Dave Link and Private Gary Freeman.
Out: WOl Paul Anderson and Sergeant * Jock* Armstrong.
Planning and Workstudy Unit BAOR
APART from a very skilled, although punctured, drive to Spain
by Conductor John Alford, there have been very few movements
worthy of note. In the very near future however, SSM Mat
Hudson is due to leave the Unit lines, at last, on a trip to
Berlin. Captain John Print and SSM Sandy Bennett have
agreed, not even reluctantly, to act as escorts.
Promotions this month for the aforementioned Mat, Sergeant
John Smith our new photographer, whom we welcome with
family, and Corporal Terry Kennedy, all substantive—con-
gratulations.
Farewells to Sergeant Nobby Gaunt, to the wilds of Senne-
Jager and to Mrs Eileen White our typist, to the even wilder
depths of Kuwait. Another welcome to Mrs Rosemary Butlin
our new typist.
Conductor Steve Mayes has * putt' back some of the Unit's

recently, the other two golfers of the Unit have been keeping
quiet.
Major Ollive, the OC, decided to educate our 2IC, Captain
Print, with the rigours of Command again, by driving off for a
short holiday in Italy. Come back boss, all is forgiven—two
BFT runs per day are too much for anyone, even if we are
allowed tracksuits.
3 Base Ammunition and Petroleum Depot
AS stated in an earlier issue of THE GAZETTE, 3 BAPD's
contribution to HM The Queen's Silver Jubilee Appeal was
DM 1500. This amount was raised from the Officers and
Sergeants Mess cricket match, a uniformed organisations' disco,
the All Ranks Dance, PRI and the collection box.
The
Appeal Fund is now closed.
Sergeant 'Danny' Daniel recently fished various eliminating
matches and was selected for BAOR against RAFG. Sergeant
Daniel has advised me not to say any more—wonder what
the result was? ! Danny, give us a clue.
The end of another successful rugby season saw , the
Bracht Barbarians retain the Rhine Area Major Units* Cup
and the local Double Diamond League Championship. On
the way to the top, they lost only one of the ten games.
They were, however, less fortunate in the BAOR cup, being
trounced by the eventual Army Cup winners—the Duke of
Wellington's Regiment. Bracht also provided the bulk of the
RAOC (BAOR) team which won the Ellis Cup for the fifth
year. On the seven-a-side front, the Bracht *A' team regained
the Rhine Area Championship whilst the * B * side, having
been knocked out in the first round, went on to win the plate.
As far as is known, this is the first time any unit has won
both 'pots.' Bracht rugby is now the poorer for the departure
of Corporals Mick Jory and Bert Dovell whom we wish well
in their new posts.
The Fencing Club produced a three man team for the 2
Armoured Division Championships and brought home runners-
up trophies. The team consisted of Private Gavin Lucas
(Epee), Lance Corporal Kevin Adams (Foil) and Major Reggie
von Zugbach de Sugg (Sabre). Private Lee acted as team
coach.
The annual athletics ended in a win for SASO Department.
Notable individual winners were: Sergeant Alan Vanstone (eight
hundred metres and four hundred metres), Corporal Phil Ella
(javelin and long jump plus second in one hundred metres), Lance
Corporal Chris Christopher (hammer and discus) and last, but by
no means least, Lance Corporal Don Robertson (two hundred
metres, high jump and four by one hundred metres team race),
A team of MT strongmen, led by Sergeant Ken Avery, won the
tug-of-war convincingly, winning by two straight pulls each time
they took up the rope.
The Miss Bracht competition took place at Wortham Hall,
and the girls from Rheindahlen Garrison joined the Unit to
find their successful entrant who, together with Miss Bracht,
will go forward to the Miss BAOR final. Diddy David
