Transcription Hamilton from the BBC was unable to compere the show, so
Diddy David Clare (Planning Branch) stood in-—he is the shortest
in the Unit, The girls were seen first in day dresses, interviewed,
and then seen again in their evening dresses. The judges had a
, very difficult task in deciding which of the beautiful girls was
going to win. The result was Angela Dickson as Miss Bracht
with Lynne Busuttil second, and Rose Anne Warden third. Well
done all the girls who took part.
Some twenty six of our numbers have formed up as a
platoon for Guard Force duties in Northern Ireland later in
the year. Training in earnest has now begun and we will include
progress reports in further editions of THE GAZETTE.

STORES SUB-DEPOT VIERSEN
ON the 3rd May we held our traditional inter-departmental
athletics championships. This year we were joined by individuals
from 89 Supply Depot and Vehicle Sub-Depot, the latter now
sadly unable to field teams for major sporting events. The meet-
ing was held at VSDs stadium by kind permission of the CO
and thanks to the efforts of his staff.
As luck would have it the low cloud and damp, lifted by
lunch time to give us a splendid afternoons sunshine, the only
glimpse of the sun all that week.
Most ranks and quite a few families managed to get out
and enjoy a traditional sports day with all the usual events,
prizes, flags (beer) and un-accountably defective PA system (not
a major handicap as it transpired). Departments and com-
petitors fully entered into the spirit of things despite, perhaps,
because of!—a lack of depth in gladiators reflecting our diminish-
ing establishment.
Honours went to Captain Dexter and
Sergeant Spencer (sprints) Staff Sergeant McGibley of VSD
(eight hundred metres) Captain Byle and Corporal Masterson
Andrews (long distance) Corporal Crosby (high jump) Private
Cowen of VSD (long jump) Private Biesty (javelin) and RSM
Black (remaining field events). The old Soldiers Race went to
old faithfuls Major Mac Donald and Warrant Officer II Gore of
VSD, followed by returnee to the Moenchengladbach Stakes
Corporal and Mrs George Appleby with His Excellency the British
Ambassador to West Germany, Sir Oliver Wright, KCMG T DSC,
after the presentation of the British Empire Medal to Corporal
Appleby at Bonn.

Viersen Sports Day—Private Gooderham—second in the eight
hundred metres—receiving his prize from Mrs Pat Yeats, wife
of the Commanding Officer of SSD Viersen.
Congratulations to Conductor Peter Reed on being selected
to umpire at both the BAOR International Services hockey
festival and the BAOR six-a-side tournament at Paderborn, and
to Private Endel Weber who has been invited to umpire at this
year's Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
An enjoyable day was had by all those who attended an
all ranks families curry lunch organised by Staff Sergeant Eddie
Wilson, Lance Corporal Sandy Crawford and Private Alan
Woodruff, This was preceded by a soccer match twixt the
Sergeants Mess and Junior Ranks. The old and the bold taught
the youngsters a thing or two and whether it was fixed or not,
the RSM scored a goal, but received no hugs or kisses. Staff
Sergeant Jim Ord scored a couple, and in reply Privates Steve
Parrott and Alan Woodruff scored for the Junior Ranks. Deft
touches of skill were shown by the evergreen SSM George
Goodswen, who time and again mesmerised the Junior Ranks
defence. Still on the soccer scene, Captain Sider and Staff
Sergeant Wilson (the VSD's answer to Clough and Taylor) are
busily organising the Unit's annual seven-a-side tournament
The RSM has selected a Headquarters Team who would do
justice to any coming playing in the World Cup, and which
includes the CO playing in goal\
Congratulations to Corporal John Kirby who was selected
to compete in the nine hundred mile International Welsh Rally*
John was a driver in a two-man team, one of three entered by
the British Army Motoring Association and had his sights set
on a place after successes in the Army (BAOR) Land Rover
