Transcription COMMEMORATIVE
MEDALLIONS
TO mark the closure of Central Ordnance Depot Chilwell on
31st March 1982, the Commandant, Brigadier Berragan, has
authorised the production of a commemorative medallion. This
is to be in hot east pewter metaL approximately forty five milli-
metres in diameter. On the obverse side will be a facsimile of the
original Chetwynd Crest, which appeared on the brass 'tally*
discs that were issued to all employees of the National Shell
Filling Factory No. 6 Chilwell, during the period 1915 to
1913, when the factory was engaged in producing vast quantities
of explosive shells, mines, bombs etc for use by the Allies during
World War One. It also carries the legend v The VC Factory '
which was the unofficial title given to Chilwell after the l great
explosion 1 which took place on 1st July 1918 killing one
hundred and thirty four employees and injuring very many more.
The reverse side of the medallion shows the badge of the
Royal Army Ordnance Corps with the words Central Ord-
nance Depot Chilwell RAOC, around the border and the dates
1936—1982 (the opening and closure dates of the COD).
This is a unique souvenir of one of the major installations of
the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Each medallion will carry a
numbered certificate signed by the Commandant, to guarantee
its authenticity as part of a limited edition.
The cost of each medallion is £3.00, plus 25p postage and
packing for orders outside Chilwell.

SECOND
TIME
ROUND
IN the April 1970 edition of Tirr. GAZHTTE General Payne wrote,
on the occasion of Brigadier Persson's retirement from the Army,
" We all wish Joan and Bob a long and happy retirement." Now
he is once again retiring, this time after eleven more years as an
RO with the Corps. Brigadier Bob's ties with the School of
Ordnance go back to 1949 when he first became an instructor.
Later, from 1956-1958 he was back as a Senior instructor and
since 1971 he has been the power behind the thrones of succeed-
ing Commandants.
It was in 1971 that Brigadier Bob was
elevated from pamphlet writing to be in charge of the newly
formed Training Support Wing responsible for all administration
in the School thus, at the time, earning himself the soubriquet

The Chilwell Medallion.
As part of the commemoration of the marriage of H R H The
Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer the Dean and Chapter
of St. Paul's Cathedral have commissioned The Tower Mint to
produce two official editions of medallions.
Resulting from the association which exists between the
Mint and the Army Benevolent Fund, arrangements have been
made for a donation to be made to the Fund for every medallion
ordered by Army personnel, and for an allocation of the limited
sterling silver edition to be reserved for members of the Army.
This is an opportunity to acquire a permanent memento
of the marriage and also to help fellow-soldiers, past and
present, and their families in times of hardship.
The details are as follows: Solid golden bronze unlimited
edition £6-95 (inc. p. & p.). Solid sterling silver edition limited to
five thousand worldwide £29.50 (inc. p. & p.). (Each medallion
will be individually numbered and have its own certificate
of

authenticity). ' Frosted ' design on mirror-like * proof back-
ground, complete with high-quality presentation case. Cheques
How thoroughly and tirelessly he has carried out his
responsibilities will be known to many a grateful Commandant
and to many a DOS/DGOS whose Study Periods he has stage
managed to professional standards, as well as to the School
staff and countless students who have passed this way. Both
he and Joan, who has regularly supported so many School
functions, will be sadly missed but we are confident of seeing
much more of them as he is now about to direct his consider-
able energies into writing the next volume of the ki History of the
RAOC. Once again—and even more fervently—
We all wish

Joan and Bob a long and happy retirement. '
THE HOLT'S
SANDHURST
APPEAL
TRUST
ENCLOSED in officers copies of this months GAZETTE is a
leaflet outlining the Holt's Sandhurst Trust Appeal, the object
of which is to raise £500.000 to cover the building and main-
tenance of a new Sports Reception Centre at the Royal Military
Academy Sandhurst.
While few establishments can equal Sandhurst for sports
facilities there is one amenity which is sadly lacking—a proper
reception and changing area for visiting teams. It is at filling
this need that the appeal is directed.
Unit bulk orders of THE GAZETTE contain sufficient copies,
with the leaflet inserted, for distribution to officers. Retired
officers will receive the leaflet in their individual copy of THE
GAZETTE.
