Our football team has played twice but failed to register a
win. However, participation is the main thing.
Captain Bowen and Lieutenant Williamson spent Whitsun
ut
in the sticks. Captain Bowen spent a lot of time paddling
around the Mohnesee in an inflatable dinghy.
Lieutenant
Williamson and four fellow officers took the platoon tent out
into the wilds. It must have been good, everybody giving orders
and nobody to carry them out!
Congratulations to Lance Corporal Bonsall on substantive
promotion and to Lance Corporal Soellner on promotion.
We say farewell to the following on departure WO I
Chisholm to UK, Corporal Dickinson and Private Falrley to
civilian life, and welcome Corporal Folland, Lance Corporal
Bourne, Privates Godbold and Johnson.
STORES SECTION, 3 ARMOURED DIVISION
ENGINEER REGIMENT WORKSHOP
SINCE our last 'Newsletter' much has happened on the
exercise front. We have successfully completed Exercise Broad
Reach, the first full Regimental Exercise since restructuring.
After the hills, valleys and rivers of the Hameln area, Soltau
would seem paradise. With elements of 3 Armoured Division,
the entire Regiment crossed seven bridges in one night (is this
a record?). (Division Editor's note: Replies to the Stores
Section please, not to me).
The Squadrons are now on leave in preparation for train-
ing for our Operation Banner tour in July, The lucky Stores
Section personnel who ' volunteered ' are Lance Corporal Mike
Lowrie and Private Bomber Edwards. Best of luck lads, better
you than us.
We welcome, exchanging respectively their green com-
mando and powder blue AAC berets for those of a more sober
hue, Privates Jim Collins and Jim Latham. Congratulations to
Lance Corporal Moore on his promotion to Corporal after
many hours trogging, jogging and a variety of other physical
fitness activities.
We close with the news that Lance Corporal Paul * Taps *
Taphouse has finally gone native on local release. There is a
rumour that our WOIC is in a happier frame of mind since he
left!
4th Armoured Division
HEADQUARTERS
RAOC
THE season of Spring is upon us once
again, and in true fashion Headquarters 4
Armoured Division RAOC personnel cele-
brated the Pagan festival with a dinner
dance in the * Steinmeyer' Gaststatte
Herford. The evening proved such a
success it has now been decided that we
celebrate each season accordingly.
We welcome to the Ordnance Branch
Lance Corporal and Mrs Gordon Cuthbert from Northern
Ireland and Private Ernie Wise the CRAOCs new driver.
We welcome home after a long stay in BMH Rinteln Mrs
Eve Heritage wife of WD2 Keith Heritage, also a big welcome
home to Frau Suzanne Piontek wife of Herr Alvin Piontek our
illustrious vehicles clerk.
The staff of Headquarters RAOC paid an official visit to
The Queens Own Hussars in Detmold which proved a resound-
ing success, so much so that the CO asked us to let him know
well in advance when we were coming again. The staff in-
cluding Mrs Jan Brown (Miss E. & MA Clerk 1978) were
driven around Hob art Barracks in a Chieftain tank, a 432 and
a Ferret Scout car and all have now applied for a transfer to a
Cavalry Unit.
Our CRAOC has donned his directors cap once again and
is busily organising scenes for a new MOD film to be pro-
duced by RAOC. Captain Charlie (Hutch) White is arranging
locations and cast for the production and is overwhelmed with
calls from eager starlets, the DOWO even had a haircut 1
Our S02 Maint, Major David Bramble, has been kept very
busy playing tennis for the Division* refereeing rugby matches
and participating in the Herford Players latest production ' Ghost
on Tiptoe.'
ORDNANCE COMPANY
••\PRi'L has been a busy month for us here at Detmold. The
Jftain reason was due to Exercise Pack Saddle. Pack Saddle
nad been looming large on the horizon and it put a constant

Walker has been near insanity many times. After extraordinary

transport problems and endless bags of crisps, Captain Ivan
Greeves and 184 Petroleum Platoon (TAVR) eventually arrived
and settled in quickly. The first couple of days were spent in
unpacking the PUE, then they moved off into the field. The
exercise was a complete success and we were impressed by the
professionalism of the TAVR. We all wish them well and*
hope to see them again in the future.
Second Lieutenant David Inshaw has learned one lesson
since his arrival. A very basic one, that it doesn't pay to argue
with Land Rovers as they always come away without dents
and scratches,
This month we have said goodbye to Major Champion and
hello to Major P. S. Walton.
We have also said goodbye to Second Lieutenant Wallace
who simply cannot stay away from Sandhurst, Staff Sergeant
Dinsdale, Sergeants Parnell and Norman, Corporals Smith and
Mack, Privates Parr, Edwards, Mackey, Rosser and Fielding the
table tennis buff.
Hello to Second Lieutenant Inshaw, Staff Sergeant Drennan,
Sergeants Clydesdale, Buchan and White, Corporal Cole, Lance
Corporals Staniforth and Knight, Privates Dunnell, O'Neil,
Hayward, Rafferty, Thornett, Dobson, Mawson, Henry, Hope,
Culleton, Overall and Sampson.
Congratulations to Private (Scouse) Thornett who was
married on the 25th of March. We look forward to welcoming
his wife Anita to the Wives Club,
Congratulations are also in order for the following pro-
motions, Corporal Unwin to A/Sergeant, Lance Corporal Pauley
to A/Corporal, Lance Corporal Kirk to A/Corporal, Privates
Brock, Edwards and Dawson all to A/Lance Corporal.
Sergeants Maye and Straughier have returned after com-
pleting their Storeman's Bl Course. Sergeant Straughier did
very well in coming top.
On the 7th of May the Company followed along the lines
the former 20 Ordnance Field Park; this was in the field of
running. For many years 20 OFF ran up HermannsdenkmaL
and still does under its new name. Now this has extended to
the popular German pastime of running and walking for all*
On Sunday 7th May, three teams were entered in the Eighth
International Hiddesen "Walking/Running Event. The results
were quite unexpected. Two teams were entered in the twenty
kilometre Wolkslauf or run. Not only was the Company to come
first and third in the team event, but Sergeant Duncan Leitch
came first overall with a time of one hour seventeen minutes for
twenty kilometres. All members of the teams received medals.
The other team was entered in the ten kilometre * speed'
walking event. Again we came first in team event led by Staff
Sergeant Kelly, For that they too all received medals as well as
the team trophy.
The event was well attended by one thousand six hundred
and twenty four people. After the various events a bratwurst
