HEADQUARTERS
LAND FORCES CYPRUS
THE rainy season, not popular for visits, is virtually at an end
and new-comers are shedding ' woolly pullies.' A generally
quiet period for the RAOC element but it was noted that
Sergeant Eric Shaw's duties inevitably coincided with some sort
of drama, usually at one of the Island's airports.
One early visitor, Ann Armstrong of 'Soldier' and BFBS
fame, on a tour of the Islands Service amenities, hospitals, etc,
was hosted by Sergeant Alan Lovegrove and wife Sally.
The RAOC element still constitutes a high percentage of
the Garrison Soccer Team despite the temporary retirement of
Lance Corporal Don Bennett on crutches.
Staff Sergeant
Graham Hillier now busily packing is replaced in the Soccer
team by Corporal Keith Cammack who also pulls his weight
with Headquarters RAOCs Tug-of-War team. Sergeant Love-
grove our badminton star competed in the Interservices final
and gained a place in the forthcoming Army Cyprus Champion-
ships. Corporal Tom McCallion received a well earned trophy
as a member of the successful Episkopi Garrison Cross Country
team. Corporal Les Murphy still maintains a low profile albeit
a little more noisily on the local Kart Track.
Sergeant John Flannagan is to be congratulated on recently
passing his driving test at the first attempt. He already has his
second car and is happy with it now we've explained about the
ashtrays*
Staff Sergeant Phil Gadsden our new Chief Clerk G is
speedily settling in, too speedily in fact, say the local con-
stabulary. The afore-mentioned Corporal Cammack is also to
be congratulated on promotion and moving the ' Stationery'
Store,
Sergeant Lovegrove between badminton matches is
making detailed plans to delay his ETA at MOD as long as
possible and with the assistance of our local travel expert, Ann
(wife of Corporal Murphy) should have few problems. An-
other immediate departure is that of Superintending Clerk, WOl
Jim Burden now busily totting up * housing' points and show-
ing some surprise at the drastic cut in his points allocation on
commissioning,

continuously making the ad-
vertising posters of sunny Hong Kong a rather damp joke!
All Branches, I am informed, have been working at a steady
pace, waiting for the storm (literally—the monsoon season is
nearly upon us again), but otherwise enjoying some measure of
tranquillity. It would appear to be the month to go sick with
back trouble; Sergeant Dick Snell and Lance Corporal Mark
Arnold seemed to have succumbed. Happily, however, it was
only muscular and we are pleased to report that they are both
on their feet and resting again against the bar. Interbranch
lunch hour football this month has been the 'in game' and the
nifty boots of the Gurkha Signal Squadron—dealt a final blow
to our stalwarts, Sergeant Malcolm Berry, Patrick Cheung,
Eddie Tse, George Shum and Gray Koo.
We say farewell to Mr Eric Tandy, the Command Fire
Adviser, on promotion and posting to UKLF. Eric has been
with Ord in Hong Kong for some four years and though he left
with some reservations it was, he said, time to move on. We
wish him and his family all the very best for their new posting,
We welcome Mr Eric Bellars and his wife, Pat, to the fold ant
wish them a happy stay.
Farewell also to W02 Mick Mason of MS, Sergeant Johi:
Thompson, whose editorship of the Junk Magazine was wel
appreciated by all readers in the Colony, both going to Head
quarters BAOR. We welcome in their places Staff Sergeant Johi
Russell and Sergeant Brian Berrie and wish them and thei
families a happy stay in Hong Kong.

Seven pairs brought in scores of thirty eight or better but the
undisputed winners were W02 John Burgess (a guest from
Wulfen) and Staff Sergeant Don Miller (Dulmen) with fort\
two points followed by Mr Bill Shadwell (SSD Viersen) ant
Staff Sergeant Bill Murray (ICP) with forty one,
Jn the afternoon, it was a medal round off handicap in tw^
divisions—twenty fours and others. Captain Malcolm Ellis, tru
Dulmen DMA, won the more experienced division with a ne
sixty nine and Lance Corporal John Christian, also of Dulmen
shot a net seventy five to win the ' B ' Division. Mr Bil
Shadwell and Staff Sergeant Don Miller were runners-up ii
the A and B Divisions respectively.
WOl Matt Hudson, the Secretary of the 15 COD Society k
to be congratulated on a well-run meeting at his first attempt
The trophies were presented by the Commandant, Colone
Edwards.
THE RAOC
RIFLE
MEETING
THE meeting was a successful one particularly in the standar
of shooting; this could perhaps be attributed to the excellen
weather conditions throughout
It was disappointing, however, to see such a low tumou
of competitors this year. This may have partly been caused h
the date of the Royal visit to Bicester. Next year we will b
looking for greater support—and hoping that units are m
involved in any other major event during the meeting.
The provisional date for the 1979 rifle meeting is 6th t
llth May 1979.
