of the COD. It makes one wonder if some people ever read
DCIs, AGAls, UKLFOs and the DGOS Information Bulletin,
Engineer Equipments Branch has two occasions to honour
this month. We congratulate Sergeant and Mrs Swales on the
birth of their daughter Lisa and Staff Sergeant Cornes on pass-
ing his Driving Test. Major Graham Browning is already try-
ing to enrol Lisa into his Poliywog Club, as though twenty seven
children are not enough for his non swimmers classes at the
Garrison Pool.
Staff Sergeant Les Dalton is to be congratulated yet again
on his driving prowess. This time it is for coming thirty
second overall in the Scottish International Rally and being
beaten into second place by the Ford Works led by Mikkola,
Clark and Brookes. He was also the third Leyland car and
goes into the Record Book as being the first Austin 1800 ever
to finish the rally.
We also congratulate Lieutenant Colonel Tony Camfield
and Peggy Evans for their efforts in helping the DGADOS win
the MOD Intra Departmental Drama Festival final. The pro-
duction ' Ritual for Dolls' won not only the Drama Festival
Challenge Bowl but the Best Actress and Actor awards as well.
COD Chilwell came second and RAE Famborough third.
No stars came forward from DSM to take part in the
recent Donnington Garrison Sports Day but Major Browning
swallowed his pride and came third in, of all things, the Old
Soldiers Race. Rumour has it that he has not run since.
Lieutenant Colonel Camfield and his son Paul both took
wickets during the Military versus Civilian Officers Cricket
Match which followed the Sports Day. Unfortunately the
weather was foul but Messrs Gordon Williams, Roger Cooper,
Graham Hobson and others revelled in the glory of winning
and were delighted to receive the trophy designed by Captain
Peter Veal.
We welcome Captain Colin Buckle and his family to
Technical Equipments Division and hope that his stay will be
an enjoyable one.
Headquarters Director General of Ordnance Services
SECRETARIAT.
The Annual Fit-
ness tests have now been completed
but regular weekly jogging sessions
are to continue. Our over forties
have also been showing the Head-
quarters flag in the DGOS Challenge
Stakes culminating in ten successes.
At this time it is perhaps pertinent
to divulge that the Corps Register shows exactly one hundred
successful runs were recorded during the first twelve months
since the Challenge was first issued.
Now that the very successful and enjoyable visit by Her
Majesty The Queen to the Corps is behind us the administrative
load on the Secretariat has once more abated and this has now
been further eased by the arrival of Major Bob Atkins who has
taken over the duties of DAQMG Section one from 'caretaker*
Captain Tony Wilson-Ing.
ORD 1. Sergeant Geordie Cook, who after only six months of
Hampshire country air left LE(A) in June to return to ir The
Smoke/ joining 20 Squadron RCT at Regents Park. Before he
left however we were delighted to see him presented with the
Long Service and Good Conduct Medal by the DDGOS. He
has been relieved by Sergeant Paddy Snowden from C Supplies
Platoon of 4 Armoured Division Regiment RCT,
ORD 3. Our contribution this month is devoted entirely to
arrivals and departures. Lieutenant Colonel Brian Rivers left
on retirement in June to join the Management Services of the
Oxford University Estates and as his replacement we welcome
Lieutenant Colonel Paul Crosby from Logistic Section 2. Other
stalwarts who have finally decided to call it a day are Colonel
Bernard Tarsnane (Retd) after eight years as an RO following
thirty six years Army service and Major Eric Kirby (Retd) after
a grand total of forty four years service. They have been
relieved by Colonel Jack Hanlon (Retd) and Major Don Jenkins
(Retd) (from Ord 1) respectively. Finally Major David Cary
has left on posting to CV HQ and in his place we welcome
Major Tony Rows from Headquarters Eastern District.
Training Centre
HEADQUARTERS
THE Headquarters was well represented in the recent BFT
which is the first one for the 1978/79 training season and we
only had two failures but this was rectified a week later when
they passed. The football season finished with us taking part
in the RAOC six-a-side competition held at Donnington and in
our league we won two and drew two but was pipped for a
place in the semi-final by goal difference. It was a very sport-
ing and enjoyable competition and the organisers are to be
congratulated on a very efficient and well run tournament.
Sergeant Lawrence is to be congratulated on being medically
upgraded and is now training under the supervision of WOl
Johnston for his BFT.
Finally we welcome Captain S. J. Mitchell WRAC, who
has now taken over as S03 S D ; we hope she has an enjoyable
tour.
TRAINING BATTALION
AND DEPOT
THE arrival of Major Dennis Ford as our new Second-in-
Command and his instant devotion to Basic Fitness Testing has
caused a fluttering of hearts amongst those of our population
who are short of wind and a bit thick around the waist. His
keenness on BFT is tempered by his horse riding pursuits,
plus an interest in the art of fly fishing under the eagle eye of
Major Trevor Douglas-Hill.
We have said cheerio to Mrs Jane Ward of Officers Records
Section after some five years of excellent work on behalf of
Corps Officers; she is congratulated on her promotion to EO
prior to taking up an appointment with the Pensions' Office
at Guildford.
Highlight of the month was the Passing Out Parade of
Malta, Anzio and Aden Platoons, Some three hundred and
fifty relatives and friends watched the Parade and were im-
pressed by the high standards of drill and turnout. The
salute was taken by Lieutenant Colonel J. R. J. Janes of the
Employment Training School. He was very pleased to have the
opportunity of presenting Long Service and Good Conduct
Medals to three members of his own staff, namely, WOl E-
Burrell, W 2 L. Shaw RE, and W 2 M. Reeves QOH, and also
to Sergeant R. Dyer of QM *A.* The recipients followed the
Headquarters of
The Directorate of Supply Management (Army)
S MAN 2
LITTLE news from the S Man 2 world other than the major
event of the presentation of the Long Service and Good Conduct
Medal to Staff Sergeant Andy Hamilton by the DSM(A),
Brigadier Biggs, on 19th May. The presentation took place in
the Sergeants Mess at 1200 hours with the PMC, WOl Tony
Tuck (also of S Man 2) kindly agreeing to a bar extension!
Staff Sergeant Hamilton was accompanied by his good lady,
Mary, who refused to answer any questions on Staff Sergeant
Hamilton's good conduct on the grounds that it could lead to
the withdrawal of the award'
We are joined by our colleagues in S Man 1 in wishing
Brigadier Biggs every success in his new appointment as DDGOS
and bid a warm welcome to our new Director, Brigadier R. W.
Bromham.
DSM(A) TECHNICAL EQUIPMENTS
DIVISION
IT is to be hoped that our readers will not be too disappointed
with the brevity of these notes but it is a ploy to escape the
Editor's scissors and censoring pen.
Extramural activities seem to claim pride of place again
but, after all, little drama occurs in the halls of Technical
Equipments Division as far as work is concerned,
We hardly had a chance to miss Lieutenant Colonel John
Gentle when he paid a liaison visit to Northern Ireland for he
was there and back in forty eight hours. The visit from us
was long overdue if only because there are still many personnel
in high and not so high places who still think that we have a
Chief Provision Officer who comes under the Commandant
