Training Company provided strong support for the Minley
Manor Sponsored Walk over a sixteen mile course and raised
a considerable sum of money for service and civilian charities.
After doing his sixteen miles, Lieutenant Nigel Smellie was
observed to be walking in a strange, bow-legged manner.
Lieutenant Alex Sturdy and the Athletics Team are con-
gratulated on their excellent efforts in winning the Travers
Clarke Athletics Cup for 1978 as are Sergeants Thayre, Finch,
Treveil and Fell owes on their provisional selection for pro-
motion to Staff Sergeant during the next year.
Congratulations also to Lance Corporal and Mrs Frank
Foy on the birth of their son. Mother and. son are doing fine
but dad is still suffering from a strange illness, the symptoms of
which are bloodshot eyes and lack of sleep.
A pat on the back for Lance Corporal Knox on being
selected for DGOS Lance Corporal and welcome to Lance
Corporal Sue Duff WRAC—complete with GSM Northern
Irciand,
WRAC Company have said farewell to their office stalwart
in the person of Lance Corporal Daly and wish her a happy
tour of duty in BAOR,
PPS. The Commandant has approved this draft, with the follow-
ing comment, would anyone seeing Captain Harris ask him to
call in and sign his confidential report.
TRAINING SYSTEMS ADVISORY
BRANCH
OUR two representatives, W 2 Barratt and Staff Sergeant Smith,
accompanied by their wives, travelled to Bicester to see the
Queen. Staff Smith had the honour of personally being presented to
Her Majesty.
Sergeant Colbeck has returned from his time in hospital,
where the surgeons removed a varicose vein.
It is with pleasure we report on the good fortune of WOl
(now Mr) Jones who has taken up a position with the Ceramics
and Glassware Industrial Training Board, as a Training Advisor.
This appointment, following less than a year after John Flaherty
left us to join Ferranti as Senior Training Officer, would indicate
that TSAB is a good outlet into Industrial Training.
This month we have a few congratulations to register. First
to W02 Barratt, Staff Sergeants Smith and Elmslie on being
selected for promotion, on the last board. Staff Elmslie is also
to be congratulated on receiving his Long Service and Good
Conduct Medal. Congratulations go to our young clerk
W/Private Grant on becoming engaged to Corporal Watts, who
is currently on a Printers Course at the ETS.
We welcome to our ranks Lieutenant Burden, who takes
on the job of Training Evaluation Officer.
Royal Military Academy
Sandhurst
THE month of June brings an air of urgency over
New College as Major Mike Groves and Staff
5*fts£;'
Sergeant Pete Harrison carry out last minute
preparations, ready to send SMC 17 on their
final exercise to Vogelsang.
Captain Roger Wybom has now taken up
the reigns of Second-in-Command of Salerno
Company.
A rumour must havebeen started about the
RMA being a select posting (all true of course)
as our new arrival Staff Sergeant Ian Munro has
decided to come here rather than go into civvy street. Ian takes
over the hot seat in G Branch from Staff Sergeant John Kay
who is on his pre-release course pending departure into the
unknown jungle called the outside world.
Staff Sergeant George Stephen is after an entry into the
Guinness Book of Records as he is trying to get the SNCOs of
the RMA and Staff College together. This for a farewell drink
to say goodbye to our other departure WOl Eric Briggs.
A mention must be made (so I am told) of our own Dan
the big bang man who comes under the name of Captain Dick
Oldham who works in Faraday Hall with the Military
Technology team. That's it then.
From down in the depths of the Quartermaster's Office,
a noise of a head banging against a brick wall can be heard as
Staff Sergeant Brian Wicks tries to educate the Staff Clerks on
the new terminology of Supply Clerk (not Technical Clerk), but
finds this very hard going. Their vocabulary is very limited as
it hasn't appeared in JSP 101 yet With a bit of help from an
ex-Technical Clerk, the Second-in-Command Headquarters Wing,
the new title is slowly sinking in.
On the courses front we say welcome back to Lance
Corporal Briggs after completing his RPC course and wish
Corporal Lane all the best on his.
Victory College refuse to give us any news this time, some-
thing to do with Lance Corporal Peter Taylor filling a corporal
vacancy and being far too busy getting qualified,
Almost forgot Old College who are pleased to record that
Lance Corporal Ken Robson is learning to appreciate the real
joys of parenthood welcoming mother and new baby safely
home. Ken also is to be congratulated on his sub rank.
The last item is anonymous for fear of reprisals. When
Major Houseman was Supervising Officer at Headquarters 1st
British Corps he managed to get Letraset to produce RAOC
badges. They measure roughly one inch and two and a half
inches tall and are very well produced.
He has used the
occasional strip for barter carefully cutting off the code number.
Alas, one day his clerk slipped up I'm pleased to say. I know
the number and have sworn on the Blarney Stone not to say
S52264/B4436 or was it B25546/S3364, oh—!

EMPLOYMENT TRAINING
SCHOOL
LAST October heralded the arrival of Captain Mike Harris, the
Schools new unit scribe. In November he was in the process
of taking over although no one can remember the previous
occupant spraying private cars in the Vehicle Specialist Wing.
December and January saw our erstwhile Admin Officer up to
his neck in hose pipes and ladders. February saw our dis-
appearance from the pages of this esteemed publication. The
reason for these omissions however is nothing more sinister
than the fact that the said officer has encountered great
difficulty in putting pen to paper whilst manning the helm of a
yacht anchored at that most exotic of resorts, Netley. Our
lack of contributions has, of course, disappointed the scores of
readers who await news of our escapades with bated breath; it is
therefore an opportune moment to wish farewell to Major
Brian Parratt, WOl Dave Cartwright, Staff Sergeant Dave
Btirraclough, Sergeants Terry McGill, Jack Leek, Ian Leach,
Ian Parrotte, Len Savage, Corporals ' Magnificent M a i ' Black-
burn. Alec Cumming, Mr Jock Morrison, Norman Long and
Barbara Lumley. We wish them all well. Anyone who has
served in the School during the last twenty five years will of
course know Messrs Devaney and Wade. WOl Mike Devaney
has retired and fled to a bread round somewhere in France,
his loss is as great to us as it is to Allied Breweries. W 2 Joe
Wade has not only retired, but also heads our arrivals. He has,
woviId you believe, taken up employment as a Civilian In-
structional Officer at the School and is now told at frequent
intervals by all the School junior ranks to have a haircut. Joe
has been joined by none other than Mr Lenny Penrose who
many people will remember as a Military Instructor in the
School. We are indeed fortunate to have their services and wish
them well in the future. Our new Second-in-Command is
Major Brian Cole (or at least we think he is, but there are
rumours he only called on a liaison visit). For international
travellers—he can still arrange holiday weekends in Antwerp
at official duty rate. In addition we welcome WOl Eric Burrell,
WOs2 Ted Hamon, Dave Weyers (alas only for a short while),
Sr^x Sergeants Ray Scott, Len Morgan, Roy Hudson 15/19H,
Sergeants Mick Dooley Kings, Mel Sutton, Mick Blackmore,
John Gallager, Corporals Dave Oliphant, Bert Johns, Pete
Kent, Lance Corporal Kevin Golby and hope that they all have
successful tours. Congratulations are in order for Staff Sergeant
Jack Smith who within a few weeks of arrival, found himself
not only promoted, but also BEM. Pride of place however this
month must go to the only member of the jet set who travels
to work on a scooter, our typist, Mrs Maureen Whyte, who has
not only been seen taking tea in the grounds of a well known
Pa:ace somewhere oft: the Mall, but also going weak at the
kii-ss at the smiles of Prince Charles at Pirbright (if only
Captain Harris knew!).
PS. If by any chance our gallant sailor should read this,
your office is now the second one down the corridor, and the * in '
^ay needs dusting.
