Transcription second in the discus and fifth in the hammer and most deservingly
by winning the Victor Ludorum Trophy for the best athlete.
Private McQueen amazed us all by winning the 'star-
studded' Old Soldier's race. It is understood that Private Mc-
Queen is now thinking of presenting his trophy to Double
Diamond in recognition of the help they have given over the
years in preparing him for this monumental confrontation.
Congratulations to Staff Sergeant Slade on his promotion
and to Corporal Morton on his marriage to Miss Rosemary
Quinn, also to Sergeant and Mrs Swales on the birth of their
daughter, Lisa Marie.
Arrivals: Staff Sergeant McKenzic, Corporals McGavin,
Gill and Dell; Lance Corporal Bonney; Privates Roberts,
Conway, O'Neil and Wright.
Departures: Corporal Cartwright to Belize; Privates Levett,
Meek and Murphy to BAOR.
Central Ordnance Depot Donningron
THE Garrison Corporals Club was officially opened by the
GOC West Midland District, on the 5th June. The club was well
wetted. On the following day the first presentation of a Long
Service and Good Conduct Medal in the club was made by
the Garrison Commander to Corporal Geordie Lancaster.
Long Service and Good Conduct Medals were also presented
during the month to Staff Sergeant Burn RAPC and Staff
Sergeant Hains ACC, to whom we offer our congratulations.
Corporal Geordie Lancaster receives the Long Service and Good
Conduct Medal from Brigadier Short.
The Sergeants Mess held their Summer Ball on the 10th
June, and as normal with the capricious nature of the English
climate, the weather would not have been out of place at the
Christmas Draw. However, once you feed two hundred and
fifty people with a few glasses of very potent punch the evening
is guaranteed to warm up. The President of the Ball Com-
mittee, SSM Clive Kingston, was heard to remark, at about
3.30 in the morning, that it had all been worth the effort and he
wasn't feeling any pain at the time. As usual the ACC
surpassed themselves as the buffet was a delight, to both eye
and palate.
St Barbara's Weekend saw the most wonderful weather,
until the military officers v civilian officers cricket match started
on the Sunday afternoon, then the heavens opened up. Must be
a moral there somewhere. On the Saturday we had our athletics
meeting very enthusiastically supported. Seven new Garrison
records were set, and Private Burdon WRAC and Private Mc-
Kelvie RPC between them broke four. On Sunday morning
the church service and parade were held. The RAOC Staff
Band was in attendance for the weekend and we were very
pleased to see them and to listen to their music. All in all
a full and enjoyable weekend.
We didn't have a good all round year at Travers Clarke
but some success was registered by Corporal Hay who came
third in the Discus and fourth in the Shot; Private Wagstaff
is to be congratulated on winning the Pole Vault.
Would you believe that, on top of the Hash and other
physical things, our Major Sid Pincher has now started a
Garrison Jogging Club. The Club is supported by dependants
and civilian employees from the Depot, so if your husband
is posted
to Donnington ladies, you can now also join in the

fun. Fat and forty' is an expression never used in Don-
nington.

Central A m m u n i t i o n Depot Kineton
THE grand finale to yet another busy
month at CAD Kineton was our Mobex
78. Not one soldier escaped the extra
work involved in this forty eight hour
exercise—whether he was playing Mobil-
isation or No duff. Even the elements
contributed to the realism of these forty
eight hours with a six hour downpour
that left MHE Operators and soldiers
alike gritting their teeth and squelching in
their boots! We now leave our copious
observations and comments to the CPO—and wish him and his
staff lots of luck in the final analysis—whatever it may be!
A slightly oriental atmosphere to be found within the Unit
for the next seven days while we accommodate the one hundred
and forty members of the Hong Kong Police Band, who are
currently taking part in the Royal Show at Stoneleigh.
The Sporting scene at CAD Kineton always has a para-
graph—or six in our monthly article, as any dedicated reader
will note. However, for fear of appearing a totally sports
orientated Unit, the achievements this month go to the tennis
players alone, who have made it through the first round of
the Army Cup with a well deserved win against the Light In-
fantry Depot. They now move on to play the Army Apprentice
College in the West Midland District finals. Let's hope the
last week of Wimbledon doesn't detract from their final achieve-
ments.
However, a sporting paragraph must be dedicated to the
WRAC this month. Private Sharon James competed in the
RAOC Regatta held at Netley from 21st to 24th June; and
with only two weeks basic sailing training behind her she won
the young soldiers cup 1978, and our admiration and con-
gratulations.
Our summer camp for 1978 was, we like to think, every-
thing it was planned to be. The results that returned on the
millboards of the Training Wing Staff have proved that an
interest and enthusiasm did prevail throughout the weeks at
Swynnerton and that soldiers returned to this Unit as healthy and
vital statistics for the FFR report forms.
Our new RSM T WOl Jim Chalmers, has now firmly taken
root at CAD Kineton and all ranks are rapidly learning to
identify the new RSM from a far distance. We warmly wel-
come him to the Unit and trust that he will enjoy his time
here,
The star of our article this month is undoubtedly our Pay-
master, Captain Mike Gaffney RAPC, who was awarded the
MBE in the Birthday Honours List. Our warmest and sincere
congratulations to him.
Army School of Ammunition
PRIDE of place this month is given to photographer Sergeant
Dave Crocombe on the award of the British Empire Medal which
was announced in the Queens Birthday Honours List. Well
done, Sergeant Crocombe, your's could be one award to have
been earned by work of a * negative and positive* nature.
Guided Weapons Branch has organised an Inter Branch
Competition consisting of various sporting activities, the first of
which—Basketball—has resulted in a clean sweep for the skilful
exponents of CLA Branch, much to the chagrin of the hefty,
bully tactics of all in GW. The next sport to be attempted is
volley-ball
The School has had its normal influx of courses during
the last month and one hundred and two students varying in
ranks from Signalman and Private to Lieutenant Colonel plus
a plain Mr have passed through the classrooms. We have seen
among many cap badges those of QDG, RA, WFR, Gurkha
and Commando.
