Headquarters BAOR
MANY of the Directorate staff are running
around preparing for the annual Rheindahlen
inter-Church fete. One of our senior officers*
because of his expertise in organisation and
planning, is Chairman of the fete committee.
Lieutenant Colonel Tony Rees is stalls and
sideshow manager. We are running stalls for
potted plants and used books and sideshows for
a balloon race and wheel of fortune. Lieutenant
Colonel John Shircliff who is OIC the balloon
race wishes it to be known that it is not true that inflation will
be by means of hot air from surplus stocks in S Man Branch.
Could he have a personal supply? The Command Fire Ad-
viser's staff has been roped in to give a fire display which is
being organised by our SO (Fire) Mr Ted Hadfield. The real
work involving clerical and labour support is as usual in the
hands of our Superintending Clerk Conductor Frank Buckett.
The West Rhine Musical Society gave five performances of
1
The Merry Widow ' at the Garrison Theatre at the end of
June. SQMS Tony Dudley assisted back stage but Lieutenant
Colonel Tony Rees was bold enough to appear out front in
the chorus! Our theatrical activities also extend to the more
ic./aimate theatre with Major Hugh Heap and his wife Marion
creating the scenery for the local theatrical society's production
of 'Absurd Person Singular,' an ambitious undertaking involving
the construction of three different sets.
Our congratulations go to Corporal and Mrs Frank Sheehan
on the birth of a daughter.
Arrivals: Major R, A. Swindley, Captain G, W. Harris,
W02 A. J. Kennedy, Sergeant T. Dewhurst and Corporal R.
K, Marrion.
Departures: Major R. J. Hoy, Captain M. J, Steele and
V. 02 K. S. Webb.
BAOR Ammunition Inspectorate
REGIMENTAL training continues to enhance our Friday after-
noons and this past month has seen us running, marching, swim-
ming and shooting. We would like to report a one hundred per
cent pass rate on the range classification but this is not to be,
One of our ATOs (no names but he used to be in the Artillery
ar.d wears glasses) seems to have a problem with all calibres
1^3 than 175mm so he has bought a water pistol for his son
Matthew and can often be seen showing him how to load,
aim and fire. We have also attended a presentation on the
thinking and! reasons behind the new Basic Fitness Tests given
by a WOl of the APTC. A point brought out by the WOl
is that if your height is less than twice your waist measure-
ment you are overweight We now have an OC who is trying
to convince everybody that he is seven foot six inch tall and
an ABO who swears blind that he is six foot ten inch.
It's unusual for an individual to organise his own farewell
bi: 1 . then Corporal Mick Stripe isn't a usual individual. At his
3*~ing away party he arranged a grand prix complete with
scalextric layout. The event was extremely well run with
practice laps and qualification times which eventually produced
a final between two ladies—Mrs Chris Bellamy (one of our
civilian members) and Mrs Rosemary Anderson (wife of Sergeant
John Anderson). Rosemary Anderson eventually inched home
to the delighted cheers of her mother and father—ex-WOl (AT)
Benny Byles and Kathleen Byles who were holidaying with their
daughter at the time. Many of us there were delighted to see
Benny and Kath and we spent many a session talking over old
n-es. We would like to take this opportunity of wishing
Corporal Mick Stripe all the best at CAD Kineton,
We welcome back from 321 EOD Unit, Northern Ireland,
^ 1 John Rollison and Corporal Paul Myring, both of whom
reliably inform us that Captain Haydn Schofield is having a
r
ough time back in Belfast enjoying the world cup and latest
series of test matches live on the TV. Looking at the extra
inches around WOl John Rollisons' waist we wonder what else
he did. Sergeant Curly Thynne has returned from yet another
holiday with BATUS and for services rendered has now qualified
and been presented with the GSM (Northern Ireland) and Clasp
1962, (Not for services rendered with BATUS). Congratulations
to W02 Don Newlands on passing his driving course after
twenty years service. He is now the proud owner of a new
car which he bought out of the money he intended spending
on champagne when Scotland had won the World Cup. Staff
Sergeant Bob Cockbum has passed his German course to
qualify for the £30 tax free bounty and this should just about
cover his lost bets on the same event. It is rumoured that WOl
Alex Marshall is also out of pocket as a result of supporting
the cause but all Corporal Mac MacDonatd has lost is his
temper (will the Scots never learn). Welcome to Corporal Ian
Chilcott from Kineton and Corporal David Hoit who is with
us for a short stay.
Another addition to the ' establishment' is Clair Julia
Margaret Gunson; congratulations to our OC Major Nelson
Gunson and wife Marg. Both mother and daughter are doing
well. Notwithstanding our sincere wishes SACEUR went one
better by turning out and putting on standby the entire BAOR
at the estimated time of birth. Oneupmanship can be taken
a shade too far.
Planning and Workstudy Unit BAOR
TRAVEL WITH PWSV should be our motto-^rstwhile WSOs
should note that if posted to this Unit you will spend quite a
lot of time travelling the length and breadth of BAOR and at
more infrequent times UK.
This months travelogue reads
Berlin, Recklinghausen, Dortmund, Duisburg, Dulmen, Wulfen,
Andover, Bicester, Nottingham, Ruddington, Didcot, Goteburg
(Sweden) and Italy. Our wives greet us lovingly, our children
wonderingly and our OC motheringly,
Having mentioned the OC it seems appropriate also to men-
tion that he has now got the oars firmly back in his grasp,
but no doubt as his Italian holiday gets forgotten he will return
to his old self—not so much a leera more a benign smile. The
cartoon below is nothing like the truth, he has asked me to
say,
Back to work measurement, for some of the Unit, at the
RAOC (BAOR) Athletics Meeting. As usual the efficiency that
surrounds this Planning Unit kept everyone amazed. Two
results worthy of note were heading the shot — time 16.091
thingies and catching the javelin—height four whatsits.
