43 RP COMPANY,
ft would appear
from the postcards received that the
majority of the unit spent their
summer leave in Italy, except for the
OC who, it is rumoured, spent his
leave learning to play dominoes and
accept defeat gracefully.
Our unit sailing instructor,
Corporal Steve Baker has success-
fully
encouraged
large
scale
desertions from The Hill to the Mohnesee where he hopes to
qualify the likes of Cooksley, Renfrey, Lovett and White as
elementary Helmsman. There should be no great difficulty in
this as anyone who works at Pombsen spends much of their time

all at sea,*
The unit gladiators are girding their loins. Lieutenant Lacis
has taken messrs Russell, Thorpe, Etherington, and Wallace to
an isolated training camp in the Harz as part of the Battalion
soccer team's Pre-season training.
However, pride of place goes to the Company seven-a-side
rugby team who defeated the old enemy, 44 Company, in the
Battalion Competition to win the trophy.
Well done Staff
Sergeant Boscott et al and a special mention to Sergeant Willie
Hepburn who showed such skill with the funny shaped ball.
It is hoped that he will recover in the near future.
Congratulations to Corporal Mai Hook on his marriage
and to Lance Corporal and Mrs Gandy on the birth of their
daughter Michelle.
We wisjb a speedy recovery to Privates Dobbo Dob son
and Geordie Stead both of whom are in hospital as a result of a
traffic accident.
44 RP COMPANY.
This month has been a quiet month with a
lot of coming and goings on the leave front. The rugby team
known as the rugby machine have been in training for over
a month, and are preparing for the defence of CCRAOC cup.
However, down on the farm there's a rumour that the
population of geese is in for a drastic reduction and it is believed
that Sergeant Charlie McAteer has an extra large oven just for
the job.
The Regimental Training Wing is moving forward by leaps
and bounds and will no doubt prove a most popular place for
the younger members of (he Company to spend a week or two
improving their military skills. Since the departure of Staff
Sergeant now W02 Terry Foster the Sergeants Mess has acquired
a fish tank, knowing Terry's bad luck with them it wasn't
felt safe acquiring one before.
Sadly this month we say farewell to our CQMS, Staff
Sergeant Bill Disberry who leaves us for civilian life via Training
Battalion and Depot. Also we say farewell to Lieutenant David
Lillystone who is looking for new employment in 49 RP
Company. And lastly we say farewell to Corporal Matt Paul.
We welcome in their places Staff Sergeant Chris Bailey and
Corporal John Wansell and their families and Private Smudge
Smith.
Stop Press. Has anyone seen the RSM's piano?
Private John Herd using a Clansman radio with a worried Corporal
Steve McBurnie looking on
in the middle of a field (despite all that cam!). Private Duncan
who took to scuba diving in a rather deep lake, and a pleasant
twenty kilometre march during which ihe OC Major Fleming
had a stroll with Corporal Kyle and discussed the local history!
Petroleum Platoon visited our local friends at the German Heli-
copter School. They sampled the flight simulator shortly after
breakfast, and Lance Corporal Fleming. Privates Evans and
Wtilerton after a rough ride flying from Bremen to Buckeburg
(which took all of fifteen minutes) were rather disappointed at
not getting their wings,
Ammunition Platoon are functioning on all four engines.
The Platoon is hard at work at the outstations, with Staff
Sergeant Wilks and Sergeant Mean, masterminding a rather
large scale reorganisation. We understand that Pres Rankin and
Pooley really can cook in the field, and passed the * 4 9 ' taste
buds test.
The unit football team managed a five all draw against 342
Panzer Battalion at Arolsen, and the OC is keeping his fingers
crossed, this must be our year for football,
We welcome our new CSM, W02 Flowers who has already
played for the unit football and hockey teams, Corporals
Motfet and Preston. Privates Grier and Hutton.
Farwells to W 2 Avery who just managed to pass the gate
check before leaving. Lance Corporal McGinley, Privates
Bartlett. Milicevic and Wood. Many thanks for all you did for
' 49/ Congratulations to Private Pettitt on his recent marriage
to Rose and Private Wood on successfully passing the Com-
mando Course,
Stop Press: The CCRAOC kindly officially opened our
unit squash court, many thanks to him and our ' surprise' demon-
stration players Major Attrill and W02 Bradley, who travelled
from Headquarters BAOR to add to a super little Corps
occasion,
49 RP COMPANY.
We welcomed recently, the VQMG Major
General Thome CCRAOC Brigadier Skinner and the CO Lieu-
tenant Colonel Dickinson.
The VQMG, after visiting one
of our ammunition outstations returned to Harden Barracks
for lunch. He had a few words with an impromptu guard of
honour, Corporal Gallagher, Lance Corporal McFarlane, Privates
Peebles and McGinn before departure and said he wished he
could stay longer! The CO then attested Mark Ruddy, in the
presence of his proud parents, Staff Sergeant and Mrs Ruddy.
We hope that the Queen's shilling (courtesy of Captain Osborne)
given to Mark, will bring him good fortune in his chosen
career. In fact Mark Ruddy joins his brother Clifford, who was
also attested at the unit. Petroleum Platoon seems to be making
a takeover bid!
We also had another first when we actually had three
sergeant majors for a day! CSM John Moffat, returned from a
Zimbabwe tour, CSM Dave Avery due posting and handing over
to CSM Tommy Flowers the unit's new CSM who recently
arrived
from the hot spots of Bicester. The training staff, the
4
workers,' surpassed themselves when in the form of that
dynamic trio Corporal Gallagher, Lance Corporals Cox and
McDonald, they organised Exercise Obby I and Obby II, The
exercises which took the form of arduous regimental training
took place in some woods near the unit's barracks. Highlights
were Staff Sergeant Vincent and Private Madeley a ' fair c o p '
