Transcription Mr Phil Shepherd's private fire museum and 280 Petrol Filling
Platoon. The Petrol Filling Platoon drew a large crowd of
young trampoliners who obviously knew what the static tank
really was. However, for adults the real crowd puller was the
Field Bakery which did a roaring trade in freshly baked
bread. The net result was that the Display Director, Com-
mander Catterick Garrison, publicly declared that the RAOC
had, in his opinion, put on the best display of the entire show.
CRAOC, Lieutenant Colonel I. F, J. Hardie, would like to
use the medium of this GAZETTE to express his appreciation of
the contribution made by all members of RAOC and AFS who
worked so hard to deserve this accolade.
police forces, obtaining sponsorship from many people and of
course spent all his free time training. Training in the Detmold
area is no joke as it is extremely hilly but proved to be very
good for building up the leg muscles. Privates Goddard and
Pankhurst completed the team and they skated in legs, (what
else) not it must be added, without incident. At one stage they
were stopped by the German Police when they were skating
the wrong way up a small section of Autobahn. Fortunately
the police found it all rather amusing and were heard to
mutter "Crazy Britishers"! On reaching Flushing, the mileage
was just short of the target so the final figure was achieved by
skating around the ferry, which of course was completed with
full permission of the Captain, The trip was extremely worth-
while and the proceeds have been donated to SOS Kinderdorf,
the German section of the Save the Children Fund, Cancer
Research and the Army Benevolent Fund. Many good friends
were made enroute and the team would like to take this oppor-
tunity of thanking everybody who agreed to sponsor the
venture.
THE
GREAT CHILWELL
EXPLOSION
ON the first of July a Church service, followed by a parade
and a thanksgiving at the memorial, was held at Chilwell in the
memory of those unfortunate men and women who lost their
lives in what was to become known as the Great ChilweU
Explosion, which occurred in the Depot during the First World
War on 1st July 1918, now over sixty years ago. There are still
people living nearby who have vivid memories of the tragedy
which killed some one hundred and thirty four people and injured
many more,
EXERCISE
PARASHOT
I AM told by Captain Cox of the Combat Supplies Battalion
that the Battalion won Exercise Parashot. At the time of going to
press the details had not arrived at the Editorial Office but we
hope to have a full report next month.

ROLL ON
THE 4 Armoured Division Ordnance Company roller skaters
have achieved three hundred and sixty sponsored miles. The
sponsored rollerskate unfortunately terminated at Flushing in
Holland for a number of minor reasons which, when
accumulated, resulted in the Sheerness to Marble Arch leg being
cancelled. Private Carey was the organiser and brains behind
the venture, he spent weeks planning routes, writing to various
