MARATHON
FOLLOWING the successful twenty five kilometres mini-
marathon, the streets of Berlin were alive with long distance
runners again this autumn for the inaugural Berlin city marathon.
Over three thousand eight hundred competitors took part in this
forty two kilometres [twenty six miles) event, including over one
hundred military and dependent personnel from the British
Sector.
The marathon started at the famous Reichstag building near
the Brandenburg Gate, and finished near the Kaiser Wilhelm
Gedachlnis Church ("Blue 1 Church), The route traversed such
well-known landmarks as, Checkpoint Charlie. Kurfiirstendamm,
Schbneberg Rathaus (where John F. Kennedy made his famous
k
Ich bin ein Berliner" speech), Ernst Reuter Platz, and the
Siegesaule (Victory Column).
a grunt from this fund should make his request to the Chairman
of the sport concerned by 1st January each year. The ease, with
the support of the Chairman, must reach the Corps Secretary by
1st February each year. After which, all such submissions will
be considered by the Corps Central Funds Committee, who will
make the grants they consider appropriate.
Any member of the Corps who considers that he has a case
for a grant in aid of a sport or adventurous activity for which
no formal Corps Committee exists, may make his application
direct to the Corps Secretary. Such bids must reach the Corps
Secretary by 1st February each year.
AN
RAOC CADET UNIT AT
WEST MOORS
THE Dorset Army Cadet Forces newest unit was officially
opened by Brigadier Berresford COO Headquarters UKLF, The
unit which is forty strong with fifteen due to join on the next
intake is RAOC badged and located within the Petroleum
Centre. Four sons of soldiers are members of the unit. The
Brigadier is shown talking to Cadet McMenamin whose father,
Sergeant McMenamin, now serves at COD Bicester. Also present
at the opening was Dorset Cadet County Commandant Colonel
Pike. Representing the Petroleum Centre were Lieutenant Colonel
G ill berry and W02 Mc In tyre.
At the end of the opening parade the Chief Ordnance Officer
addressed the Cadets and their parents and said " You were
extremely smart—I've been going around cadet units over the
years and you're as good as any I've seen."
Following the parade the visitors, including nearly eighty
parents, toured the activities on the Cadet Training Programme.
Three Staff Sergeants from Headquarters Berlin on a training run
before successfully completing the inaugural Berlin City
Marathon.
Staff Sergeants Dave Beadswarth, John Claughton
and Dave Kilnan.
Six RAOC personnel and two dependents from Ordnance
Services participated in the marathon, and all finished in credit-
able times within the five-hour limit. This was a good pro-
portion when set against the relative strengths of the Battalions
and other Units. The first RAOC Berlin participant to finish
was Staff Sergeant Dave Beadsworth from Headquarters Berlin
in three hours thirteen minutes. Two other senior NCOs from
the Headquarters staff followed him home—Staff Sergeant Dave
Kilnan in three hours thirty minutes, and Staff Sergeant John
Cloughton in four hours ten minutes. Of the Ordnance Services
runners, Staff Sergeant Ken Bartlett produced a personal best
time of three hours thirty minutes, and Staff Sergeant Al Cowli-
shaw clocked four hours forty minutes. Mrs Jeanette Kilgour,
the wife of the Chief Clerk, who has been sweeping all before
her in local Volkslauf events, completed the marathon in three
hours thirty six minutes, and ten year old Cheryl Page, running
with her dad, Major Brian Page, finished in four hours fifty
three minutes,
All in all, a very successful Berlin marathon for the RAOC
with a one hundred per cent finish rate and no disabilities to mar
the proceedings!
GRANTS FOR SPORTS AND SPECIAL
ACTIVITIES FROM RAOC CENTRAL
FUNDS
ONE welcome result of widespread support for the 4 Soldier's
One Day's Pay Scheme " should be a more liberal availability
of money to fund Corps and unit sports and adventurous
activities.
At a recent meeting of the Corps Central Funds Committee
it was decided to reserve a sum of money each year to help
individuals and groups who had, by their sporting distinction
and adventurous achievements, brought or would bring honour
to the Corps, but in so doing incurred or would incur, significant
personal expense.
