Transcription CORPS WEEKEND IN BAOR
(Photographs by Staff Sergeant Kimpion)
^GAIN this year BAOR was lucky in their choice of dates for
their Corps Weekend and managed to avoid a clash with other
major BAOR events which appear to crop up with little notice
throughout the year. Even the weather cleared sufficiently to
auract a good attendance. The main events were the Athletics
Meeting and the Officers' Annual Ball in the evening,
The meeting was held in the Stadium, VSD Moenchenglad-
ba.h. Ten teams from RAOC Units and RAOC in Head-
quarters Units took part in this one day meeting. The eight
hundred metre and hammer events were re-established into the
programme with the emphasis again on team events.
Geoff Odams was once again on duty as * Mr Starter' and
his expertise, together with the efforts of many "volunteer'
officials, ensured that the programme kept its tight schedule.
Competition was keen, particularly in the five thousand
metre and fifteen hundred metre where Corporal Binks of
SSD Dulmen and Corporal Eaton of Headquarters BAOR had
a private battle, with the former triumphant in both races. 1 (BR)
Combat Supplies Battalion won both the relay races in grand
style, just breasting the tape in front of 3 BAPD and SSD
Viersen/VSD Moenchengladbach,

The 5*000 Metres get under way.
Sergeant Lancaster, representing Corps Troops, threw the
hammer 38.18 metres, which to our reckoning, is a new record.
With one event to go, three teams had equal points for the team
challenge cup, the amalgamated SSD Viersen/VSD Moenchen-
gladbach team being confident as the event was the shot, and
•h^r entry was RSM Black. Their confidence was justified,
widi SSD Dulmen having to take second place and 1 (BR)
Corps Combat Supplies Battalion third for the major trophy
of the meeting.
SSD Dulmen take the strain.
The tug-of-war competition, run on a league basis in the
early stages, provided entertainment throughout the day, as did
the hand signals of the chief tug-of-war judge, Major David
Evans, during each pull.
The prizes were presented by Mrs Crawley, wife of DOS
BAOR, to whom a bouquet of flowers was later presented by
Tracy, daughter of Sergeant Williams.
The future of the stadium has still not been decided but
it could well be the last time the Corps Meeting is held there.
In appreciation of the contribution made to RAOC (BAOR)
Athletics over the last twenty live years, a presentation was
later made to Herr Huth MBE T OIC Depot Services, VSD
Moenchengladbach. Under his direction the stadium was con-
structed in 1953/54 and the Corps meeting has been held there
ever since.
The results were: —

The annual RAOC (BAOR) Officers Ball was held at the
Officers Mess 3 BAPD Bracht. Despite a slightly lower turn
out than had been expected, everyone agreed that this year's
ball was an even greater success than last year. Although the
official end of play was 2,30 am, the party was still going on
at 4 o'clock and even the band was reluctant to go home.
This being a family occasion, there were no official guests.
The occasion was attended by our three Brigadiers and their
ladies—the DOS, Brigadier Peter Crawley, Brigadier John Moore,
the Commander Rhine Area and Brigadier Peter MacDonald
from Headquarters 1 (BR) Corps. The evening was not for
the sole enjoyment of the very senior however, as the ball was
attended by a complete cross section of officers, senior and
junior, from Field Force and the Base, all of whom thoroughly
enjoyed themselves.
