PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Major Jim Steele, Headquarters 2nd Armoured Division, with a motherless lamb, on a farm in the outback of New South Wales, near Wallangarra. Apprentice Sergeant John Mathias of * B ' Company, RAOC Apprentices College with two alpine guides at Val Veni near Courmayer in the Aosta Valley of Italy. In the background is Mont Blanc {Monte Bianco, fifteen thousand six hundred and thirty two feet). Apprentice Sergeant Mathias was a member of the expedition to climb the mountain (led this year by Captain Eammon Hannaway RAOC). Members spent three weeks training in North Wales and two weeks high-altitude training in the Italian Alps. A t the RAOC BAOR Sailing Regatta, There was a good turnout by RAOC in 3rd Armoured Division with noteable mention of Private Adrian Blackburn who was ably crewed by Alister Beaton the son of Major Chris Beaton of HQ RA 3rd Armoured Division seen holding their trophies. — 248 |
