Major Potter has taken over as OC A Company from
Major Bebbington who has departed for BAOR. W02 Bell,
CSM Headquarters Company of only two months, has accepted
a short notice posting to the School of Ordnance next month.
Was it something we said?
Central Ordnance Depot Chilwell
THIS years Chilwell Garrison Gala
provided one of the most successful and
enjoyable days that Chilwell has seen for
a long time. We set our sights at raising
£1,000 on the day. We combined with
the Nottinghamshire Pipe Band Festival
and despite our misgivings of having to
share the field with thirty four Jock
Pipe Bands the sun shone, the music
played, the crowds rolled in, the RAOC
Sky Divers landed spot-on, mon vieux
pote from next door smiled, and Mike
Murphy made £169 on a stall he and Captain Paddy O'Connell
worked out only the day before. We passed the target and are
well on our way to the second thousand. Everyone who took
part, and most people did, deserve a pat on the back.
Congratulations to the Garrison Players on reaching the
finals of the Ministry of Defence Drama Competition. In
presenting one of the acts from their latest saucy scandal 'Not
Now, Darling,* produced by Eileen Clements, they were awarded
second place, which is no mean achievement
Back on an ecclesiastical note, sponsored Church Services
are now the in-things; and if the first one is anything to go by,
very successful they will be. The fairly new Chief Administra-
tion Officer must have wondered what he was in for to see so
many of his staff on their knees at one time. Just imagine
the Quartermaster and the RQ on their knees together! Some-
one mentioned the QM was beginning to look old for his
years and put it down to the auditors being in, but I know it's
the effect that RQMS Godwin is having on him. Seen last
week, was the RQ being taken for a walk by his newly acquired
dog. He didn't buy it from a breeder or a kennel did he? He
got it free from Melton Mowbray. Chilwell is having the
opposite effect on Major Don O'Mara who, whistling around
underneath an outsized crash helmet, on an under-sized Honda
is looking much younger than his one hundred and fifty four
years. But they wouldn't have him in the Isle of Man Grand
Corporal MacKenzie, RPC and the Families Officer, they look
as though they will achieve great things, especially now that
the PR! Minibus is at long last back on the road.
Central Ammunition Depot Kineton
BRIGADIER DALTON, Director Base
Depots, was the Inspecting Officer on the
occasion of our annual FFR. Th e
Brigadier was met by the Commandant
at the main gate where he inspected the
Guard consisting of RAOC and RPc
personnel The Brigadier then began a
whirlwind tour of the Depot where he
made time to speak to the Soldiers and,
in passing, corrected the spelling <(
of
vehical, er; I mean vehicle, in MT. i
told you to put ' VOR * not vehical, I tell you what, put Equip-
ment "! At the end of the day the Inspecting Officer, pleased
with
what he saw, gave us a clean bill of health, and a pass

The Chilwell (Full Bore) Shooting Team has had a very
successful season. Coming fourth in the Eastern District Meet-
ing, third in the RAOC Meet and eleventh out of thirty six
minor Units competing at Bisley, This is the first time a team
from Chilwell has reached Bisley and to be placed eleventh
is a very worthy effort. Individual medals were won by Captain
Fumeaux-Harris, W02 Smith, Lance Corporal Aubrey and
Corporal Vinntcombe who won the Chilwell Plate, bringing the
trophy to Chilwell for the first time since it was presented by
the Depot some ten years ago.
It's too late to warn RAOC Cyprus that Lieutenant Mike
Murphy is on the way because he will already be there by now
and Cyprus probably well aware of it. We just hope he is still
a Captain. Chilwell will never be quite the same again. A
fond farewell from everyone in Chilwell also goes to RSM
Frank Brocklehurst who leaves for civilian life, as does Sergeant
Terry Ryan, Corporals Frank Hopson and Dixie Dean. Good
luck to Lance Corporal Smith, the Privates Morris, Taylor,
Sharpe, Mason and Wright all on the move to BAOR. At the
same time we welcome WOsl Scorer from Bicester and Warren
from BAOR.
Who is this Officer F Dash or F Oblique? Besides running
a hockey team, organising enjoyable and informative dog and
stick walks, captaining a successful full bore shooting team,
driving an FLT, collecting FMT 3s, he has now taken to coastal
sailing. Well done, Captain Furneaux-Harris.
The Guild of St Helena, now in the hands of Mrs Eva Booth,
visited Bingham Church (mentioned in the Doomsday Book)
last month. More recently, while Mrs MacdonaJd and Mrs
Garland looked after the toddlers, the ladies of the Guild were
shown the secrets of our Printing Branch by Mr Fred Berry.
We wish every success to the Junior Ranks ladies who, under the
guidance of Mrs Roselyn Guyan, Mrs Ann Buswell and Mrs
Moira MacKenzie have formed a club and are making good
use of the Community Centre. With a bit of help from Lance
A second highlight was 45 (Shadow) Company's ten day
exercise in the murky depths of Durham, with 10 Ordnance Sup-
port Battalion, The exercise went well and many lessons were
learnt; hopefully the BAOR Exercise will go smoothly. The
rumour that everybody had returned sun tanned was soon dis-
pelled when at First Parade the following day it was found
that the tan was not ' bath-resistant/
The Officers Mess team of six colonels; Colonel Berresford,
Lieutenant Colonels Hendy, Roach and Bhabutta with the help
of a couple of friends in the guise of Lieutenant Colonel Elliot
of Bramley and Lieutenant Colonel Robson of DLSA, came
second in the DBD Officers Mess tennis competition. This result
gave the CADs/DLSA team overall first place in the DBD
Cup, having come third in the golf and first in the cricket.
Even more success follows the tennis team and they are now
set to meet the winners of the SW v SE District match after
winning the West Mid/Wales match in the Army Cup.
The cricket team have had further successes; at Black-
down Kineton beat 10 Ordnance Support Battalion, by seventy
seven runs to win the DGOS cricket cup. Lieutenant Colonel
Roach thirty four, WOZ Ford thirty three. Well done!
On the canoeing scene our intrepid band grows a little
larger each week, with regular training sessions taking place,
most evenings, on the local canal at Fenny Compton. The
weekend of the 22nd/23rd July saw a team of nineteen souls
ably led by WOs Mike Haslam and Dave Young, depart for
the Army Sprint and Long Distance Championships held on
the River Wye at Monmouth. The team did not return all
conquering, but considering that they were largely novices,
with little training behind them, acquitted themselves well.
Special mention must go to Private Jan Lloyd, WRAC, who
managed to find second place in the finals of both the women*
five hundred metres slalom and five hundred metres white
water, racing canoe events. The momentum and enthusiasm
