However,
iot all the canoeing is on the competitive side, there are plans
-o on Adventure Training and Camping Trips whilst Private
iirTjernon and friends are hoping to do a 'Sponsored Paddle*
n aid of charity.
Returning to the Headquarters Block. Steady wisps of
; team are seen to be rising regularly from Planning Branch as
vlajor Miles Greenhalgh cracks the whip over his perspiring
itaff in his efforts to clear all the projects directed his way
icfore he moves to BAOR in early October. There k is no truth
in the rumour that he is really just clearing the In Tray *
ivhich was full on his arrival at Kineton two years ago.
Army School of Ammunition
THE 1978 Commonwealth and Foreign Ammunition Tech-
nical Course recently departed and
during the ' farewells' to our
(
overseas visitors Sergeant Dave Snappy' Crocombe was much
in evidence and one result of his skill is shown here where the
Chief Instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Guy, receives, on behalf
of the School, a course plaque from Lieutenant Hassan of the
Dubai Army*
Yet another of our stalwarts is leaving us, Mr Reg Ward
is retiring after serving in the Depot since January 1946. He
has served as the Secretary to the CPSA and the Longtown
Whitley Council for over twenty years. We wish him well in
his retirement and thank him for his loyalty and hard work
over the years. He was presented with a cheque from his
fellow workers.
It is with deep regret that we report the death of Sergeant
J, Lennon MDP, killed in a road accident. * Jim ' as he was
known, served in the Glosters from 1938 to I960 and on dis-
charge enlisted in the MDP, and has been at Longtown since
1972. He was well liked and respected by his friends and
colleagues. He was Sergeant IC Dog Section and Area Ad-
viser on MDP dogs and was in fact returning from Melton
Mowbray after seeing one of his dogs win the Northern Sector
Dog Trial when the accident occurred. The funeral was at-
tended by his police colleagues and military representatives
from the RAVC Training Centre and CAD Longtown. We
extend our deepest sympathy to his wife and family.
Leaving us are WOsl Athroll and Paterson to civilian life
and Sergeant Nice to Kineton.
Joining us is Corporal Trude
and family-
Vehicle Depot Ashchurch
THE highlights of the last two months have undoubtedly been
the Freedom of the Borough of Tewkesbury Parade and the
Sergeants Mess Summer Ball.
The Freedom of Tewkesbury was celebrated by a parade
and inspection by the Mayor of the Borough, Councillor F. J.
O, Martin, followed by a march through the Town, with the
Mayor taking the salute at the Town Hall. In the evening the
Corps Band Beat Retreat in Tewkesbury after which a very
successful station dance was held in camp,
The Sergeants Mess summer ball, after much hard work by
the PEC, Staff Sergeant Tony Cooper, and his willing helpers,
was another very successful affair. The setting was the court-
yard of a medieval castle, and thanks to the excellent enter-
tainment and banquet, everyone went away smiling.
On the sports field we have our cricket team who reached
the final of the South West District Minor Units Cup, to beat
22 Locating Battery RA by seven wickets. This qualified them
for the quarter final of the Army Minor Units Cup, only to be
beaten by AAC Chepstow in a very unlucky game for Ash-
church. At least we have one trophy on show.
The Chief Instructor accepts the presentation from Lieutenant
Hassan of the Dubai Army.
On the regimental front we have managed to achieve almost
ninety per cent passes on Basic Fitness Testing and that in-
cludes both staff and visiting students. Those who are students
to be will be delighted to hear that school joining instructions
have been amended to include BFT ' uniform *[
Major David Hourahane has left us for the vigorous and
airy reaches of Aldershot and beyond where he is to take up
the mantel of OC 6 Field Force Ordnance Company. The
Sergeants Mess saw hirn off in true and generous style. The
Chief Instructor presented him with a hockey stick which we
hope will be as hard wearing, long suffering and resilient as its
new owner. Captain Douglas Hewitt has arrived and has planted
one foot in TD and C Branch and the other in EOD as the
branch ATO. This has tended to bring unexpected questions
of demarcation during the inter-branch potted sports com-
petition. We have also welcomed Staff Sergeant Bob Monday
from BAOR who joins GW Branch thus maintaining the overall
cutesce of noise volume in the Staff Common Room.
We end on a good wicket in that CAD Kineton and the
School won the DGOS Cricket Cup for the first time. The
School was well represented by the Chief Instructor, WOl John
Morling, W02 John Lawrence, Staff Sergeant Paul Mitchell and
Private Paul Grimsley, a student on the 1973 AT2 Course.

FITNESS TESTS, range qualifications, hikes along the Pennine
^•i; and in the Lake District had us wondering if we had
^.anged our role. However, despite all this activity by our
nil 1 nary (all twenty two of us) the Depot work has been as
hectic as ever. A study of our training statistics show that
uiose who shoot worst show more speed and endurance in the
titness tests.
