Headquarters BAOR
THE Annual Rheindahlen inter-Church Fete
took place on the 8th July. Staff of Ordnance
Directorate were very prominent behind the
stalls and manning the various side-shows. The
weather prospects look bleak early on but the
sun broke through sufficiently around ten
o'clock to attract good custom to the stalls and
a good profit was made.
We were delighted to have our Represen-
tative Colonel Commandant, Major General
Stanyer and Mrs Stanyer in Rheindahlen with us. The General
based himself in Rheindahlen to enable him to visit installations
in the Base Area and no doubt those visited will be submitting
their own notes to THE GAZETTE.
Arrivals: Major R. B. P. Smith and Lance Corporal D. R,
Harris.
Departures: Major R. Embley, Staff Sergeant A. E. Johnson
and Corporal J. E. T. Bradley (WRAC).

Planning and Worksrudy Unit BAOR
THE main theme of this months notes is congratulatory: —
Firstly to Angela Stott, wife of SSM David Stott, who has been
awarded the Order of Merit in Scouting. Angela spends many
hours furthering this very worthy cause, and has travelled many
miles to increase both her own knowledge and to instruct
others to organise and lead both Scouts and Cubs in BAOR.
The whole Unit offers its sincere congratulations and best wishes
to Angela on this prestigious award.
Long Service and Good Conduct Medals were presented
by the Representative Colonel Commandant to Conductor Dave
Ashworth, SSM Mat Hudson and SQMS Geoff Seaby at a
ceremony in the Sergeants Mess this month. Congratulations
to all recipients.
Further congratulations to Dave Ashworth on his appoint-
ment to Conductor.
Farewell to Corporal Terry Kennedy and wife Kim who
have been posted almost quarter of a mile away to ICP BAOR.
Welcome to Lance Corporal Steve Boyle, fresh from the
Commandos—obviously Manning and Record Office have heard
of this Unit's endeavours in the BFT stakes, which incidentally
are one hundred, per cent passes.

RECENTLY we had a visit from the Representative Colonel
Commandant, Major General Stanyen He toured all Groups and

duct Medals to Conductor L Edwards, SSM T. Harrison, SQMS
S. Dodds, Staff Sergeant R. G. Greenacre and Sergeant E. T.
Welham,
This season the Trumans and Boycotts of Viersen cricket
team gained a place in the final of the Rhine Area Minor Units
competition. After a fine win against 154 FAD by eighty five
runs in the semi-final in which one hundred and fifty runs for
four wickets were scored, we came up against 8 C P + C C D RE
in the final.
On winning the toss we went into bat and scored one
hundred
and fourteen off the thirty overs allotted, with good

knocks * by Staff Sergeants Roy Haslett twenty nine and Jim
Hall twenty eight. The other side then went out to * swing the
willow' while bowlers W 2 Pat Ryan three for twenty and
Corporal John Bertram two for twenty two endeavoured to
halt the advance. However, after a close and exciting finish
8 CP + CCD RE ran out winners by the narrow margin of three
wickets.
Happy days for our anglers.

Rhine Area Angling Champions for 1978 as a result of their
excellent team performance in the two separate championship
matches. The result was particularly pleasing to Captain Leslie
Jordan of Headquarters, for he formed the Moenchengladbach
club two years ago and is also responsible for initiating the
Rhine Area championships.
Congratulations to Conductors N. E. Fletcher and A. L.
Tomlin on their appointment to Conductor and to Staff Sergeant
Greenacre on his acting promotion.
Welcome to Major Dunn, Captain Inman, Lieutenant
Colonel Jarvis (Retd), SSMs Brunt and Rumney, Farewell to

MOENCHENGLADBACH
LAST month we allowed ourselves the luxury of sentiment
aver the imminent demise of our Unit but just occasionally we
find it difficult to resist feeling angry about it too. In human
terms the Unit has inspired a lot of affection and loyalty over
the years and there have been moments of almost fierce pride
when small groups have been prepared to push themselves to
the limit to earn distinction for their comrades.
An example of their indomitable spirit was our swirnrning
team's recent triumph at the Rhine Area swimming champion-
ships when we retained the Minor Units title for the second year
running. This was a remarkable achievement considering the
heavy commitments faced by the Unit and reflects great credit
on the Team Captain, Corporal Campbell, who created the team
and organised their training. We only regret that we could not
send them to the BAOR Championship in Berlin where we
know they would have given a good account of themselves.
Most of our other sporting teams are suffering from the
effects of our dwindling numbers and we are now obliged to
enter into affiliations or rely on individual endeavours. How-
ever we were able to enter just about the whole Unit for the
Unit Orienteering Day at Viersen last month and although for
most of us this sport was unfamiliar we achieved quite credit-
able results. Colonel Maurice Young who at the age of forty
five has recently ' discovered' and become utterly obsessed with
this very demanding sport also became our resident * gladiator*
beating all the over thirty fives in our Unit and coming second
overall at Viersen in that age group. More recently our Unit
team came fourth in the Eighth Rhine Area Orienteering Meet-
ing.
On the social side of life our Junior Ranks Club staged a
very successful Summer Ball Much of the credit for the flaw-
