Headquarters BAOR
WE must begin our notes with a mention of the
visit to the JHQ of the Bundespresident Carl
Carstens. The weather was kind and everyone
seemed pleased and impressed with the whole
proceedings. (Including BFBS Television.)
There's bowling and there's bowling . . .
Lieutenant Colonel George Ross (Retd) is quite
involved with two teams the Academicals and
the Allsorts, both winning their leagues yet
again! . . . While S Man's the Director's beat
Kathys Killers, an RAF team from Rheindahlen, eight nil
recently,—but the result was declared void by the league
organisers I The Directors were most upset — they hadn't
beaten anyone eight to nil before or since'.
Corporal Reg Black is at it again, he's over in Greece
—running. He's due back soon to take part in the Bielefeld
Marathon. Talking of Bielefeld, S Man has seen a change
of Chief Clerks, out to Fallingbostel is Charlie Hunter, and
in fresh from eighteen months holiday with 1(BR) Corps is
Keith Honeysett.
Major Roger Attrill, Sergeant Dave Le Page and Corporal
Paddy Keating are back from the UK where they took part
in the RAOC Squash Championships in Deepcut. They beat
Donnington but were themselves knocked out by 4th Armoured
Division, useful experience was gained by all! On more local
lines, Captain Jim Ritchie was knocked off the top of the
Directorate Squash Ladder by Major Chris Green, just before
the latter was elevated to Lieutenant Colonel and posted to
Headquarters NORTHAG, well done sir! Also elevated, Major
Brian Roberts of Tech Svcs/Resource Man/Systems and Auto,
I forget which, but well done sir!
Next door to Major Roberts, is Sergeant Bill Cammack,
Bill is now involved with the Rheindahlen Mini Basketball
Club, encouraging youngsters to take up and play the game. Bill
wants it made known that ' mini' refers to age and not size!
Congratulations to Sergeant Frank Adams of the presenta-
tion of his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
Defence Reviews of Reviews have meant an eyes down
month in Combat Supplies and all requests for newsworthy
items have been met with a ' go away' {or words to that
effect).
However, your correspondent has managed to glean
a few snippets. Mr Harry Holden a well-known member of the
branch has been married, honeymooned and, by the time this
appears, will be back in harness as unfailingly cheerful as
ever. Congratulations and our very best wishes!
Sergeant Mick Earthey has not been seen for some time
and rumour has it that he is on leave—watch this space for a
full report.
Captain Eamonn Hannaway is on leave, back in UK to take
part in fell racing in the Lake District. Discussion of this little
known sport led someone to enquire whether it involved dogs
being released after the runners, so we await with interest the
good Captains' return (on crutches?)
Strange unearthly noises have been heard emanating from
Major David Wrights' office but, contrary to popular belief, it
is not the cries of his clerks being belaboured over BAOR
hockey fixtures, our S02 Ground Fuels has a solo part in the
forthcoming production of Yeomen of the Guard, What is
known in BFG petrol coupon circles as singing for his supper.
Talking of petrol coupons, Lieutenant Colonel John Shircliff
(Retd), was allowed to visit Hamburg recently for the monthly
coupon check. All were subsequently agreed that although
the subsequent Polizei Identikit picture included the beard, the
general likeness was not all that good.
RAOC Rheindahlen Garrison have entered a soccer team
in the DOS Cup this year. Our own WOl Paul Sowerby is the
non-playing coach, though if past experience is anything to go
by he will find himself playing in every game and scoring in
f

most! Corporal Jim Lane is also representing the Branch in
the team, in fact he's had his annual haircut in honour of his
selection (to the team or perhaps for sub promotion to
Corporal). We said farewell to WOl Pete Green, he's off to
Didcot for his sins.
News from the Staff branches this month. Congratulations
go to WOl Josh Homewood on his selection for a com-
mission,
We say farewell and congratulations to Corporal
Steve Slater who is leaving G2 Div for PI Services BAOR. in
the rank of Sergeant, his replacement is Corporal Steve Bird
who is transferring from Headquarters Co-ord and he is replaced
by Corporal Ronaldson who has just completed a tour in
Belize. We also welcome Sergeant Rutledge into Gl Div.
It is that time of year again and congratulations on pro-
visional selection for promotion go to Corporal Gerry Adkins—
G l / 4 Plans, Corporal Paddy Keating—G2 Div, Lance Corporal
Ron Frayne—Gl Div, Corporals Jim Lane and Andy Wilson—-
Supply.

Live Oak
WHETHER this is the first mention of Live
Oak in THE GAZETTE or not no one here can
remember so it was felt that it was time we had
We have nine RAOC members serving
among the three services in a four nation Head-
quarters.
All are Staff Clerks, for their sins, and to
give a quick resume of personnel we have W02
Rod Bush as PA to the COS soon to leave us on commissioning.
W02 Roger Evans is Chief Clerk UK Delegation recently arrived
from the sharp end at Headquarters 2nd Armoured Division.
In the Staff Secretariat there is Staff Sergeant John Starrs ably
assisted by Corporals Alex Francis and Ralph Butler, Lance
Corporals Bob Pullan and Nigel King. Corporal Ken Robson
works in the Air Planning Section and UK Delegation, and
finally Lance Corporal Colin Scott is the clerk/typist in the
Operations Centre.
W02 Pete Gill has recently left on posting and we all wish
him well.
Having given all a mention we now move to the main events,
the Live Oak Bowling League is in the limelight at the moment
taking place every Wednesday. Our Annual CPX will soon
be upon us when Live Oak bursts into a hive of activity and we
meet people we never knew existed As he is going to type
these notes we have to mention our UK Delegation blue job
Corporal Ian Drew it t RAF.
Management- Services Unit BAOR
THIS month we start with the long delayed congratulations to
Staff Sergeant Majors Dave Down and Julian Thompson on their
being promoted substantive WOl, eighteen months after selection.
Is this a record?
Life goes on much as normal, the members of the unit
disappear from time to time on studies, courses etc, SSM Julian
Thompson and SQMS Tikki Tikaram have been to all those
exotic places where Supply Depots are located, with the added
spice of calling into Warendorf. SSM Dave Down and our
new convert W 2 Nagy RA went off to Wulfen to do some-
thing or other, and having read their report, I am still not sure.
SSMs Terry Goiding and John Dawson went off to Antwerp but
found it closed to normal folk pending the arrival of more high-
powered visitors. Major David Rowley swanned off to Shriven-
ham to be micro-processed.
Exercise Red Claymore took SSM Clive Kingston to
Pombsen Depot, it took him an hour to discover it is not in
