Transcription a Knockout 1 competition and childrens races, or just to sit,
drink, eat and relax.
There were pony rides for the children as well as a fire
engine, noddy train and ferret scout car.
A high spot of the days entertainment was a display by an
RAF Air Sea rescue helicopter which both thrilled and amused
the spectators.
After putting the children to bed that evening there was a
disco in the Peninsula Club which was also well attended by
RAOC personnel from all over the island,
The popularity of this event has, no doubt, ensured that it
will become an annual occurrence.
The RAOC Akrotiri Revue provided an entertaining even-
ing during which all departments produced a short sketch or in-
dividuals sang songs or told jokes. CRAOC, Lieutenant Colonel
Mike Mathams and his wife Jean were guests for the evening
and they, along with everyone else, thoroughly enjoyed them-
selves. WOl Jim Wilson was the organiser and it therefore
came as a complete surprise to him when it also became an
opportunity for CRAOC to present him with a farewell gift
from all ranks along with a plaque recording all his previous
Units. Conductor Wilson has now returned to UK for his last
six months in the service and his organising ability and Unit
spirit will be sadly missed.
The RAOC Akrotiri versus RAOC Episkopi Games Night
was another new venture that will hopefully become a regular
event, if only to give Akrotiri a chance to win.
This evening turned out to be another farewell, this time
for WOl Ray Preston who has now left for UK and civilian life.
Major John Edwards, OC RAOC Akrotiri, presented WOl
Preston arid his wife, Glen da, with gifts from all ranks and a
memento of his Army service,
Christodoulas Sponsored Walk: July's notes mentioned the
ten mile walk in aid of Cancer Research. Having raised over
£400 last year, the Unit achieved an even better result this year
for this extremely worthwhile charity. The enthusiasm for this
event was infectious and Lieutenant Colonel Mike Mathams
was pleased to present our cheque for £600 to the Colonel AQ
Headquarters LFC. It was the highest amount raised by any
service Unit in Cyprus.

Headquarters Gurkha Field Force
IT has been some time since last the Gurkha Field Force
received a mention in THE: GAZETTE so firstly a short intra*
duction and then more in the months to come. To start, a
rundown on the personalities at present We have Captain

getting used to the heat and humidity, YV02 Pete Simmons our

During the last few months we've got used to the idea of
changing from winter dress to summer dress although for some
of us who have just arrived we can't see the need to wear
anything at all. The first BFT has come and gone, with all
managing a pass, although some passed a little easier than
others. The Headquarters took part in a local Chinese festival,
The Dragon Boat race in June and the team was well filled
with RAOC personnel. Although we didn't win we gave a very
creditable performance which enabled the Commander to con-
tinue to keep his head held high. Afterwards, we were presented
with some very welcome beer and a roasted pig. The beer went
down well but the pig hardly looked dead, so many of us
decided to give it a miss.
Congratulations must go to Corporal and Mrs Mills on the
birth of their son Stuart.
Departures: Staff Sergeant Andy Halliwell to Berlin,
