CORPS CRICKET 1978—
FINAL REPORT
BAD WEATHER caused the cancellation of matches versus
A*CC (twice) and Hampshire Colts and brought a premature
close to a season that ended disappointingly after a promising
start. Beset by team problems, the Corps XI used twenty-
seven players, with Corporal Roy Wilkinson the only ' ever
present,' in its twelve completed matches. Of these, four were
won, three lost and five drawn.
Features of the season were, firstly, the all round perform-
ances of W02 Carl Forde who led the run scoring with three
hundred and seventy eight runs, including two fine eighties and
howled his off breaks economically and accurately and secondly,
\he late season form of WOl John Wood.
The bowling duties fell mainly on the shoulders of Major
Steve Goldring and Sergeant John Holmes, who having * sorted
out' his run up, improved as the- season wore on,
Mention must be made of WOl Roy News on who began
the season as scorer but finally played in ten matches. His some-
what unorthodox batting on a number of occasions led the
' tail wagging.' We wish him luck in his retirement.

Holmes, Captain P. R, Hanlon, Corporal C Johnson, W O l (SSM)

Major S, Goldring, Lieutenant Colonel C. 6. Hopkinson and

RAOC v RMA at Sandhurst
RAOC lost by 9 wickets
THE heaviest defeat of the season. The Corps, batting first,
failed to come to terms with the RMA bowling and lost wickets
steadily, only Jones (37) and Goldring (24) looking comfortable.
A hostile opening spell by John Holmes and Goldring
indicated that the Academy batsmen might have difficulty in
reaching the required total but, having survived the first hour,
ihey punished the Corps bowlers to run out early winners.
RAOC 129 (Jones 37, Goldring 24, Hopkinson 24). RMA 130
for 1 wicket.

CRICKET
THE RAOC (BAOR) XT, once again under the leadership of
Major Wes Thomas, was a much improved side this year. The
season included for the first time fixtures with Royal Brussels
CC, and ended with an extremely ' social' weekend in Berlin.
The semi-final of the inter-Corps championship was reached
and in Brussels, twenty two year old Private Paul Law achieved
a rare milestone in Corps cricket by scoring an undefeated
century, for which he was awarded his cap.

LATE RESULTS
RAOC v RAMC at Mytchctt
RAOC won by 122 runs
A RETURN to form after two defeats. A sound start by John
Wood and Lieutenant Colonel Don O'Hare opened the way for
the highest partnership of the season, 117 by Carl Forde and
Cecil Johnson which ended when Johnson was unluckily run
out for 48.
When the Medics batted, in poor light and on a lively
wicket, John Holmes and Steve Goldring were virtually un-
playable. They were soon replaced by the slower bowling of
For:le and Johnson who ran through the RAMC lower order
barmen. RAOC 207 for 7 declared (Forde 81, Johnson 48,
Wood 41). RAMC 85 (Forde 3 for 16).
