WALK SOFTLY, WALK SAFELY
(Continued from page 249.)
The return journey to the South Rim was over two days, and
allowed time for further exploration of the Phantom Ranch
area, where visitors sensible enough to go by mule enjoy air-
conditioned luxury.
We were clearly getting used to the
conditions by this time and the climb out u p the Bright Angel
trail was much faster than our first attempt two weeks previous.
For the most part our walks u p to this stage had been along
trails down to the river and back, so for our last, and longest
walk we decided to travel as far as was allowed parallel to the
river. This last walk was to be for a week, descending by the
Hermit trail and walking part of the Tonto trail, returning once
more up the Bright Angel. The weather promised, and turned
out, to be the hottest since we had arrived, and more than one
of the Rangers thought we must be 'real crazy.' The recent

rainstorms had destroyed still more of the trails, but this time
our major problem was rinding shade in the middle of the day.
On reaching Boucher Creek on the second day we were lucky
in this respect to find the abandoned asbestos mine, for there
was precious little shade to be had elsewhere.
Despite the hostility of the country there was still much
evidence of wildlife: a mountain deer was as surprised to see us
as we were to see him. Here, as at Monument Creek, our next
camp, the river rapids provided a spectacle of sheer force that
was both exciting and alarming.
The penultimate stage of
the walk was the thirteen mile stretch of the Tonto trail from
Monument to Indian Gardens, but for the first time that week
the weather was kind to us and the trip was uneventful. The
next day we completed our final ascent in (for us) record time.
Then began the long return journey to Washington.
The three members of the exercise would like to thank all
those who made this memorable visit possible, and would
recommend such a venture to anyone who does not mind work-
ing for a good suntan.
