SHORTLY after the end of the First World War, on 27th * November 1918, the Army Ordnance Department and the Army Ordnance Corps were amalgamated and granted the title * Royal.' Extracts from, the very interesting orders and letters of the day are reproduced on page 162 as they appeared in THE GAZETTE of that time. The date is significant in that it was as a direct result of the sterling work of the Corps during the Great War that the honour was bestowed and it is perhaps fitting that each anniversary should occur at this time of remembrance; making it a time of remembrance not only of those who laid down their lives in war, but also of those who have gone before us 4n our long and proud history . . . the Directors, the Commanders, the Conductors down to the Private soldier, each of whom in his own way put down the firm foundations upon which we still build. Strangely, one of the most familiar figures in our history, if perhaps not the best known, is not a General but a Private soldier, he still stands today on the edge of the square at Blackdown. Known over the years as the 'man on top of the monument' the much bemedalled Private James (Mick) Barry was the in- spiration of the sculptor whose fine bronze rests on the plinth of the South African War Memorial, first erected in 1905 at Corps Headquarters, then at Woolwich. Private Barry joined the Corps in 1895 and served through the Boer War and the First World War so he is perhaps a fitting subject for our cover, linking the past and the spirit of remembrance, at this very special time which is enhanced this year by the diamond jubilee of our ' Royal * Army Ordnance Corps, EDITORIAL OFFICE: RAOC SECRETARIAT, DEEPCUT, CAMBERLEY, SURREY.
