THE BISMARK RELAY
THE Bismark Cross Country Relay at Herford is an annual
event which officially opens the Cross Country Season in
BAOR.
Altogether twenty four Units throughout BAOR
(eighteen Major and six Minor) took part in what is ack-
nowledged to be a race of a very high standard,
The course itself was five kilometres long which included
a very steep climb to the Bismark Monument and then a sharp
downhill run to the finish. The race was very closely con-
tested by two teams, SSD Dulmen and last year's winners, 1
Armoured Division Headquarters and Signal Regiment, who
in fact are present 1977/78 BAOR Major Units Cross Country
Champions. In an exciting finish Dulmen won by the narrow
margin of five seconds. The winning team was: Captain Andy
Jelly, Staff Sergeant Dave Towers-Clark, Sergeant Bill Wreyford,
Corporal John Hladkij, Lance Corporals Andy Fox and Steve
Lonnen.
This was a fine achievement to start the cross country
season and it is hoped that this is an omen of further success
to come.
LAWN TENNIS »T8—
THE CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
DESPITE a season severely influenced by bad weather, RAOC
had a successful tennis year. In the Inter-Corps League we
finished second equal with the Gunners. Most of the matches were
hard fought contests, but generally, because we had a well
balanced team with strength in all three pairs, we were ultimately
successful We lost only twice; once against RAPC the eventual
league winners and once against Royal Signals. Much credit
must go to Major John Woodliffe and Sergeant Smith, the first
pair, and to Captain Don Young and W 2 Noutch. Private
Storey who in 1977 showed much promise while still an
Apprentice, showed himself well able to hold a place in the
team; he should be a considerable asset to the Corps* side for
many years to come,
The 1978 Corps Championships were held during the first
week in July. There was a reasonable sized entry with parti-
cularly strong representation from CAD Kineion. Two com-
petitors, Sergeant Muggleton and Corporal Charlton, came
across from BAOR to participate with some success.
The results of the Championships were:—Men's Open
Singles, Corporal Charlton; Men's Open Doubles, Corporal
Charlton and Sergeant Muggleton; Men's Plate, Sergeant
Muggleton; Men's Handicap Singles: Mark Woodliffe; Men's
Handicap Doubles, Major Woodliffe and Mark Woodliffe;
Ladies Open Singles, Mrs O'Brien; Ladies Handicap Singles,
Miss Robson; Ladies Doubles, Mrs Dennison and Mrs Bruce.

THE BASE DEPOTS INTER
OFFICERS MESS TOURNAMENT
WITH the demise of Base Organisation the tournament title
was changed to the Base Depots Inter Officers Mess Tournament,
Four teams took part in this years tournament. They were:
Bicester; Chilwell/Donnington, combined team; CADs/DLSA,
combined team; CVDs/RAOC LE(A) Andover, combined team.
Earlier in the summer the Bicester team won an exciting golf
match by one point from the Chilwell/Donnington team who
in turn finished only one point ahead of the combined CADs/
DLSA team. CADs/DLSA won the cricket match beating
Bicester in the final.
Following the golf and cricket results the tournament had
reached a tense climax when the tennis competition was played
at Chilwell. Three teams came to Chilwell still in with a
realistic chance of winning overall.
Tn the tennis, CVD/RAOC LE(A) came good at last finishing
eleven games ahead of the CADs/DLSA team with the Chilwell/
Donnington team finishing third. So the overall tournament
result was: 1st CADs/DLSA, ten points; 2nd Bicester, nine
points; 3rd CVDs/RAOC LE(A) Andover, eight points; 4th
Chilwell/Donnington, seven points (wooden spoon).
In all this was a well balanced tournament with each team
winning something—if you count the wooden spoon won by the
Chilwell/Donnington team! The three competitions were well
run with players and spectators alike enjoying themselves. It
was very nice to see Brigadier George Ayton and Colonel
Larry Dowdall at Chilwell for the tennis competition. Brigadier
George Ayton donated the original Base Organisation Cup (now
called the Base Depots Cup) and Larry Dowdall spent many
years as the Secretary of the Base Organisation competition.
Mrs Pauline Dalton presented the Base Depots Cup to the
CADs/DLSA Captain and Brigadier George Ayton the Wooden
Spoon to Chilwell/Donnington.
