IN glorious sunshine some twenty six members took part in
the autumn meeting held at the High Post Club and everyone
enjoyed the excellent facilities which included a challenging
course in near perfect conditions.
As in previous years, accommodation was provided by the
Defence NBC School who received nothing but praise for
their hospitality. Indeed some of the scores reflect the very
' social * nature of the meeting. The number of members able
to take part was a little disappointing and it is hoped to im-
prove on this next year; it was particularly so with the ladies
of whom only two took: part in the mixed foursome. Fortunately
Mrs Callan, who kindly presented the prizes, made up their
numbers.
Waiting at the 1st during the Autumn Meeting.
Despite the absence of many of our low handicap players,
the standard of play was generally good and tales of the 'one
that got away' were unlimited.
The day before the autumn meeting the semi-finals and
finals of the Travers Clarke Inter Unit Knock Out competition
took place, also at High Post. The final was played between
CAD Longtown (Lieutenant Colonel Upton and Captain Turn-
bull) and the School of Ordnance (Colonel Logan and Captain
Clayton) resulting in a win for the School four and three.
Autumn meeting results were: Deepcut Trophy—Scratch,
Major Ron Rush; Jeans Cup—Stableford, Major George Foley;
Bogey Cup—Bogey, Lieutenant Colonel Mike Watts; Richards
Cup—Medal (H/Cap), Major Brian Allen; Autumn Rose Bowl
—54 Hole (H/Cap), Captain John Clayton; Bush Cups—Mixed
Foursomes, Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs Montgomery; Mashte/
Niblick—Open Foursomes, Brigadier Lawrence and Major Rush.
Winners of the Travers Clarke Inter Unit Knock Out Com-
petition representing the School of Ordnance Colonel Logan and
Captain Clayton.

JN 1967 many reservists found they were unable to complete
the increased training commitment enforced by the reorganisa-
tion of the Territorial Army into the TAVR. Such reservists,
not wishing to leave the TA/TAVR, sought a compromise and
found it with the Sponsored Units. Sergeant Derek Witts was
one such reservist.
On transfer to RAOC Sponsored Units in 1967 he requested
permission to enter, as an individual, certain Competition Rifle
Meetings, The following year he was joined in these com-
petitions by Sergeant Jack MeynelL With this nucleus of two
volunteers it was decided in 1969 that there should be a
CVHQ RAOC Shooting Team. Further members were forth-
coming, mainly from transferred volunteers, and Captain Allen
Wise was appointed Team Captain.
Five of the original team members are still with the team;
W02 Jack 'The Vicar' Meynell, Sergeants Trev Haynes and
' G i g ' Kakouli, Staff Sergeant Eddie Ford and, the now team
captain, Captain Paul Gilbert (who was, at the formation of the
team a transferred Corporal!).
The team must rank as one of the most successful Unit
shooting teams in the country—certainly within the TAVR.
The competitions normally entered annually are TARA/NRA
Central Meeting at Bisley, RAOC Skill-at-Arms meeting and
London/Middlesex Service Rifle Meeting. The South East
District Skill-at-Arms Meeting was entered on several occasions
but because of the difficulty of ' Unit Classification ' and not
being entitled to ' win' any prizes the team opted out of the
competition*
From all these meetings since 1967 the list of trophies is
indeed impressive. In 1967 Sergeant Derek Witts won the
Queen's Medal and this was bettered by Sergeant Trev Haynes
who won the medal in 1972, 1973 and 1975. In 1977 Private
Phil Weatherby became the first TAVR volunteer to win the
RAOC Service Rifle Championship. Other trophies are; —

1976, 1977 and 1978.
The above list of trophies refers to winners only and does
not include runners up or also rans.
The teams successes are due in main to the extra training
time given by each member for practice. This has led to an
esprit-de-corps which would be welcomed by many Regular
Units.
