Transcription Central Ammunition Depot Kineton
THIS month we have played host to some
very distinguished visitors—in particular
at a reception given by the Commandant.
Our guests, including the DGOS, the Com-
mander West Midland District and many
local dignitaries, spent an enjoyable even-
ing which gave us the opportunity to re-
pay the generous hospitality of the local
populous,
Then Major General Stanyer the Repre-
sentative Colonel Commandant, came
10 inspect the Depot. He was greeted at the main gate by the
Commandant and, after inspecting the Barrack Guard, spent the
day meeting and talking to as many people as possible within
the Depot. He also toured the rebuild site and the Army
School of Ammunition. At the WOs and Sergeants Mess the
General presented eight Senior NCOs with Long Service and
Good Conduct Medals; he seemed very impressed by the hard
work and the cheerful attitude of the soldiers.

carriage is a vintage fire engine—hence the helmet.

Major General Travers, Chief of Staff of the Logistic
Executive, also visited the Depot. He showed a particular
interest in the rebuild and was impressed at the rapid progress
and high standards of construction involved. He also enjoyed
the usual tour of the WOs and Sergeants Mess followed by
1L sh in the Officers Mess.
Before we move into the sporting achievements of the CAD
this month we have sad news. On 22nd September Kineton
said their final farewell to our Commandant, Colonel Berresford.
He left to the sound of a four gun salute, provided by modified
wheelbarrows, and was towed out of the Depot atop a vintage
fire engine and cheered by all ranks and civilian personnel from
Kineton- Colonel Berresford goes with our best wishes to his
new appointment as Colonel LSA 1 DLSA. Colonel D, C
Stone
has now taken the reins as our new Commandant. We
;
w sh him every success in his new Command.
On the sporting front a lesser known sport has hit the
headlines; the CAD Small Bore team of W01 Pugh, Staff
Sergeant Howe and Miss Stalker, despite pressure from local
civilian teams, have won the Banbury Cavalcade of sport shoot
1978.
The rugby and soccer seasons have now begun with train-
ing more nights than not. The Rugby XV won fifteen to four
against CEP Long Marston, and the soccer team look like being
a hard team to beat this year.
Alas tennis has a sad end to the season when the Kineton
tei.m of Lieutenant Colonels Hendy, Roach and Bhabutta,
N-.'ijor Bennett, Sergeant Smith and Colonel Berresford, ably
assisted by their willing but non playing reserve QSMI Jones,
ventured forth to the Officers Club Aldershot where they met
the RAPC Worthy Down in the semi-final of the Army Cup.
Unfortunately CAD came away the losers.
Finally on to canoeing where our gladiators continue to
make the news with W02 Dave Young representing the Army
at the recently held Inter-Services Slalom Championships in the
team event. Meanwhile WOl Mike Haslam has been responsible
for organising and running the Inter-Services racing champion-
ships held at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham.
The Army won this event comfortably from the Royal Navy
and RAF but Mr Haslam assures us that it was due purely to
the efforts of the competitors and had nothing to do with any
favouritism on the part of the organiser! Both these Warrant
Officers are off to Belize shortly to assess canoeing instructors
for the Worcesters and Sherwood Foresters Regiment but, before
they go, they intend to get the Unit team back into training for
the Army Wild Water Championships.
The Army School of Ammunition
THE holiday cobwebs were vigorously shaken away early in
September when staff and students returned from all corners
of the country after a well deserved break. An early visitor in
the month was Major General Stanyer who toured the School
meeting both staff and course students. In mid month we
welcomed a wide spectrum of cap badges with the arrival of
4 Ammunition Incidents Course so by this time all thoughts
of leave had vanished under a hive of activity.
On the 14th September COSLOG, Major General Travers
visited us. A cleverly positioned cap badge by Staff Sergeant
J. Mason RCT, did not pass unnoticed by COSLOG when he
paused at the rear of a class under instruction, as of course
was fully intended!
Beyond the classroom an active life continues to be the
norm. BFT continues to baffle some and to surprise many
of the students. Staff Sergeant Colin Kilduff has taken such
training to extremes and appears to have his eye on the Moscow
Olympics. He can be seen during any evening on most of the
South Warwickshire lanes dressed, among other things, in
woolly hat, polythene bag shirt and drawers ' Dracula.' Prowess
at sport has its knocks and bruises however, and no better
example is Staff Sergeant Paul Mitchell who has taken to using
a walking stick after a Sergeants Mess Sunday soccer fixture.
This month has been a fairly mobile time for the staff even
without sport and fitness training. Captain Douglas Hewitt
visited the USA for a few days of IED Training. His office
compatriot Captain Douglas Doherty sped south to BAOR
accompanied by WOl Pugh our GW Branch SAT. Rumour has
it that the Douglas's are in training for more travels to come
and all will be in the line of duty (Frees?). Farewells and
congratulations have been said to Captain Mick Coldrick who
leaves GW Branch for Northern Ireland on promotion. In his
place has appeared Captain Lew Bean who has been in station
