Transcription going to Kits Store, The occasion was marked by a most
pleasant informal gathering held in the VCC Office at lunch
time during which Dot was presented with a bouquet and Mrs
Rase Palin charmingly led a chorus line of ladies of the Head-
quarters through a delightful dance routine. Dot's husband, ex-
Depot employee Mr Bert Jaggs, is so busy in retirement that
he was unfortunately, unable to attend the function.
Congratulations to our DMA, Mr John Banton, on being
recommended for promotion to HEO.
Welcome to Mrs Gillian Monk, Headquarters messenger,
and Miss Rachel Woolley who replaces Mr Gary Hargreaves in
VCC y to whom we bid a fond farewell on his departure to
another Ministerial field.
A simple typing error led to the annual Depot trip to
Blackpool being advertised at £200 per person. The Admin
Officer, Mr Mike Fogg, wanted to know the route and means
of travel offered at this price because, even with his recent win
on the football pools, he wasn't quite prepared to pay this sort
of sum.
Nice to receive a card from recent departee WOl Ted
Anderson, who it seems is still trying to climb mountains in
Scotland and training his family to do likewise.
COSLOG Major General P. A. Travers being shown around the
Army School of Am munition Museum by Major F. R. Steer*
for sometime now but who has suddenly found himself changed
from student to staff. It really is amazing what this Kineton
air does for one! W02 John Lawrence has also been con-
gratulated on his promotion to WOl and upon the skilful
manner in which he has despatched his in-tray into the lap of
unsuspecting W02 Steve Dolman who Joins us on promotion
from CAD Kineton. Lance Corporal John Halliwell has left
the Corps for civilian life and in his place we have welcomed
Lance Corporal John Rowe from 1 Combat Supplies Battalion.
Finally, our warmest congratulations to Sergeant Pete
Philpott of EOD Branch who we learn has gained a Mention
in Despatches whilst serving with 321 EOD Unit.
Central Vehicle Depot UK
WE were pleased to welcome Major General and Mrs Callan;
in addition to touring the Vehicle Depot, the DGOS found
time to meet a large number of military and civilian staff, while
Mrs Callan was introduced to the wives. There followed a
short reception in the Sergeants Mess and lunch in the Officers
Mess. Altogether a very full and successful day,
On the tennis courts Major John and Mrs Terry Woodliffe
have won the South West District Mixed Doubles, Majors Rose
and Woodliffe the Mens Doubles and, for good measure, John
Woodliffe the Mens Singles.
On the cricket field, inspired by sundry unrepeatable threats
from the Commandant, the Officers managed to lose to the
Sergeants by only thirteen runs. A considerable improvement on
previous performances.
We say farewell to Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs Bidgood.
Both Colonel John and Maggie have been active and popular
members of Ashchurch Station. We wish them good fortune
in BAOR and welcome in turn, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Collier
as our new CREME.
VEHICLE DEPOT ASHCHURCH
DURING his recent visit the DGOS, Major General Callan,
presented Long Service and Good Conduct Medals to W02
Roberts, Sergeants Crilley and Hoy.
A very successful Station fete was held raising over £300
for local charities. Followed by a Station dance of which a
Yery enjoyable time was had by all.
Congratulations to W02 Martin, Sergeant Crilley, Corporal
Gaughen and Lance Corporal Lowe on their promotions and to
Private Ray and Anne Counsell on their marriage.
. We welcome to the Depot WOl Utting, Sergeants Kempster
and Fleming, Lance Corporal Hemming, Privates Coyle and
Fishwick.
VEHICLE DEPOT HILTON
THIS month saw the departure from the Headquarters of Mrs
Dorothy Jaggs who has performed the duties of messenger so
well for more years than most of us can remember. Dot is

VEHICLE DEPOT LUDGERSHALL
WE are now gearing up for the series of! Autumn Exercises, A
lucky few are off with their Eager Beavers to BAOR for
Exercise Bold Guard. The Depot scribes are sharpening their
biros ready for Exercise Scrum Half and the Volvo teams are
busily preparing for the annual AMFL Exercise.
Happily however it's not all work and no play. The soccer
team are working up to the approaching season. Inter-depart-
mental matches are standing all square at the moment and we
thrashed our local opposition in the Medical Depot Ludgershall
in the first 'friendly.* The darts team also had a good win
against the local village inn.
Three new arrivals this month: Corporals Chris Allan from
Antwerp and Dave Hummerston from Cyprus and Private Webb
from Canada. Temporary departure to Northern Ireland is
Lance Corporal Alan McMurdo, shortly to be followed by
Private Jasper Scarrott who has finally passed the qualifying
course.
Two of the longest serving Depot civilian employees leave
this month on retirement: Mr Bob Spanswick BEM the gun-
pull-back expert and Mr Joe Brady from Depot Issues, Both
these employees joined the Depot in 1947 after Active War
Service. They will be sorely missed for their acknowledged
expertise and their friendly and helpful personalities. They are
both local Ludgershall inhabitants so will not be totally lost
to their friends in the Depot
Central Ammunition Depot Longtown
ON a visit by Brigadier G, N. Powell, Deputy Commander North
West District, he presented the Imperial Service Medal to Mr
D. F. Murray and to Mr J. McGill who between them have
over sixty years service in the Depot. He also presented Long
Service and Good Conduct Medals to Captain Glasby, WOl
Cuthbert and Staff Sergeant Ashurst. We offer congratulations
to them all.
Our shooting personality, Captain Alan Glasby, managed to
win a * few' trophies at Bisley, As these notes are being written
Alan is in South Korea representing Great Britain in the World
Championships. I offered him a few names and addresses from
my own days in Korea, but as he says ** who wants the name
and address of a Korean Granny!*'.
Mention must be made (I have been threatened) of the
sterling work of our ladies who produced a marvellous array
of cakes etc for our stall at the Longtown Coffee Evening in aid
of the Old Peoples' Christmas party fund. The evening raised
a magnificent sum of £500 of which our contribution was £71-
We have also forwarded a donation of £35 to the RNLI, con-
tributed by the Officers and Sergeants Messes, MDP Club and
Commandant's Fund.
On the sporting side our two golf representatives Lieutenant
Colonel Upton and Captain Turnbull reached the final of the
Travers Clarke knock-out competition. However, they were
beaten in the final by circumstances beyond their control (the
opponents played better).
Our CAO, Lieutenant Colonel Upton, has left us for a
short stay at Bramley then on to Andover, we wish him well for
the future and hope he will pay us a visit; perhaps we can
arrange one of our * little walks * for him. We welcome Lieu-
tenant Colonel Dyer in his place from 3 BAPD and whilst we
cannot offer such perks as LOA and duty free booze we can
