Headquarters BAOR
COMBAT kit has again been getting an airing
as preparations for Exercise Jogtrot got under
way. In October the majority of our staff were
at their exercise locations and the corridors
quiet—except for the jog trotting of our remain-
ing staff rushing around to answer a number
of telephones simultaneously.
Major Mike Dunne was lunched out in
September. He retired from the Active List a
day later but is as active as ever, still in S Man
Branch, but wearing the natty dark suiting of a retired officer.
W02 Bruce Legg of Ordnance Directorate is organizing a
RAOC BAOR tenpin bowling championship which is shortly
to be held in Dusseldorf. The sophisticated wall charts in his
office showing lane allocations and scores now obliterate our
materiel statistics.
In the 'Rheindahlen Garrison cross country race, nearly
two hundred runners took part RAOC was well represented
and performed well. Corporal Keith Eaton was the first RAOC
runner finishing in fourth place in a time of twenty seven minutes
thirty five seconds for the five mile course, helping his team
from G Int and Sec to fourth place which put the S Man team
(all RAOC) into fifth place out of the twenty four teams com-
peting. Sergeant Pete Marsh, Corporal Dick Whittington and
W02 Taffy Keene also deserve special mention for their
individual performances.

Planning and Worksrudy Unit BAOR
NEWS of comings and goings seems appropriate this month,
with the farewells first.
*Auf Wiedersehen' to Conductor Steve Mayes, Margaret
and family, to SSM Dave Stott and Angela and to SQMS Geoff
Seaby, Veronica and family, all to Donning^on.
Welcome to RSM Tom Paisley, Lynn and family and RSM
Pete Bath, With two RSMs to hold his muster parades, our
only junior rank, Lance Corporal Steve Boyle, must be unique.
Finally congratulations to Conductor Dave Ashworth on
being selected for SRC in 1979.
BAOR Ammunition Inspectorate
TO start with a note of success, we are pleased to announce
that Corporal 'Mac * Macdonald has passed his EPC (Military
calculations) examination.
Our new postings-in for the month are Corporal Paul
Markwick to Herford and Corporal John Horner to Walsrode.
The arrival of Corporal Markwick means that the Unit can add
ski-ing to its list of representative sports as he is an accom-
plished skier. As Staff Sergeant Bob Cock burn, our AT Rhine
Area, has also graced the slopes of Aviemore maybe we have
the beginning of a 521 EOD (Alpine) Unit.
Whilst on EOD we are all delighted to welcome Captain
Schofield back from his tour in Northern Ireland,
The Inspectorate is now fully equipped with EOD equip-
ment and we are now ready for the next IRA sojourn into
BAOR. One is led to believe that, deep within the Walsrode
Fawlty Towers, a grass cutting modification is being investigated.
This month the Unit has its own Annual Ammunitions and
Storage Inspection. Although the Unit managed to eventually
negotiate a satisfactory report things looked a bit tricky at
one point when the Inspecting AT, WOl John Rolison, was
giving the OC a ' hard time' (Quote). However, at the eleventh
hour the SATO intervened with the required dispensations.
(Think about it).
Our problem of the month has been Exercise Red Dragon,
during a part of which 3 Division intends to bomb-up a battle
group, drive somewhere, and bomb-down (if that is the appro-
priate antonym) and return the ammunition to RAOC. The
ATO responsible for subduing the dragon and its problems is
Captain ' St George' Jacques who of late always seems to be
dashing off to RAOC 3 Division, Is that where the fair maiden(s)
live?
Whilst producing smoke for a fire exercise at 4 Petroleum
Depot by igniting twenty one Generators Smoke No, 24 Mk 2,
Staff Sergeant Bob Cock bum discovered it is not wise to have
a sequence of ignition that is also down wind even if it is in the
interests of exercise reality!
3 Base Ammunition and Petroleum Depot
IT is with deep regret that we have to report the death of
Private David Ritchie who was killed in an accident on the 24th
of August whilst at work in the Depot. The Commandant and
all members of 3 BAPD, send their condolences to Mrs Brenda
Ritchie and the children. The Commandant would also like to
thank everyone who has placed donations and helped at this
troubled time.
To confirm the undoubted pleasures of returning to work
after the summer leave the PT season has started. Early morn-
ing runs are the order of the day in preparation for the BFT
Tests.
The Spartans of the rugby world have started experiencing
the scenic beauty of the quarries. At least ten new words
have been invented to describe the personality and heritage of
the skipper 'Digger' Denholm,
Fit and keen the Bracht Barbarians went to RAF Wil-
den rath to play in the DD Knock Out Cup. A full complement
of fifteen men playing for ten minutes each day. Against stiff
opposition Bracht went through to win the competition. Amidst
yawns of boredom from opposition Bracht collected the Knock
Out—and last seasons League Cup, from Mr Alan Forster the
Allied Brewers representative.
At 0600 on the Sunday morning a bleary eyed squad set off
for the wilds of SHAPE for an invitation seven a side. Despite
